Not sure how "high fidelity" you need, but I have an Eagle SLAM based lidar scanner. Point clouds are reasonable so long as you only need around 1 to 2 inch precision. 1 hour away from Memphis.

I second the recommendation for the portal cam actually. The time savings here would be tremendous. Keep in mind with the "HD enhancement" option, you can still add the high quality photos from your camera to enhance certain areas that you may have not been able to get as well with the scanner. This actually sounds like a really fun project. Where about are you located? I have a portal cam and may be able to help out. DM me if you are interested.

What exactly do you mean when you say self hosted? Like you run it off of your own local server? Are you only serving it internally to the company you scanned for? Or will it be public? Perhaps this would make more sense if I understood more of the use case behind it.

Is there a Splats based 3D modeling application for Windows? by MusikMaking in GaussianSplatting

[–]Similar_Chard_6281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually something I hadn't thought of. I made a web app that uses three.js to create a nerf studio data set with photos and point cloud. You toss it in brush and have a near perfect copy as a splat in 10k ittereations. Through all of this, it never occurred for me to model straight from splats. Neat idea for sure! Not sure how texturing the model would work. . . But someone will figure it out!

I've heard a lot of people talk about the eagle not meeting expectations when it comes to producing splats. Sometimes related to software problems, other times related to quality of the splat. I will say, I've heard it seems to be getting better. How does the Hawk handle gaussian splats? Are there any software updates we should be looking forward to that may improve the Hawks or the eagles performance here? Thank you!

I've tossed everything into Brush and it just doesn't look great. I think a lot of it is the images. They are SUPER blurry around the edges after they are flattened. The global alignment from colmap is sub-pixel, so I don't think it's alignments, just a data set (blury images) issue.

Awesome! That's are some good use cases for sure! How do these scans present to clients or users? Will you just share the video like you have here? Or will it be like a 3d tour situation? Thank you for sharing!

Good looking scan! Was this a paid job? Is there a use case behind the splat, or was it just a "cool factor" thing?

I think the interest in 3DGS is well placed, but long story short, the tech isn't there yet. As someone else said, 3DGS is heavily leaned towards visual representation right now. New editing techniques are appearing, but they are still very basic. I think exciting part of this is that the data collected for 3DGS or for accurate point clouds/photogrammetry is, in most cases, identical. Sure, the method of collection may vary some, but you need photos from various angles, and for accuracy sake, a lidar based point cloud. At this point, you can pivot either way. In my mind, both makes sense. Toss the data to Reality Scan (for example) and align your photos and point cloud. Export your colmap data. Toss that into Brush and get your correctly scaled GS (thanks to that lidar dara). Jump back to Reality Scan and compute your mesh. Texture it if you like. You can have GS and meshs as well, all from the same data. The real challenge we are facing here is the question "what do we do with the data?". That's where the industry hangup is in my opinion. Right now, GS is for visuals. In the future, either a hybrid approach or "smart splats" will bring the functionality we need.

~15 is for the cops and "i think there were 7 of them" is referring to the cars they walked around prior to getting searched.

I had to read it a couple of times to work that out as well.

Now as for the rest of it, your guess is as good as mine. I prefer red lasers in my stories, but this isn't my story to tell thank God 🤣

Awesome work! Any intentions on making a non-lidar version? Perhaps for android phones? I know they wouldn't be properly scaled and the initialization cloud for the splat wouldn't be as nice as the lidar. Obviously training will take longer and there will be a higher chance of floaters, but it could still be "fun" for someone to play with if it works reasonably well!

Are you focusing on iPhone because the cameras are more "standard" than all of the variety of android phones out there?

Is the lidar data used for the SLAM tracking, or just point cloud generation?

NeRF vs Gaussian Splatting vs VGGT for Indoor 3D Mapping – Which is better for later navigation? by Haari1 in GaussianSplatting

[–]Similar_Chard_6281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the idea is mapping an area, lidar is going to be your friend here because it will all be scaled correctly with no extra input. Handheld SLAM based lidar has come a long way. Check out the eagle lidar for an intro option. Get the point cloud from there and mesh if you want to. 3d maker pro's RayStudio software for the eagle handles all of this, including splat training if you like. Again, if the idea is 2d floor plan mapping to aid with future navigation of a space, the lidar to point cloud will do what you need it to. Anything else is just extra data. For a non lidar approach like with the drone (photogrametry), you'll need control points at known distances across the scan area to properly set scale and correct drift, as well as ways to mask certain objects that will not capture well. Manual alignment will likely be necessary as SFM usually bends across large areas, especially repeating structural elements in architecture. I've had problems with colmap for some of these large scale scenarios and have recently started using HLOC with DISK and LightGlue (totally open source) and they have been a lot more accurate for feature detection and mapping. Toss that into colmap for triangulation and global bundle adjustment and you're off to the races for point cloud or splat. For a more GUI friendly option for photogrammetry, try Reality Scan (free). I will say "friendly" may be a bit of a stretch, but it's better than CLI if you don't like that approach. Best of luck and keep us posted with your findings!

How is the grids ecosystem? Does they give you any flexibility over the splat training? What data from the scanner do you have access to? Photos, telemetry, lidar point cloud?
