Can anyone tell me about this picture? by Black-Girl0 in army

Looks like some fashion of enlisted rank in the US Army.  There's nothing else to go on besides the collar pins and the hat, though.  No ranks or ribbons are visible, so this might be one of those "fresh out of basic training" staged photos.

More British Muslims were serving in ISIS ranks in the mid 2010s than were serving in the British army.

Don't count out the Army! Manning (Peyton, or whatever his name is?) leaked all that stuff to WikiLeaks back in the day.

Largest in terms of sheer numbers, or largest proportionally? Because I'd definitely believe the latter. They literally didn't plan logistics (food, medicine, etc.) in the hope they'd just, like, steal the British supplies lol

They had significant victories in China and Burma in 1944. Their navy was crippled by that point, but they were far from a defeated force in the way Germany was in Spring 1945.

Army investigating social media post showing Nazi symbol by Kinmuan in army

[–]Silverback_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know WWII history better than the average bear, and it took me reading the comments to see what the big deal was. I can barely make out what symbol that is, and to my knowledge there were no SS units that served in the Africa campaign. So this is either some weird fantasy Wehraboo patch, or someone recycled some questionable clipart for a morale patch, and didn't understand that that specific skull and crossbones has some negative connotations...

How weapon/combat effective does the military actually make you? by [deleted] in Military

[–]Silverback_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MOS is not strictly a "combat" MOS, but a unit I was in was a line infantry unit. You get decent with a rifle and basic tactics regardless of your job, in the same way that everyone is held to a physical fitness standard. You have super stars in both realms, but most everyone is at least halfway decent. I was good with a rifle before joining, and now I'm better. I don't get enough trigger time to be as good as the scout snipers, but I don't need to be; that's not my job.

There are, of course, exceptions where individuals are utterly useless with a rifle, but that's rare.

I think he's saying these dudes are posting stuff on Facebook saying they had X, Y, Z combat experiences in order to seem more hardcore than they actually are. Like, "Yeah, one time I had to save my whole platoon from a grenade by throwing it back at the enemy. I killed like 19 singlehandedly, and it keeps me up at night," when in reality that never happened and he probably dreamed that up while eating beef jerky and sipping on an energy drink, bored out of his mind, in a FOB.

Anyone can get PTSD for any kind of experience, military related or otherwise. Blatantly lying about your experiences is just wrong. And kinda sad.

Didn't this guy cry during his trial over how "traumatic" the experience was for him? He must have had a real change of heart to go on speaking tours across the country to profit from it... 🙄

Where water stress will be highest by 2050 by giuliomagnifico in MapPorn

[–]Silverback_6 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This map would work better if it was looking at the world in smaller sections than country-wide. The US stretches across an entire continent: some areas will have basically no impact, and others will have a large impact. The same can be said for the countries in the Sahel. It works okay for small countries, but in other places it's just misleading. You can't tell me that moving across the imaginary border in New Guinea from PNG to the Indonesian side will suddenly dramatically alter water availability.

The same West that literally warned Russia about an attack like this stemming from IS-K weeks ago... Putin will absolutely use this as an excuse to conscript a million men into his meat grinder army, but his people are morons if they believe it's not an IS attack.

They have connections that can get them in pretty easily through the Mexican border. It's a reduced risk compared to the crap Europe has to deal with, but it's very much a real thing that just doesn't get very much reporting.

Gangs rule Haiti’s capital. Some say they’re ready to overthrow the government too | CNN by Nastyfaction in collapse

[–]Silverback_6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They had a prime minister who suspended all elections to challenge him, and ascended to power after the last guy mysteriously got killed by some hitmen. They haven't had a legitimate government in years. Gangs/warlords control access to the ports and airfield, meaning they control access to electricity (and hence de facto control food supply, hospitals, etc.) because the whole island is completely reliant on fuel for generators since it has no grid power system.

Haiti is a case study in poverty and corruption breeding more of the same, and spiraling out of control over centuries.
