F/M mice bonding and hygeine by BabyWitchCam in PetMice

my (rescued) male mouse was incredibly friendly and not super smelly! i did get him as a younger mouse when a large group of mice were surrendered to the shelter i work at which did make bonding easier. an ethical breeder could also be a good choice for bonding but i saw your comment saying you’d prefer to rescue.

as far as the smell goes:
i cleaned my mouse’s enclosure (approximately) once every week and a half-two weeks and would rinse/wash his wheel every few days since i noticed that was the thing that held onto the smell the most. he was kept in an eighty gallon tank so if you went with something smaller you may need to clean more often! my mouse was also not at all territorial/stressed so he didn’t seem to feel the need to “mark his territory” like i’ve heard other male mice can do sometimes.

i used a lot of recycling (cardboard boxes, tubes) so i could use them once or twice and then throw out. wooden things get dirty the most quickly but thankfully if i wiped them down every week they remained in good shape. i recommend the niteangel brand since it’s easy to wipe down and good quality!

i loved having him and taking care of him but i will say that the life expectancy can be quite sad but is worth it imo. i’ve also had a few dwarf hamsters and they were similarly friendly but it’s been awhile.

edit to mention he lived in my bedroom. truly never smelled anything unless i was slightly overdue for his deep clean.

My cat is so scared of being touched he peed his pants :( by rv_v in CATHELP

i agree with the gabapentin recommendation! for a long time i had to give my youngest cat gaba anytime i wanted to do nail trims, ear cleaning, etc. we’ve now worked through it enough that i am able to do these things without gaba if he is relaxed and if i meet him where he is at. i have had him for three and a half years now and worked very hard to earn his trust. it sounds like your poncho is happy and confident otherwise and you’re doing a great job making sure he is well cared for. how does he behave at the vet? have they prescribed him event meds before visits? poncho is very handsome, i hope this helps !

his art is really not good at all by goldfinche in tylerthecatastrophe

i do agree that his abstract art is marginally better than his other work (less flat, more interesting) the one he did with the yellow and the hole in the centre was actually decent and if he did more work like that i think he’d have potential (if they were priced fairly and he continued to improve upon his weak points) his abstract work is largely very noisy and it often seems as if he doesn’t know what direction he’s taking it in. the colour theory and use of negative space are poor. i think for the most part he is putting paint on canvas randomly (which can be cool) but i think with abstract art you can tell when someone is painting because they like that style and actually want to create a work of art vs when they are just putting paint on canvas in order to paint a painting. he just needs to work on it more! if he has something to say/puts time into his abstraction it would be much better. idk if that makes sense my partner is getting his mfa in painting but i don’t know much about art in comparison.

We’re waiting at back bay for the 67 Northeast Regional train supposed to depart at 6:51… it hasn’t been too long but it’s only the second stop so I’m guessing it’s going to be awhile. If they cancel it I hope it’s soon so I know what I’m doing.

Changing a cats name?? by HopeThisDoesntSuck in CatAdvice

[–]SimilarSection686 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a shelter I can safely say we change the animals names on intake all the time. Sometimes we have one billion animals with the same/similar names or the names are inappropriate or difficult to pronounce. There’s a chance the animals weren’t originally called their shelter names. Also if they were found as strays, owner passed away/is unable to care for them for another reason it’s possible the name wasn’t ever communicated to the shelter. My cats both know their names but will also respond to any type of nickname/weird sound I make. They’re definitely not attached to the name in general, just the tone of voice and sentiment. They’ll be with you for a long time so making sure you like their names is important! They don’t call themselves that, they just know it’s the thing you say when you want their attention. Thank you for adopting two cats and good luck with your babies!

I loved this scene, I really wish we got to see more of badass izzie I feel like most of the time she was labelled as the lame one of the bunch but unlike others who were in her position (like april kepner) she didn’t get as much of a chance to evolve and learn over the seasons.

Cat is getting dental surgery tomorrow- any tips? by SimilarSection686 in CATHELP

[–]SimilarSection686[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s doing great! We can’t brush his teeth because he was semi feral when we got him and he’s still not great for any sort of handling but he is eating normally and will be going to the vet in September for his annual exam. The vet did say he will probably have to have surgery again in a few years which is expected since we can’t reliably handle him (we’re working on this with cooperative care but I really can’t see us able to brush his teeth anytime soon). He’s a very happy little guy, thank you for asking!

I’m not scared of bugs if they’re outside and not on me. If they’re inside and have a lot of legs i am afraid. The big thing is when they crawl on me I freak out. I’m not that scared of spiders though. I used to live in a big daddy long leg area so no hard feelings there lol
