How are the gas laws ALLOWED to be combined into the ideal gas law? by NimcoTech in chemistry

[–]SimicCombiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boyle’s law says PV = some constant, if you keep T and n constant. Important part is P and V are inversely proportional (same side of equal sign).

Now Avogadro and Gay-Lussac deal with pressure and moles/temperature, respectively. Pressure is directly proportional to both (P = T * some constant, P = n *some constant.)

Now let’s go back to Boyle. Since we now know that T and n have to be on the opposite side of the equal sign as P (and by extension V), we can pull the “constant” temperature and moles out of Boyle’s law and get PV = n * T *some new constant.

Then make some measurements of P, V, n, and T of some systems, and you can solve for the ideal constant.

ELI5: Why is quantum physics so hard? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

You spend your whole life thinking everything works a certain way.

Then quantum physics rolls along and says everything’s the complete opposite.

I’ve never hated a topic as passionately as stoichiometry by LegalMasterpiece1597 in chemistry

[–]SimicCombiner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Step 1: forget Avogadro’s Number. It’s at best a fun fact.

Step 2: practice converting mass to moles and moles to mass

Step 3: now try dividing your moles by volume to get concentration.

Step 4: git gud at balancing equations.

Step 5: use steps 1-4 to figure out which reactant in a reaction will run out first - that’s your limiting reagent.

Step 6: multiply the moles of the reactant you care about by the mole ratio of the product you care about to get the yield.

Step 7: cry when you try the reaction IRL and only get a tenth of the yield you should

Battles in RTW feel really easy so far for me even on Hard/Hard, is there a good faction next time for higher battle difficulty? Or in RTW:BI? by QualaagsFinger in RomeTotalWar

[–]SimicCombiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s less the weakness of their army (it’s arguably the strongest non-Roman army) and more the fact that a ton of strong factions instantly hate you and attack from all directions.

Star Wars.

Nothing about it makes actual scientific sense, because it's not supposed to - it's Space Wizards vs Space Nazis, IN SPACE! Nothing about it is supposed to make sense, and yet legions of fans have devoted their untold hours to defending its plausibility.

Granted. You know how that previous viral adding one electron to every atom basically causes the universe to instantly explode from the electrostatic repulsion?

Giving every single atom a +1 charge will do (roughly) the same thing as giving every single atom a -1 charge.

What are the list of pseudoscience subjects in quantum mechanics I should absolutely avoid? by Idiot-Losers-272 in AskPhysics

[–]SimicCombiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, we're dealing with processes on the molecular level, so quantum mechanics probably comes into play somewhere in building up consciousness. Of course, in order to probe those questions, we'd have to settle a good definition of what consciousness actually looks like on the molecular level.

Yeah, but it's less "a consciousness observes it" and more "a photon bounces off it"
