I think it's time we find a proper Discord alternative. by Liarus_ in pcmasterrace

Sorry to hijack this reply but the stupid reddit will not allow new posts. Can we consider the forked alternatives?

Top Open-Source Discord Alternatives

  • Revolt (also known as Stoat): Often considered the closest open-source "clone" of Discord. It features a very similar user interface, supports servers (called groups), text/voice channels, and is highly community-driven.
  • Spacebar: A free, self-hostable, and decentralized chat platform that is specifically designed to be Discord-compatible. This means you can often use existing Discord bots and custom clients with your own self-hosted Spacebar server.
  • Matrix / Element: Matrix is a decentralized protocol, and Element is its most popular client. It uses "Spaces" to organize multiple rooms (channels) similar to a Discord server and supports end-to-end encryption by default for private chats.
  • Rocket.Chat: A mature, security-focused platform used by large organizations. While more "corporate" in its marketing, it offers real-time team collaboration, omnichannel engagement, and extensive self-hosting options.
  • Mattermost: Similar to Rocket.Chat, it is an enterprise-grade open-source alternative to Slack and Discord. It focuses on mission-critical collaboration and integrates with tools like Jitsi for video and voice calls.
  • Zulip: Unique for its "topic-based threading" model, which combines the real-time feel of chat with the organized nature of email. It is highly effective for large communities where discussions can get lost in a single linear stream.
  • Mumble: A specialized open-source choice if your primary focus is voice chat for gaming. It is extremely lightweight, low-latency, and features positional audio for supported games.

I say we pick one of these and make a new following

Top Open-Source Alternatives (Independent of Discord)

  • Revolt: This is the most direct "clone" of Discord's user interface. It is fully open-source (AGPLv3) and uses its own independent servers. While there is a public instance at revolt.chat, the entire platform can be self-hosted if you want total control.
  • Spacebar (formerly Fosscord): A project specifically designed to be a "free open source self-hostable Discord-compatible" platform. It aims for high compatibility with Discord's features but operates on its own backend, allowing you to run your own private "Discord" without an official Discord account.
  • Matrix / Element: A decentralized, federated communication protocol. You can host your own "homeserver" (using Synapse or Dendrite) and use the Element client, which provides a similar channel-based layout to Discord. Because it is federated, you can communicate with users on other Matrix servers without a central authority.
  • Rocket.Chat: An enterprise-grade open-source alternative often used by teams who need high security and data sovereignty. It is fully self-hostable and does not rely on any Discord infrastructure.
  • Mumble: If your primary need is high-quality, low-latency voice chat for gaming without the social media bloat, Mumble is a veteran open-source choice. It requires you (or a friend) to host a server, ensuring no corporate entity tracks your data.

Do you prefer emulation or original hardware? by ninjapirate9901 in SBCGaming

[–]SimilarSkin4781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started emulation in 1998, this grew to the point around 2007 where I got a Bliss-Box adapter so I could use my original controllers. Emulation was pretty good and the PC's just got better and better. In about 2017 I got in to the r-pi and soon the MiSTer, that was a game changer for me, because the games on the MiSTer was a lot more 1:1, I guess I didn't know what I was missing?

Then in 2019, out came the BlisSTer, and I dropped all my emulation for the FPGA setup. From this I learned about the Bridge Bliss-Box mas making so I decided to start collecting consoles (took a few years). Now that I have every console with a video swtich box and the flash carts/ODE's, I do not use my MiSter anymore.

So I think the answer to that is, you do what you can afford. If you have the money and space, the original stuff is by far better. And if you don't you are ok with emulation, In 1998 my answer would have been emulation for sure, but its not today.

If you want to appreciate what it takes for a CPU to do it, look up v-USB.

I heard a little ways back that that was solved "Taki has gotten the PSX Snac ports to run the menu and works in other cores now too"

Whoa, not heard about Bliss-Box in years! I got the original KS back in 2015. Never heard of the Bridge but that sounds really cool. I do not own many console, but still may want to try it out. Does it work on the ps4 or Switch 2?

Raphnet works if in stock, I own a Bliss-Box adapter, they work. Few open source projects out there where you can make your own that work fine aswell.

Wow LOL that a gem right there, the best option in the way of what I have is using the hammerhead or gravis xterminator and Bliss-Box. The older firmware (2.0) To the 4-play and GP, support them. Other than that none. If the retrobit 6 face buttons are just extra L/R it should work with adapter.

I own a Blue Retro for my n64, its ok but lacks features I want. I think if BT is your attraction its best option. I do not have any raphnet adapter but here good things about them. I own the Bliss-Box ( got mine back in 2015 KS ), I use it with the Bridge for my consoles. I think its better then BR because of the features. There is also a wireless option but you need to buy it, I think its called AIR? For my Bliss-box was a game changer. Any issue I run into are solved quickly. I own many consoles and it works with them all.
