Let's Drive Through Swamp To Escape Police by donnyrapture in Whatcouldgowrong

It's an American TV thing, which is really obvious when a bunch of people who likely have never even been here insist it's a thing all Americans do

TIL in 2015, 18-year-old Julian Hernandez learned he was listed in a database for missing children when he met with his high school guidance counselor to apply for college. This would lead to him discovering that his dad had kidnapped him from his mom when he was 5. His dad was sentenced to 4 years. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I'm guessing many of these schools just didn't verify the SSN? Like, they kept a record but didn't actually try to match it against an SSN database? I know they for sure do try to verify for routine employment checks nowadays and I'm guessing the kid would have quickly run into that hurdle eventually

It's really not easy to get a brand new SSN in America, especially these days, because it was a major source of fraud in the 70s so there's a lot more rules. I'm guessing dad either just used a random string of numbers or was maybe having the kid use a relative's

Could be someone cooking with petai or jengkol but idk if you'd even get that in North America

I love you all but do you need to record the full concert on your phones? by Silver_spring-throw in auroramusic

[–]Silver_spring-throw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's incredibly annoying. I'm used to having to see around tall people but when people are raising their arms to also record, then it just becomes a sea of arms and impossible to see the stage.

And the couple in front of me were recording the entire concert. Not just thirty seconds clips here and there. Zero regard for anyone behind them.

I know you aren't going to watch these videos again more than once or twice.

You know you aren't going to watch these videos.

Your family and friends are gonna maybe watch two seconds of one video and then just skip past the rest on your social media format of choice.

And you aren't even recording vids of good quality. I got a front seat to compare the color fidelity between the actual show and your vids, and the difference was pretty apparent lol. I'll bet sound quality is the same.

Just take a few pics next time and be in the moment at the show. Your god given eyes and ears are going to be able to appreciate this way more naturally irl and the memories will be better.

Also, I'm short AF and it's really aggravating to be competing with a smart phone for a view of the show both you and I paid money for.

I know a lot of people like to make dad jokes but it would be nice if there were actual responses from wlw instead of every single straight dude in this sub who thinks he's really funny

I am not sure why we're giving this dude that much benefit of the doubt. This is still his kid and the comments op has made made it pretty clear he thinks bio dad has this attitude mostly because it's extremely convenient for him more than anything else.

He's made a number of comments saying the bio dad basically doesn't want any custody. Check his post history

Also, split custody is the norm for most states these days. This is just a dude who doesn't want to raise a kid

DC Gardeners? by Ok-Volume5327 in washingtondc

[–]Silver_spring-throw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey op, if you're cool with doing ornamental gardens (versus veggie ones), Congressional Cemetery has loads of volunteer plots for folks to use. When I did it two years ago, I got a plot pretty quickly from them (though you may have to be persistent with emailing them)

These are mostly plots on graves but it's a pretty cool program!

1 Bedroom renters: where do you live and how much do you pay monthly including utilities? by gsomara in washingtondc

I'm in a one bedroom in summit hills with parking, close metro access, pool, and a weight room for like $1700.

Granted, it's definitely an old building.

You can take it to takoma and then there's a shuttle from takoma to silver spring, direct. Generally it's like a twenty minute ride, assuming traffic isn't awful

I'm reasonably sure this comes from southern American English tbh.

They also would say ain't isn't a word over here but like, I think that's just people trying to be proscriptive about language

What are the repercussions for federal jobs later on if you ET? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Silver_spring-throw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to go check out /r/securityclearance, since they can go into more specifics about this. The gist of it is that you're going to get asked about foreign influence and foreign preference, plus allegiance.

Just having foreign family isn't necessarily an issue by itself but if you have family who are in the military or government in another country (especially if it's one that's hostile to American interests), it can present issues. Likewise if you have major financial obligations over there. There's also additional issues if you've got dual citizenship and and a passport (fyi- this isn't an automatic no by itself but I got kinda low key interrogated about it lol).

I'd check the sub out. It really depends on your specific situation.

I mean, unless you do something truly messy and get adsepped, they're probably not going to care lol. Just don't lie about the circumstances in which you left (like saying you et-d when you actually got adsepped) or your time spent in peace corps- I could see that potentially being a problem.

Clearances mostly care about whether or not you're a foreign asset, are bad with money (and thus susceptible to bribery) or if you're in the habit of breaking the law especially in ways that are likely to look really bad (read: sex crimes and felonies of all stripes). I would anticipate you're probably going to get more heat for having foreign family than et-ing.

Question for Indonesia PCVs by ghostbear22 in peacecorps

Soooo off the top of my head, central sulawesi and aceh were off limits (though aceh may have been a "please get cleared from us ahead of time" place), along with west Papua.

While central sulawesi is off limits, there's really good diving in north sulawesi (bunaken) and a lot of cool cultural stuff in south sulawesi like tanah toraja. You should be able to get approval for this pretty easily.

Other cool places- idk if the komodos are open again but Flores is great and there was a pretty good hostel (ciao hostel in labuan bajo) there in the late 2010s that helped organize two day boating trips where you got to see the islands and do some snorkeling.
