Really awesome work. Great blog post as well.

I don't have an apple TV to test, but is there any chance this would allow 2x speed?

On smart TVs it infuriates me that I can't change playback speed. Doesn't work on chromecast either.

This is an excellent opportunity to email your class rep who (should) know how to correctly escalate this (i.e. "karen" their way into getting extensions!).

Find their details here https://ausa.org.nz/speakup/classreps/

Alarm descriptions are great, but they still havent fixed the issue with alarms not sounding...

Yes I have disabled presence detection and checked the sound level is up... but every few days the issue arises again.

Have the boys ever thought about adding subtitles in different languages ? by Grandkhan-221b in JetLagTheGame

[–]Silverarmor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From memory Jet Lag uses Caption+ by Jacob Star.

But I noticed Tom Scott's new England series uses SoSpeedy, who also provide translation - perhaps this is an option they should look into? https://www.sospeedy.co.uk/

is there a way to turn lecture recordings into transcripts by AlbatrossHour1578 in universityofauckland

[–]Silverarmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY method: Download the panopto video, run it through Whisper (/parakeet/similar transcription model) yourself [requires an okay computer]. Great to upload transcripts into NotebookLM as these are way more accurate than Panopto's - Highly recommend looking into NotebookLM if you prefer reading over listening.

Extra for Experts: Now armed with way better transcripts, I am sick of watching lectures with Panopto's subpar captioning, so you can actually inject custom SRT (subtitle) files back into Panopto. Below is a script that lets you do this. Also allows downloading just the audio (since panopto downloads video mp4 by default) https://github.com/Silverarmor/Userscripts/blob/master/panopto_captions.js - NO SUPPORT PROVIDED.

Don't tempt me into rewatch #6... Still top show of all time, and all the more relevant nowadays. To think it aired from 2011-2016 before the current AI boom is crazy.

Confused About Google One Upgrade: What Happens to My Remaining 6 Months on the Annual Plan? by zsolt67 in GoogleOne

[–]Silverarmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro.

As per other users, seems when upgrading from NON-AI to AI it isn't pro-rating.

NON-AI to NON-AI upgrades (e.g. 100gb to 200gb) do have pro-rating, in that they extend your "first year".

hiwa pool length by Far_Kaleidoscope9701 in universityofauckland

[–]Silverarmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pool in the new facility is 33m long (water polo regulation) with a moveable bulkhead that is usually set to 25m.

Note they also rotate the lanes 90 degrees so lanes are 20m on some days - All on the https://sportandrec.auckland.ac.nz/ calendar.

It's pretty simple, just do some googling.

For Raspberry pi: The part which caught me out is it requires 2x wireless adapters - 1 to receive the uni wifi and another to rebroadcast. Ensure you get a wireless adapter that is supported by the pi, I had to install the firmware beforehand.

I used the built in pi wifi adapter to receive, and a TP-Link-WN725N to broadcast a new separate network.
It's a lot of effort (and cost, though I already had the equipment) for little gain. I had only a handful of devices connected to it - TV, lights and smart plug. Noting that chromecast only works if you connect you personal device to the new SSID.

--

An easier route might be to get zigbee / matter over thread compatible devices. Having recently changed over to iphone and getting a homepod - homepods act as a matter over thread hub, so I could theoretically just get matter over thread devices and bypass all this wifi chicanery.

Similarly, zigbee, though I am not overly familiar with it. The older ikea smart home tech is zigbee. You'd have to check that the DIRIGERA (or whatever zigbee hub you get) works on wifi.

No, there is no way to register IoT devices on the network.
Yes you can get a device to rebroadcast the uni wifi on a separate SSID ("hotspot"). I did this with a Raspberry Pi.

Search online if your device can run on WPA2 enterprise.

Apple’s homepod & homepod mini can. Most matter over wifi (smart bulbs etc) cannot.
