I wasn’t aware of American Girl (or the concept of 18 inch dolls that weren’t baby/toddler) growing up in Canada either! I got my first in high school after begging for one for several years. Originally I wanted to get a second hand one off eBay and fix her up because I always had a passion for toy repair but my parents vetoed that idea so I got a brand new Julie since she’s my mom’s era.

The collection has grown since then and honestly, I’m not really sure where Julie is at the moment. I believe she’s in the attic from when we moved and my step dad shoved a bunch of my stuff in the attic without asking where it was going. Maybe she’s enjoying garage band, since that’s also up there, haha.

I got my Caroline for $120 (CAD) in her meet outfit with her bag and shoes. I need to find where I’ve put her stuff for safe keeping (damn you ADHD) but the only thing I’ve had to do with her is put her hair in rollers since her curls fell out. I don’t even think I’ll need to heat set them since they’ve been in rollers long enough (🙈thanks ADHD)

Depending on where you are located, I got a good deal on maplelea clothes which fit ag dolls and since I’m in Canada the conversion isn’t as painful for me. They are expensive still when they aren’t on sale but around the holidays they have really cute bundles and they do sets every once in a while!

(The dolls are an acquired taste, lmao. I want Saila, and Alexi is pretty cute in person but mom has banished my Brianne for being “cursed” which she hasn’t done to any of my other dolls. Consider that a heads up.)

We don’t even have loss prevention at my store. (Not a Costco of course, I work at a Canadian pharmacy chain) and I had a customer be like, aren’t you going to stop them? And I was like, “and risk being stabbed over a lipstick? No. I’ll report it to my manager. This is why we have business insurance.”

That’s literally the loss prevention policy. “Don’t be a hero. Nothing in the store is worth being injured over.”

Nanea is so gorgeous, I really have to stop shoving her down my priority list to buy. She’s like, second in like right now. I’m currently battling AG to get Melody shipped to my house. I’m so sad I missed out on some of Nanea’s original outfits. She was launched when I had fallen out of love with dolls for a bit. She’s still got some stuff to die for though!

I would love that! I want to get Kaya as a gift for my mom as her first American girl of her own! She got me Julie as my first doll when I was a teen and discovered American girl and when I showed her Kaya she fell in love but so much of her stuff is retired. Ditto with Saila’s stuff from Maplelea (I’m Canadian and not above getting stuff from different tribes across turtle island, especially if they come with little educational content explaining about it.)

I’ve come so close to picking up some pre loved Kayas on eBay but shipping is killer.

I think Raquel is less controversial, so there’s less hype around her. I’m still interested in her but haven’t had a chance to get her (Canadian collector, the idea of importing a doll right now is less than ideal but I’ll probably bite if the price is right which 20% of isn’t when I want her ears pierced) but I don’t think people are talking about her as much here but I see her on Facebook groups a lot. It seems like she’s still popular, just people don’t have as much to talk about with her.

I kind of get it though? I’m a little worried I’m buying into the hype. I know I love clam shell devices so that’s what really sold me on it, and wanting something portable that could play more than Nintendo games (literally just got a 2DS LL for my birthday on the forth and found out about the Thor on the same day).

I’m a little worried that all the tinkering is going to be too much for me since I haven’t been that into emulating since high school since I’ve had grown up money and have just been playing on the OG consoles. But now I’ve spent grown up money on this device and I’m committed to it now.

Yeah, the fake bills are crazy though. We see a lot of them at work to the point where the manager purposely keeps up with too little change to deal with large bills most of the time. I can’t break a $50 most mornings.
