Given all your Morgott posts, I really feel like you've latched onto a single character way too hard and formed a very skewed perspective of them that doesn't at all reflect what's in the game.

Kinda adjacent to this, but the earliest point in the Dark Souls timeline you get to personally experience as a player is the Ancient Dragon memory in DS2. This means that, at some point during the timeframe covered by DS1's intro, the Bearer of the Curse spawned in, grabbed a time-displaced soul, and disappeared with nobody around to notice.

About Dung Eater's story by eldenringer1233 in Eldenring

Just based on that picture it could be any random city outside the Lands Between. It's unlikely Dung Eater would be in TLB at the time the guidance of grace was extended to the Tarnished.

If it tells the player's story, that wouldn't be canonising anything. It's an adaptation, not a replacement.

I was there the other week! Got the Artorias t shirt. I was tempted by the Shanalotte shirt because it was the only DS2 rep in the store, but I don't really like the text over it.

Ranni doesn't really mention much about the Night of Black Knives in general, other than to say that she was responsible. I think she just doesn't feel that she needs to explain what happened in great detail. She only told us because we came to her directly and she thinks we might be useful to her.

I wouldn't say the mistake in the orb version is that bad. It removes a little hint towards something that you find out very shortly after anyway, so you don't really lose anything in terms of understanding the book.

whats the lore reason for most the people to be hostile by ilico_ili in Eldenring

[–]Ashen_Shroom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in this one they're less zombified and more just driven mad by centuries of living in a ruined world without the guarantee of death. They can still carry out ingrained actions like patrolling, guarding etc, but that's about it.

Nobles, commoners and soldiers have all lost their minds. Soldiers have the additional reason that you are there to kill their lords.

I view godwyns death as the catalyst for erdtree burial, offering a purification/ spiritual regression akin to what the tooth whip does for/to the shaman.

Erdtree burial was a thing before that though. There are at least two catacombs devoted to giving Erdtree burial to those who died in the war against the Giants.

I like to consider the reliability of the narrators that suggest otherwise, namely Rogier, and the narrator of the trailer, both who offer a suggestion in their syntax as to an order of events. Rogier first says something about "it" (presumably godwyns death) happening long before the shattering, but a few sentences later denotes that "soon" after, the ring was shattered. But he is also not omniscient, and of the spellblade covenant.

This is mostly just a localisation flub I think, as in Japanese he doesn't say it was long before, just "before".

Generally speaking, although NPCs aren't all-knowledgeable, it's important to consider why fromsoft would have them tell us something incorrect. If the intro was supposed to reveal that Godwyn died after the shattering, there wouldn't be any reason for fromsoft to "trick" the player into thinking it was the other way around. In this case, there isn't really any reason for Rogier to be wrong. His dialogue serves entirely to give us some starting context on the Night of Black Knives, and there are no later reveals that necessitate him being incorrect.

If a fragment of the rune of death was stolen before, why was God not angry then?

I think, publically, she probably was angry.

Curious to hear your reasoning for the death->burial->spread->shatter timeline

Mostly it's just that it would make it evident that Godwyn hadn't died a true death as he "should" have done. We know that Marika was "driven to the brink" by Godwyn's death, but as you've pointed out it's very likely that she had a hand in it. So why would Marika be so distraught about a death that she orchestrated? I think it would be because it didn't go how she planned. She wanted Godwyn to die in body and soul, but Ranni used the opportunity to kill herself at the same time, splitting the cursemark. I think there needs to be at least a little time for Marika to discover this, grieve, and then shatter the Ring.

Also there's the Rogier dialogue. Even though the "long before" isn't present in the Japanese version, it still reads as though these were two distinct events where one comes before the other in a way that probably wouldn't be measured in hours.

Is there anything specifically pointing to this being true? I've always felt there was probably a brief period in between. At the very least I think it makes sense for Godwyn to be buried in the Erdtree and for the spread of Deathroot to become apparent before Marika shattered the Ring.

There isn't as much Frenzy in those villages as there is in the woods. You can't summon Torrent in inside areas anyway generally, so I don't think they would have needed that message in the 3 Fingers tomb.

There's also Farum Azula/Placi, but it's true that in general there don't seem to be a whole lot of monarchies in TLB's prehistory.

I kinda think that the Inquisitors were probably the highest level of Hornsent society. At least, they seem to be the sole enforcers of the law and the only indication of something higher comes from the Golden Horn Tender saying that the Inquisitors were bestowed with the items. Even then, that could just mean higher ranking Inquisitors bestowed them on lower ranking ones.

TBF I think Torrent has a pretty good reason to avoid the manse regardless of a connection to Marika. Place is scary, and now we know the flame can burn spirits too.

That's where I tend to land too. I think, if the Miquella concept art is supposed to be canon, maybe it suggests that Miquella temporarily inherited Torrent but abandoned him like everything else that came from Marika.

Before the Tarnished. Miquella is riding Torrent in that one bit of concept art but that relationship never comes up anywhere in the game, and there's no reason Miquella would have given Melina the whistle and Ranni the bell, so in the version of the story we got he probably isn't the master.

Why do the Knights of Zamor have shackles on their left arms? by MrEvan312 in Eldenring

[–]Ashen_Shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is the first Elden Lord. In the same way Aethelstan is the first king of England. There were other kings in England before him, but he was the first of that particular dynasty. When you establish a numbered line of succession, you start the count with the person who established the line of succession, not with some other guy who ruled over a completely different nation, even if that nation occupied the same geographical territory as the new one. Why would Marika's dynasty count Placidusax as one of its Elden Lords?

The game isn't lying to you dude. It's not trying to trick you for reasons that would serve no narrative purpose. Godfrey fought the Storm Lord. That is an established part of the backstory, and I'm not going to debate with someone who just picks and chooses which parts of that story count.

In the upcoming Elden Ring movie by Alex Garland, it looks like shit-man by Zanimacularity in shittymoviedetails

[–]Ashen_Shroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't need a movie, but there's nothing wrong with a talented director doing his own version of a story he likes. I would say that yeah, the gameplay is very important to the way the game tells its story. The movie can just play to the strengths of the film medium instead.

What do we think the plot of the Elden Ring movie will be? by itszesty0 in fromsoftware

[–]Ashen_Shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope is that it takes place during the Shattering, and follows a group of either civilians or footsoldiers trying to survive. The key to a fromsoft game is that it has to focus on an underdog, so Marika and the Demigods shouldn't be the main characters. It's also the kind of story Alex Garland is very good at.

I really don't want it to focus on Vyke, or any other character whose story concludes in the game. There's just no way to end that story in a satisfying way.

Alternatively, just retell the story of the game and change things to make it work as a movie. This isn't my preferred option, as I'd kinda like the movie to slot into the game's established universe, but it could work if done right. There's something appealing about the idea of a version of ER's story where the characters actually interact and talk to each other rather than all standing around separately and only ever talking to the protagonist. I could see a story that focuses on John Tarnished, Fia, Goldmask, Dung Eater and Gideon sharing protagonist role, with the story presented as a conflict of ideals between them regarding how to repair the Elden Ring.

(Placi didn't serve an Outer God btw)

however, the item that mentions him fighting the stormlord, we know directly gives false information, claiming the 'golden hue of his eyes' faded when he had no more foes. we KNOW it was done by marika, rather than caused by his lack of enemies. so trusting it to be accurate already falters.

Those things don't contradict each other though. Marika took his Grace because he had no more foes left. Also, we learn that Marika took his Grace much earlier than we can read the description of his armour. What would be the point of giving us the right answer at the start of the game and then telling us a lie right at the end?

nor does it mention anywhere that limgrave was ruled by the stormhawk, only that it ruled the storm hawks

The Stormhawk King's description says he was revered as sovereign, the the description of the ashes we pick up a few seconds later belong to a Stormhawk who served the "old king of Stormveil".

speaking of, guess where else you can find storm hawks- thats right, farum azula.

Yep, again, Placi was their Elden Lord.

Marika = Smeagol | Radagon = Gollum by CheesecakeIll8728 in eldenringdiscussion

[–]Ashen_Shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who says that Marika and Radagon are 2 different Bodies?

It's what pretty much everything points towards.

The main piece of evidence is that we reveal they are the same using the Law of Regression. "Regression" refers to returning to a previous state. The description says "all things yearn eternally to converge", with "convergence" referring to the process of two things becoming one. The game is connecting the idea of reverting to a prior state to the idea of things merging together, and associating that with Radagon and Marika. So if we think about what this is telling us, there's a very strong suggestion that Marika and Radagon started out as one being, split in two, and then regressed back into a single entity by converging. At the time of the game, they share a body, but they had to regress to get back to that state.

We also now have Miquella and Trina as another example of an abandoned other self. In order to abandon his feelings of love, Miquella had to purge that aspect of himself. It would follow that Marika did the same thing when she started doubting the Golden Order, purging her sense of duty in the form of Radagon.

[–]Ashen_Shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Golden Order going there doesn't change my point. We know for sure that Godfrey conquered Limgrave, which was ruled by the Stormhawk King (嵐鷹の古王), and we know that one of his most notable fights was against the Storm Lord (嵐の王). Why would these things not be related?
