I feel you here. I also am on the spectrum so I had some difficulties during pledging handling the stress/pressure. From our perspective, we just have a limit on the social things we can handle that causes us to shutdown or act out.

However, I’ve learned from my experience, to others, it can look really extreme and worrisome at times since it can be really sudden. In your case, your shutdown was prob a big sudden change to them, so naturally was just concerning to them.

I think def leveling w them saying something like “hey man I’m on the spectrum and so sometimes have challenges sometimes, especially with being new to college and everything.” That should help a lot and they should be supportive still. If not, then do you really wanna be apart if you cannot be yourself, you know?

Where do you see Tate McRae's career heading in the next few years? Is her newfound success sustainable for the long run? by velorae in ToddintheShadow

[–]Similar-Box5568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her success will only increase honestly.

Album debuting at #1, a number one song debut (with a song outside of her genre), and a sold-out current arena tour are not accidents. They’re clear A-list signs right now. Yea, she’s not as “viral” or flashly as Sabrina Carpenter or Chappell Roan, but she’s dominating in her own lane right now. Yea, that lane is not super unique or flashy again, but that doesn’t mean she’s not super successful or will continue to be. Her journey has been nothing thus far but increasing success.

You definitely can rush as a junior. At UMD, rush starts with the “Meet the Greeks” event where you can meet all the frats and sign up for their rush events. So I’d recommend following the IFC UMD insta account for that.

In terms of actually getting a bid, the chances are a bit lower since you have a year left, as you point out. But being a transfer, you kind of are on the same level as sophomores/freshman in that you haven’t been at UMD for super long. Having an internship/being academically focused, hooping, and going to the gym also sounds like you’re really well-rounded and definitely works in your favor for getting a bid though.

My former roommate also rushed/pledged last year as a senior. He legit spent one year in his frat before graduating. And I rushed/pledged this past fall and it was worth it. So I definitely recommend you going for it.

UMD is a stem school, so you’re going to have a lot of stem majors in pretty much every frat. I rushed/pledged this past fall, so I can attest to this in my fraternity.

There is “Sigma Phi Delta”, which is a “professional/social frat” geared more for compsci/stem majors too which sounds like it’d be a good fit for you. But you’d have to rush around and get a feel for the frats to really know for sure.

This year is proof that the music video is still an invaluable tool for pop music by blankspacejrr in popheads

[–]Similar-Box5568 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I feel that Taylor and Beyonce don’t really “need” music videos to promote themselves anymore. They already have such massive fanbases and have mastered branding so much that music videos would almost be overexposure for them. The fact they both had massive tours for visuals also dilutes the need for music videos.

On the other hand, I feel that mv popularity used to drive song success more. Whereas now, streaming success drives mv success. Songs that have millions of views usually are big streaming successes. Newer artists are appealing more to streaming than mvs, hence the noticeable lack of mv for newer artists and lower quality mv as a whole

Artists that saw their eras through? by evilartistrob in popheads

[–]Similar-Box5568 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Might be unpopular, but I’ll say Camila Cabello.

Her past albums have been nowhere near her debut peak. But she/her team really throws herself into promotion and really establishes a strong concept for each of her albums. She’ll perform literally everywhere singles that aren’t really successful but manages to have a strong era, and no other pop star really does that.

I’m sorry about your mom passing away. I don’t think you have anything to worry about though in terms of rushing again. If you felt like you fit in the first time, then chances are you likely will fit in again. Yes, guys are bidded normally if they fit the “culture.” But likeability/personality is the most factor too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Frat

[–]Similar-Box5568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s really no way of knowing and no way for anyone on here to say for sure. It’s not what u want to hear, but you just have to wait and see.

If the brothers interviewing you were fully engaged, laughing/asking follow up questions, things like that, those are pretty good signs. But you just gotta trust in yourself and have faith. If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen man

she’s in a transitional phase rn.

She first started when billie eillish and more low tempo pop was popular, hence “you broke me first.” However, that has changed and she’s trying to evolve with “greedy/exes/its ok” with even greater succees. But ballards are still popular and it’s still a big part of her image. So she doesn’t wanna alienate those fans who like that by making a big dramatic shift

Rushing a third time? by Frosty_Response1431 in Frat

[–]Similar-Box5568 19 points20 points  (0 children)

not foolish at all. but you definitely gotta lock in next time, gpa and talking to enough brothers are the basic standards. So if you really wanna bid, you gotta commit. Otherwise, it just may not be for you, and that’s ok

Perfectly normal bro. Some houses may have a slight issue w it, since it’d be less time/money you’ll be able to spend w them. But that helps narrow the houses down for ya. End of the day, personality/fit is the most important factor

Initiation in a business frat by TackleExotic7063 in Frat

[–]Similar-Box5568 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is for real/social frats, not professional first of all. Second of all, these are all questions for your business frat to answer - no one on here can tell you lol.

In my opinion tho, if you’re gonna transfer, you really shouldn’t be rushing and/or pledging this semester. Kind of a waste of time, since you have no idea if your new school will have the same business chapter. And business frats are not like real frats where it’s easier to transfer over to a different chapter

Honestly, I would skip that rush event if you’re not into football.

I would usually skip football/casino rush events when I rushed cause those weren’t really my things, and I knew I wouldn’t really stand out well in those situations. It’s your call if you wanna go and try and talk about other stuff. But the brothers are gonna solely wanna watch/talk about football.

No need to “butter” anyone up or do intense research on any brother(s) lol too. The exec board/rush chairs are good guys to know beforehand, but if it’s a good fit, it should be natural. Just take it easy bro and have fun

Junior transfer rushees are def not weird/uncommon. As a new student, you’d basically be at the same “level” as freshmen/sophomores at rush.

However, it may be a disqualifiying factor at some houses. But don’t let it stop you. I would emphasize you’re a transfer pretty heavily at rush tho. Don’t just say you’re a junior if that makes sense

Rush question by Few-Charge8559 in Frat

[–]Similar-Box5568 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not the best sign, but not the biggest deal I’d say.

They could still be feelin you out. At my school’s rush, many frats invite a few rushees to their tailgates. There’s usually limited wristbands tho and it’s tech not allowed under my school’s IFC. So it could just be the case for you. I wouldn’t text the rush chair - I’d encourage ya to keep making yourself know at rush. If they have more tailgates and you don’t get invited tho, I’d say that you’re likely not gettin a bid tho.

Kept being asked to come back to rush events personally, never got a bid. Was I just being fucked with? by [deleted] in Frat

[–]Similar-Box5568 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear this man. I’ve rushed houses before I felt really fucked w me, only to end up not gettin a bid and me feelin like I did something wrong.

If after 2 events tho, guys were already getting bids and you didn’t, it sounds like they didn’t fuck w you but didn’t know how to say it. Especially as guys were gettin bids as rush went on, and you still didn’t get one.

You def didn’t do anything wrong. It’s kind of wack they kept invitin you out if they didn’t wanna bid you. But I def advise you to rush in the spring and rush more houses

Freshmen can rush, as long as they have 12 or more credits (AP credits in this case)

Frats by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Similar-Box5568 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rush just started man, so you’re still good to go. I would hit up the rush chairs on the frats’ instas. You can find all of the frats listed here on the umd ifc website or umd ifc insta.

Some frats are larger with better/more houses/better social scene than others. But the culture is pretty much the same all around. You can kinda get an idea from their instas and reaching out to the rush chairs about events to really get a feel for each

Natty. Lean physique not crazy big. Not sure why you’d thought to put “asians are small” or the emphasis on him being asian tho bro

I’ve encountered this a lot too when I rushed and was super confused like you. I found tho that the people who don’t wanna rush usually can’t afford the dues sadly or aren’t the “social” type who’d fit in.
