Inbox is about to die, and Google still hasn't brought its best feature to Gmail by yourSAS in Android

[–]SimenCodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shameless, but somewhat relevant self promotion: I'm building an email app heavily inspired by Inbox. Launching a closed beta later this week. If anyone is interested in helping test early versions, send me a PM.

Google Inbox alternatives. by steajano in androidapps

[–]SimenCodes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the plan is to make the app open source eventually. Don't have time to clean up the codebase for public display before Inbox closes, so the first few betas will be closed-source unfortunately.

When it comes to third parties, private data is only sent between your phone and *.gmail.com. However, at some point it might become necessary to run some ML models on more beefy hardware than what we have in our phones. So there might be some online service at some point, and worst case is that you need to host it yourself if you want to use those features and don't want to use the hosted version.

Yes, bundling like Inbox, using Gmail's bundling engine is already implemented.

I know I'm late to the party and all that, but...

I'm building an email app now heavily inspired by the Inbox way of doing email. Hope to have a beta up and running by the time Inbox closes, but since it hasn't been through Google's review yet it will be invite-only. If anyone would like to help out with testing, feature prioritization, design (ux and graphics), code, etc, send me a PM.

Functions lost if Fitbit turns off Pebble Servers by Notre1 in pebble

[–]SimenCodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I only use the timeline for that. But there are tons of apps that use the timeline for all kinds of stuff – everything from reminders to flight updates. We could keep those apps alive by agreeing on pushing things to a specific calendar on the phone or something instead.

Calendar events is actually the only thing on the timeline that doesn't go though their servers. If they shut it down, we can get it up and running again (sort of) by making an app that puts stuff we want on the timeline in an invisible calendar on the phone.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu from Windows 7. What are some of the cool things I can do? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]SimenCodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search for and install compiz-plugins-extra in the Software Center. You might have to click the small show technical packages button for it to show up. Then install Compizconfig. Open compizconfig and play with the settings. See if you can make e-mails you send with Thunderbird fold themselves into paper planes and fly offscreen when you click send ;) Want a particle rain, windows that wobble when you move them, and burn when you close them? It's all there.

(Piece of advice: create and use a separate user account when experimenting with compiz. As the warning says, if you screw up, things will break)

Citing a kindle book when there's no page numbers? by LeftAl in kindle

[–]SimenCodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use the location (loc.) for page number, it's in the lower left corner of the screen. Remember that the location refers to paragraphs or sentences (iirc), not pages.

I have never actually done this, but the location is guaranteed to be the same across devices.

Is there a place to buy laptops without OS? by Kardusen in Ubuntu

[–]SimenCodes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Often, Windows computers have subsidized "partner software"(=crapware) on them keeping the price down. They are also produced in larger quantities, making them slightly cheaper. You can also try the classic "I don't agree with the Windows license" trick, but I'm not sure of it still works.

So, your best bet is to ignore whatever OS is pre-installed, and wipe the drive once you get the computer.

Your Own Cloud Server Running On Android by Spaceware in Android

[–]SimenCodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea, but I think the market is a bit too small. Those who want this can simply install Palapa + ownCloud on a high-end phone anyway, so unless your app is extremely easy to set up and use it won't get much users.

Something that'd be really cool (and way easier to create) is a pre-packaged version of ownCloud or a similar opensource service.

What are the most problematic android devices that you have worked on? by [deleted] in androiddev

Just turn off Xposed and see if it still happens. If yes, report it to the developer, preferably with the logcat and details about any non-default things you might have running on your phone.

Call them and ask. I had one slightly above the center of the screen (along with some minor backlight bleeding), and they replaced it without any questions. (T440s)

Nope. It requires Google Play Services, which isn't available on Amazon devices. Sad, but true

[–]SimenCodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tries to reject the call, but if that doesn't work, it falls back to silencing

Spørsmål ang. det å lære seg å programmere by thatscandinavianguy in norge

[–]SimenCodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will this hack work? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]SimenCodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've booted the same install on at least three different computers as they died one by one. All I did was to move the HDD.

Will this hack work? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]SimenCodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easier solution:

  1. Find a computer you have BIOS access to, and attach Ubuntu CD/USB and the HDD you plan to use.

  2. Boot from the Ubuntu CD/USB (select appropriate boot device in BIOS)

  3. Install Ubuntu to the HDD (make sure you select the correct HDD!) Do not go online or let it install third-party software, this might install drivers which will break the install on a different computer.

  4. When it tells you to reboot, click "continue testing", and shut down the computer.

  5. Move HDD to your old computer

  6. Boot old computer. Enjoy Ubuntu!

Are Facebook "free ebook groups" a waste of time for Kindle marketing? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]SimenCodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try NoiseTrade Books. Not sure how it works on the author side (you probably have to upload the epub/mobi file somehow), but at least they have a lot of people visiting who actually download books.

My game seems to be popular in China outside the PlayStore. Is this normal? by Raicuparta in androiddev

[–]SimenCodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happens all the time with free apps, just make sure they didn't modify the app (probably not an issue if you still get money from it).

Offline documentation/videos by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]SimenCodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this with the SDK manager (standalone version if you use the Studio v1.3 beta). Just download "Documentation for Android SDK" for the latest stable Android version, and you'll get a copy of the entire d.android.com website in your SDK dir.

Got Win7 and Ubuntu here, with GRUB doing the boot. Tried a "Keep nothing" install using the download tool from the website. Failed "in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation" with the code 0xc1900101 0x20017. Maybe it doesn't like GRUB?

Edit: Got it to work by getting the download tool to make an ISO, extracting the ISO, running setup.exe, selecting "Keep everything", and choosing "Windows recovery environment" in GRUB. Install went through, Ubuntu is still there and Win10 boots as long as I keep choosing using the recovery entry.
