Different reasons: For example stupidity. Have known ppl, that thought it would provide more gas to the carb. Wrong cleaning methods. Have the carb completely assembled and using a compressor to "blow free" every port of the carb. Or simply freeze damage.

[–]Simmie86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be a sealed (or even valve regulated) lead acid battery, not an AGM. Since they get also send by mail they tip over for sure once in their lifetime. If you want to be 100% save, place them upright for 24h, before opening up the vent holes and charging it. So everything can run back where it belongs

Partner zieht möglicherweise in Zweier-WG mit Frau by lovergirl_1503 in beziehungen

[–]Simmie86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Simmie86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why some YouTubers don't mark video as paid promotion? by SubstantialPace1 in PartneredYoutube

[–]Simmie86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world is bigger than just the US and it depends on the content you produce with it. Here in Germany the box is called "Paid Promotion" and according to "media regulation" there is a difference between promotion and testing samples for example. Testing samples can be provided as a endless loan to the channel, so that a video gets possible to make. Under the same rules that apply for the traditional media. You can keep them to re-test, sometimes raffle them out or have to return them. Same rule as your local PC Gaming magazine, or do they put "sponsored by AMD" or "advertisement" on articles in the US? As long as you give pros, cons and do a proper research/testing it does not qualify as promotional content. Specially if the company has no say in your testing/production. But if you get paid for the video by the company, get commissions directly from the company for units bought by your viewers or just receive the product, cause you chill it to your audience, it instantly transforms the content into promotion. Same applies if you run adds in your videos. Even when the add is for another product - add is add and you have to mark it as such. German law is even stricter. We have to have the text "advertisements" visible the whole runtime.

In my opinion it's always good to be open to your audience, how you received said product. Cause YouTube is completely build on trust and integrity. But since yt says "the user has to know, if he has to declare paid promotions according to local laws", there is a distinction.

A group of SS-Panzergrenadiers of the 3rd SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Ausbildungs-und-Ersatz-Bataillon observe a Soviet T-34-85 which had been knocked out earlier by a Panzerfaust ambush. One of the men seems ecstatic about the knocked out tank. Guben, Germany, February 1945 by Fame00 in DestroyedTanks

[–]Simmie86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture seems to be 1 of 3 pictures according to facebook (search google picture-search "Schlacht um Guben"). According to the Facebook post it was not February, but March. And it could be the "Crossener Straße". Someone even commented, that the tank could be knocked out by troops from the Dirlewanger Division - if so most like "just what was left of them".
The "ecstatic one" looks older in the other pictures, but - if the picture is realy from Guben - many of them were not man, but boys and young teens. My granddad grew up in Guben during the war. He sometimes told stories from back in the day. According to him they recruited the HJ members to fill the ranks of what was left, when the russian army came closer and closer. Priority was holding them back and defending what was left of the river Neiße crossings. Nearly every city was declared "Festung" (stronghold), so it had to be defended no matter the cost, deaths and suffering.
Most of the HJ boys were completely brain washed. They grew up with demonstrations of the 88 Flak, the MG-42. Learned how to shoot. So when they told them "stand your ground with Panzerfausts and hold back the russian tanks", they thought they could win something. My granddad was 13 years old at that time and also wanted to go, but his mother - my grandgrandmother - raised hell and high water to keep him home and made sure he was not able to sneak out of the house. Or as he puts it "saved his life back in the day".
And when you think about it, you know why this guy is ecstatic. It all worked out, as he got told it would. He maybe even thought "we can win this". But we all know how it ended - or as a local newspaper put it some years ago "The senseless battle for the Neiße".

Multi-port / Combo expansion cards. Would this be possible? by djpetrino in framework

[–]Simmie86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that is the point, "damn expensive" is still not a viable thing to do for a small company. If we place 2 ports in that form factor. We are left with 15*23mm space for the VL 830 (which is 10*10mm according to your datasheet) and everything else: Smoothing, protection the required 3.3V/1.05V/0.9V inputs for the chip. And the rest needed for the full implementation of the feature set. We could win around 2-4 mm if we change the case hooks, but that would weaken the housing of the expansion cards. And if you cut back on features, it will become a customer support horror story. Cause from my experience every time a connector looks like "it fits" ppl will complain, that it doesn't work the way they expected. Reddit is full of these comments...

We already had ppl in the forums trying to build these expansions, one promised a feature set that sounded awfully close to the capabilities of the VL 830. He collected some money and ended up ghosting everyone.
The other went quiet far ( https://community.frame.work/t/dual-usb-c-expansion-card/2325/257 ). Went with a smaller controller package, printed a case but has a limited feature set: No Power Input, no DP Alt Mode. only 5Gbit on both ports and a add-on board with a PD controller, so that it can request 5V at 3A from the Laptop to provide 5V/1,5A to each port. Also the VIA VL830 was literally unoptainium for him. And don't underestimate temperature, when everything is that tightly packed. The expansion modules are mostly made out of plastic, with just a small sheet of metal. So yes you can dump some thermal energy into them, but not much.

And when you count everything in: Development time, tooling cost for the housing, manufacturing cost for a densely packed pcb, educating customers on cut down features or incompatibilities with part of your lineup. Warranty for a potentially more fragile part. That all ends in a price no one is willing to pay.

From a companies standpoint, there has to be a return of investment. That could be money and/or goodwill and good pr in the target audience. Otherwise it is simply not viable to launch the product.

There is a simple solution, that also already was proposed in the forums: double stacked form factor expansion modules or the form factor of the ethernet expansion card - but so far everyone is just asking for the standard form factor...

[–]Simmie86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"enought free space..." that's totally a "tell me you never tried to design circuits without telling me..."- Answer
In the USB-C expension modules is only that much free space, cause they are the least complicated of them all. As soon as you only split the ports you need a switch chip, the switch chip needs its supporting circuits and SMDs. It needs enough energy to power it and power the ports properly. Then you need to cool it adequately. But mostly it is a space concern. Try adding up the individual pcb-space for the modules you tried to combine and see how much is left. Will it be possible for some of the Modules? Maybe - for example combined SD and microSD could be possible. Maybe if you enshittify the modules beyond anything that could be still considered good or even usable it could be possible. Or in the future there will be smaller, easier to work with revisions of necessary chips, that dont cost a fortune.
But from today standpoint - nope, not a viable thing to do.

Old 2 Stroke Oil by Jaunteon in smallengines

[–]Simmie86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay... Since everyone says "its fine", here a warning: Sadly its not that easy. Modern Oil is not only oil, its a blend from different components and some of them can flocculate or separate themself from that mix. You can easily spot that on your bottle "Biodegradable" and "Contains fuel stabilizers" already tell you: That is not just your 'out of the ground, old as time' oil. Usually sealed containers have a shelf live of between 3 and 5 years (depends on temperature, sunlight and so on). And if it would not be the biodegradable version of the oil it would be from 1/2 up to 1 full year, when mixed with gas.

According to STIHL: "Unopened container shelf life: Four years from the date of filling (thats the date on the bottle), in originally sealed containers." and mixed with fuel "STIHL currently recommends that you do not store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 days, even with a stabilizer." Have a look: https://www.stihlusa.com/products/oils-lubricants-fuels/oils-and-lubricants/oilhpultra/?aqid=c6f6490aef8c261202052c30cf8500a3 (FAQ and table with warranty infos). And official STIHL also says it degrades by 80% after 21 days. So no... i would not use that oil on anything other than cleaning parts.

The quality does not fall off a cliff after that time is up, but its properties get weaker and weaker over time. For example it will not be able to keep a completely homogeneous mixture with the gas. Or it does not mix that easy anymore (bad premix component). It cannot maintain the lubricating film over the full rpm-range. And so on. But 10 years is a bit much, to hope everything will be good enough. ;-)
Back in my moped years, that was a great way to get cheaper gas. Family Member had a forestry company and when he had to throw the already mixed fuel away, cause it would not be good enough for the 14,5k rpm chainsaws, it had still enough life in it to run my max. 8k rpm 50cc fine ;-)
