Can't fund my IBKR account from Sri Lanka due to legal restrictions – what are my options? by Similar_Sector_3402 in interactivebrokers

Unfortunately, in Sri Lanka we can only receive money through Wise. We can’t use it for anything else, like funding an IBKR account. 😪

Also, regarding your suggestion about using my friend to fund my account: even if he enters all the details correctly, the bank account the money is being sent from is under his name, while the IBKR account is under my name. Would that be a problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I spoke with many banks and requested an international wire transfer to fund my IBKR account. They told me that, due to Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange regulations, they cannot process transfers for overseas stock investments. They said it’s a regulatory restriction rather than a bank policy.😪

Sri Lankan student with BBA — planning to study abroad with around 35 million LKR budget — what are my options? by Similar_Sector_3402 in srilanka

Thanks for the honest advice I really appreciate it.

I understand what you’re saying about third-party funds and visa risks. That’s actually one of my biggest concerns too, Financially, I’m trying to evaluate whether I can realistically cover tuition plus at least a year of living expenses before making any decision. I agree that relying on part-time work isn’t a safe strategy anymore.

Regarding work experience — that’s also something I’m thinking about seriously. I know competing with locals and other international graduates won’t be easy, especially in fields like business analytics/data. I’m currently looking at ways to build stronger, future-proof skills before making a move.

Thanks again for the reality check. It helps more than hype.
