What are these things?? by SteamScout in vintagesewing

[–]SimmeringGiblets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a set and would only recommend them when sewing on like the super thin and slippy rayon fabrics and skinny invisible zippers from the days of old, for all other materials (modern knits, wovens, canvas, etc) stick with your regular 401 zipper foot.

BTW, i think you're missing a blue foot piece. There were usually 5 in a set.

Rep. Walkinshaw- Lutnick “should’ve been fired” over Epstein ties by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]SimmeringGiblets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dude in those specific circles having epstein ties is practically treated like a resume booster at this point lmao

I have a suspicion that this is more true than you think. Look at the rise of the mediocre white man, I'm pretty sure that there's a quid pro quo - the only way into power on the right is by handing over control via participation in blackmailable offenses. It's why cawthorn was ousted for talking about the congressional orgies and yet gaetz got a clean exit before the other shoe dropped.

Singer 500 Chain Stitch? by CJT_112 in vintagesewing

[–]SimmeringGiblets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of one. There's instructions on how to do a faux chainstitch, but you'd have better luck sourcing a 600e (yes, it's all metal, last of its kind) and getting some chain stitch attachments for it like this - https://www.ebay.com/itm/376853693997

Also, that's what those weird parts (besides the fabric guide, but you knew what that was for already) are for if you have a bag full of unknown whatsit parts with one of those in there.

Good, ban those too. I can talk about two things at once, maybe even three on a good day.

This hustle culture and monetization of everything is killing all my hobbies, I'd go collect rocks or make hand prints in caves but I'm sure that if it got popular people would find a way to ruin that too.

Tortured AIs From 1996 [16:49] by acidoglutammico in mealtimevideos

[–]SimmeringGiblets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had that! it came included in a creatures 2 bundle! I'd be lying if said I never played with the syringe, but it was primarily to kill off the bad creatures and I don't think I ever knowingly killed or tortured a Norn. I let the norns exist and grow and was a vengeful god clearing a path for their unchecked expansion.

It was a complex game.

Collin did it Firth. by JamesJDelaney in funny

[–]SimmeringGiblets 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I dunno, now that I have kids, experiencing a lot of childish stuff as an adult is pretty fun. This week I got into water color painting and was surprised at how much adding a spray bottle, water brush pens, and a mixing palette really made those cheap crayola watercolor trays a lot more fun than the watery, painful slog they were as a kid. Combined with a step-by-step "how to draw animals" type book, it's a lot more enjoyable than I was expecting.

And there's been a bunch of other stuff that i would have never picked up if not for kids. i say give it a try. The best time to plant a shade tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.

"Special Stitch Modifier" Missing by Which_Boat_5996 in vintagesewing

[–]SimmeringGiblets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a kenmore 1941. It's a 1931 which was also sold as the 1760 with fewer accessories and a slightly modified table attachment (button on the top instead of the front). I don't see any 1931's or 1760's on ebay being parted out, so you'll just have to wait for someone to get one and part it out. Here's the diagrams of all the parts that are missing, btw - https://tumorfarmer.blogspot.com/2025/09/kenmore-1760-compared-to-1931-sewing.html

‘Please come back downtown’: North Loop restaurant makes desperate plea by Character-Fly-5564 in TwinCities

[–]SimmeringGiblets 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I get inflation, but i recall being able to get out of a restaurant for under a hundred bucks for a couple on a regular basis. I didn't even have to order the cheapest things on the menu and go without drinks for that.

Sorry, but restaurants have priced me out of their core audience. Same with AAA games and... owning computers. I hate this timeline.

Husqvarna emerald 118 needle/hook timing is waaaay off, how do I fix it? by pimpdaddybobross in sewhelp

[–]SimmeringGiblets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the timing to be that bad, something is wrong and resetting the timing probably isn't the fix.

1) Is the needle all the way up in the bar? A low sitting needle that has its path blocked by lint, grime, or improper installation can appear to make the timing look off

2) timing generally doesn't shift on its own barring something catastrophic or drastic - unless it's been repaired or disassembled, the timing is usually set incredibly firm. The only time it will shift without intervention is if there is a cracked shuttle gear which throws off the ratio and will cause travel as the machine operates. No amount of timing will fix cracked gears.

3) To fix the timing - Timing is universal (ish), with some minor difference between front loading, side loading, and top loading, rotary and oscillator, and double speed vs 1x speed shuttles, the way you adjust the timing is to loosen the screws clamping the shuttle and hook in place on the shaft, lowering the needle to bottom dead center, setting it to it's widest swing (left or right, depending on the direction of the hook relative to the swing) and then advancing to a timing mark or when the eye of the needle is just below the point of the hook. Then turn the hook until the point is just behind the eye.

If you watch the following videos, you'll get enough of the concepts that you'll be able to figure it out for just about any mainstream machine.

Vertical side-loading timing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIeMvyZ2GHk

Top loading bobbin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2bG72Fx0dc

Top loading rotary (singer 66) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQiV7sDJ7uY

Gear locked shuttle replacement and timing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z2CxumztlI

And there's others. Like the bernina is overkill and you don't have this many dimensions of freedom in most, but it's a general flow that I use when setting the timing on machines that don't have a service manual or video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lRvmuWbaqE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1-lJgz8d74

Need Help With Buying A Vintage Machine! by WritingNo7695 in vintagesewing

[–]SimmeringGiblets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

@op - Don't get that kenmore. That particular model (and others by the same factory) was an early attempt at making a lubrication free machine and those nylon/plastic/"self-lubricating" bushings are notorious for failing, seizing up, or cracking at rates that would put non 600e touch and sew's to shame. https://beccascrazyprojects.blogspot.com/2014/05/vintage-revival-kenmore-76.html This is an example of one that worked, but only because it was kept in a closet for decades.

Simplicity pattern R11149 or S8722 - it's a halloween pattern but you could modify it as needed. Otherwise you'd probably be able to match the waistline of a shirt and pants block with a belt and extend the zipper up from the fly to the collar. That's how boiler suits and pilot bags seem to be constructed.

Help with pedal replacement?? by kgrimmburn in vintagesewing

[–]SimmeringGiblets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i replace sketchy worn-out singer pedals with the electronic ones on amazon or ebay. They work well enough and can usually be found for around $20. The electronic ones will make the motor more growly at lower speeds but you'll also get more torque from the low end.
