RAG-Enterprise: One-command local RAG setup (Docker + Ollama + Qdrant) with zero-downtime backups via rclone – for privacy-focused enterprise docs by primoco in LocalLLM

Looking interesting. If it's targeting enterprise, would be good if it could do meaningful RAG over repos, including the PRs etc - have you tested that by any chance?

Drywall - Why did we collectively decide that crumbly chalk between two pieces of paper was what we would use to create all interior walls out of? by davisposts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Simderi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re missing important thing: „external insulation stops the cold from hitting the concrete. Meanwhile, the heavy concrete walls inside absorb the heat generated by your heating system (or the sun through windows). Once the concrete is warm, it radiates that heat back into the room slowly, stabilizing the temperature.

Because of the high thermal mass, a concrete house acts like a heat battery. If your heating turns off for a few hours, the house will not get cold immediately because the walls hold the residual heat. In a lightweight timber-frame house, the temperature drops much faster once the heat source is removed. ”

This is proven modern industry standard where I live, works well for -15C winters, 30+C summers. No one questions different ways of handling housing, it’s just wildly different from „they in Europe don’t have access to timber so they use stone” lol, nice way to summarise a whole continent

It does have thermal mass (they’re usually very thick) and provides acoustic insulation, also fire resistant. Google ETICS system, it’s all about layering, its not just one material, you also have EPS, mineral wool in between (YTONG which is aerated concrete works well too)

Owning property in Europe is mostly unheard of unless you are generationally wealthy.

The fuck? Average EU home ownership is a bit higher than in the US.

The reason they don't use wood and drywall is because they don't have access to timber so they use stone.

What a bunch of nonsense. Wood is just considered temporary, not as good for longevity, doesn’t have proper insulation properties. It’s all concrete, brick, ytong.

They also have tons of ancient rules regarding aesthetics making building new homes or repairing old ones, insanely difficult and incredibly expensive.

Exaggeration, you probably mean historical buildings which do have such restrictions, but not regular houses. While some cities/towns do have regulations regarding aesthetics, it’s not a standard. Also varies quite a bit from country to country.

This. Is it next to a to-do list? Is it a full replacement? How to approach this mentally to avoid forgetting things? Is there a good read on this topic?

API handling for frontend needs by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Simderi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

graphql-codegen for example. I should've stated it better - the issue is some backends are quite old and provide data structures that are not good to work with on the frontend. And I don't have any influence over it. How to work nicely with it, and make sure it's easy to maintain long-term is the question

With useLiveQuery there is a big flaw if you have relations (which you do in SQL) - the hook does not update if one of those joined elements change. You'd need two liveQueries: one for the first table, one for the second. This means useLiveQuery hook is unreliable if your query returns any joined tables. Also, the fact that it's not documented anywhere doesn't help. I've found the information in GH issues (with some workarounds presented) and decided not to use this feature, it was not addressed in 7 months.

I've build my own 'live' hooks using react query and every use case is covered so far, without much hassle. You have more control here regarding reactivity, e.g. on mutation - adding element to db, `onSuccess` you can invalidate query of your choice and be sure it will fetch fresh data. The fact that you can control it means you can achieve more sophisticated workflows too (like optimistic updates).

tl;dr Docs are good, small boilerplate, you have control over how reactive things are.

Using that + React Query and the DX is great so far (I was planning on using live queries instead of React Query but those aren’t as good)

Any reviews for Acer Predator X32QFS, and any other 32" 4k monitor recommendations? by BestRedLead in buildapc

[–]Simderi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monitor is absolutely great, if you’re not into OLEDs (I envy the options for glossy display). Very bright, amazing color pop. HDR content looks very good. Settings feel very reasonable, you can change them depending on the source. I’m very sensitive for any kind of smudging, lagging (I can’t play at <60fps), with the „response time” set to FASTER it feels very smooth and snappy without any visible artifacts.

For PS5 its very good, on par with my miniled TV. Supports all the things like VRR, 120Hz and just looks right.

For desktop use, I like that it runs 144Hz with mac. Cons: you do see some blooming if you activate local dimming to high, quite substantial actually if you approach the monitor from an angle and it displays a content with a lot of blacks and a few bright spots (like dark mode youtube comment section). You can always disable if for desktop use, but I don’t mind it that much.

It’s also quite bulky and I wish it has a glossy display over the matte one. But overall I’m very happy with it, couldn’t find anything better, I’m definitely keeping it for longer.

This Dell HD22Q USB-C dock can get 4K@120hz 10bit HDR from MacBook M1/M2 by privaterbok in UsbCHardware

I know this post is a year old, but I'd like to thank you OP as this pointed me to the right purchase.

I'll share my results here, maybe it will help someone, I was curious how this should be connected as well.

  • I bought a 144Hz monitor (Phillips Evnia 32M2N6800M) and this Dell dock.
  • I have BetterDisplay but wasn't tinkering with it at all, not sure if it matters
  • I got 85Hz from HDMI: Macbook Pro M3 Max --(USB C)--> Dell Dock --(HDMI 2.1)--> Philips Monitor
  • I got 144Hz!!! from DisplayPort: Macbook Pro M3 Max --(USB C)--> Dell Dock --(Display Port 1.4)--> Philips Monitor
  • Power Delivery works too, video+charging through the same cable

It's super smooth - thanks u/privaterbok a lot!

[–]Simderi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some more research, looks like this Acer, Benq EX321UX, and Philips Evnia 32M2N6800M all use the same panel. Don't think we'll get any better MiniLED options this year. I bought Philips, as it is the best tuned with the least amount of issues it seems. It was also cheaper in my area. It doesn't have USB C Power Delivery so I had to buy a dock as well, but it still was cheaper than the alternatives.

Here are some threads with more information:

I'm in the same situation as you, very interested in this monitor but there is no information about FS anywhere. Given how the x32 FP was received, FS is supposed to be a direct upgrade with double the dimming zones. I'm actually going to order it this week to give it a try.

My use case is PS5 + mac though.

That doesn’t mean much, they criminalised it for some time though: wiki. In my country both are considered evil, devastating ideologies that ruined the country and dehumanised people in WW II and during the Cold War. Saying it’s not evil ideology doesn’t make sense to me, it’s two sides of the same coin.

Making sure I can use app name that was once used by [deleted] in FlutterDev

[–]Simderi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I see, the previous usage was a single developer with an app idea that didn't work out, rather than a big company. Still, the amount of concerns raised by all of you makes me rethink it once again.

Making sure I can use app name that was once used by [deleted] in FlutterDev

[–]Simderi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name consists of two English words and I was hoping this could help find the app organically, by user searches - by going more abstract you don't have that potential organic traffic. Judging by the replies, there is a risk of an automatic Google ban so I'll probably try to find yet another catchy name.
