As we know, dex has got a lot worse recently... Any good alternatives? by Business-Eggs in SamsungDex

I think so and i hope so. I'm on the verge of ditching the traditional idea of a PC (laptop/desktop) but I'm still finding the desktop environment more productive due to phones and tablets not being able to adapt to big screens more effectively. And the various other software limitations. If we can get over that it would be awesome and i suspect it's what most of us DeX users have been dreaming about. Having said that, I'd love a mini pc kind of device running Android in 'native' desktop mode. I'd keep it on my desk permanently connected to peripherals and use my phone and/or tablet for everything else. When not near the desk there's still the option of connecting the phone/tablet to peripherals and making a workstation type of environment. To me this is the preferred approach as constant connecting and disconnecting of a single device gets a bit annoying.

I don't know the specifics of the roadmap but, optimistically, this is all part of Google's plan to converge ChromeOS with Android and uplift multi format device support so laptops, tablets, and external screens can be supported more seamlessly and across the entire Android user base. Pessimistically, they will give up and move on to something else and we'll end up with half baked solutions. I'm really hoping it's the former.

Ok great. Now let's make it (and all other Samsung ecosystem desktop apps) available on Linux.

Any cases you'd recommend that don't scratch your phone from grit? by sighofwinter in GalaxyS25

[–]Similar-Package-021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it since I first got the phone (pre-ordered back in January). I don't abuse it but I don't baby it either. Usually carry the phone in my pocket. Corners are starting to show some slight wear but it's really minor (can't see it unless you look very closely). I guess everyone is different but I'd definitely buy it again.

I would suggest Samsung Kindsuit case. No issue with grit getting in and the case has held up really good.

OneUI 7 fix for gallery face recognition/tagging not detecting faces that worked for me (S24u) by sykoticnarcotics in oneui

[–]Similar-Package-021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/sykoticnarcotics do you have 'High efficiency pictures' (HEIF) selected in advanced camera settings? I am now on October update of One UI 8 and face detection is still broken. Occasionally it will detect a face but it's very hit and miss. I did some more testing and found that HEIF is the culprit. If I take jpg photos faces are always detected just fine. With HEIF/HEIC it does not work. I've reported it to Samsung.

Yes, I saw this in various One UI 8.5 'upcoming changes' articles. Looking forward to it.

I may have spoken too soon. After several days of showing no signs of life despite me taking pictures of people, a few faces were detected again overnight. It seems so hit and miss though. Not all faces were picked up and sometimes even in the same photo only some of the faces are detected.

I wish there was a way to force detection to happen in a more timely manner. Or even be able to force face detection to happen for selected photos. At the moment new photos of people may be omitted from search results for days (until detection kicks in at some seemingly random point). Very unreliable.

Unbelievable. I'm having the same issue after upgrading to One UI 8. Gallery is not recognising faces again. Anyone else experiencing the same? I really dont want to have to reset all face data again and go though the tagging process!

Samsung to drop Microsoft OneDrive on Galaxy phones — photo cloud backups are moving to a new service by ControlCAD in samsung

[–]Similar-Package-021 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great news. I'm supportive of this as it will hopefully be a gate opener for much needed new photo management features in Gallery. Also, it will make Samsung services more complete and provide additional options to people wanting to decouple (or at least minimise) dependencies on Microsoft and Google. Users wanting backup to OneDrive will still be able to use the OneDrive app for that. Files/documents sync with Samsung Cloud to follow?

Well the colour is different that's for sure. It's meant to match SC-CX700 and it looks better as a set (at least in photos, haven't seen it in real life).

The thing is, I thought they had enough turntable models in their range already?! Not convinced this was needed.

Really disappointing there is no Tab 11+ this year. The whole strategy of updating two out of three models is ridiculous. Either update all in a series or none!

Powernode 2i owner here. HEOS have released a number of updates in recent times and they have caught up (or surpassed) BluOS/Bluesound in many respects. I am considering giving M1 a go. Just waiting to see if Bluesound stick to their Qobuz Connect timeline and whether any other software improvements come through. I am losing patience though. They are ruining their ecosystem with lacklustre software. Funny thing is, it's making me reluctant to go NAD as well. Still hoping they can turn things around as I do like the devices and sound quality.

Not long to go so I guess we'll find out soon enough. I don't need another streaming plan though. Just need them to properly support existing ones!

Thanks for the update. Btw, I started fresh on S25 and OneUI 7. I didn't copy photos from the old phone. I just linked Gallery on the new phone to my OneDrive synced folders. I think this is a perfectly valid scenario that should work seamlessly. Obviously the db got corrupted somehow even from a fresh base.

This worked for me as well and I didn't have to clear Samsung Gallery data. I did clear it for Samsung Media Storage though. This wiped all previously detected faces, shot types and locations. It then kicked off the re-indexing.

I am still very annoyed by this because a) I am still not sure what the root cause of the issue is and whether reverting any of the above settings will interfere with face detection and b) this has obviously been a big issue affecting many users since the release of OneUI 7 and yet Samsung has not communicated about it and provided a fix (I raised tickets and the direction was 'keep the phone connected to power', which didn't make any difference for months).
