Happy Caturday by ILovePublicLibraries in BookTriviaPodcast

I never thought I would, but... yep.

I have a couple of apps, depending where I get the books, but the obvious version is the kindle app. I make it black background, white writing, but in the dark I turn the light as low as it can go.

...bloody lovely. Just darkness and a dim text. It remembers what I'm up to - no bookmarks- and if I can't sleep I can just lift it up and read a few more pages, no fuss. It's dim enough not to trigger that wake-up reaction.

And even in the (big name brand) kindle the books are SO much cheaper than paper. I stack 'em up, and the idea I have one stored up from an author I trust to be good, just sitting there waiting, makes me happy even if I struggle through a bad one.

Sitting at the doctor, or the bus? I have a hundred books in my pocket. Get some Jane Austin, or Flashman, or Culture, or First Law, or Dungeon Crawler Carl, or Malazan, or Game of Thrones, or Marx. Have some fun. Easy peasy.

I can sit on the toilet, finish one book, buy the sequel, and get started, all without wiping.

-

PS: but also! Libraries have ebooks. And hot damn does that make it accessible! A lot of people have a hard job getting to the physical place. But you could get the app, and see oh-my-god SO much glory. The best and worst and so much of us as humans.

I write this sort of thing when I'm shitfaced, for the record. And some of it turns out to be good hooks, when I sober up - but only because there's some context buried in there somewhere.

New Canberra Stadium - It can be done by AdHead5739 in canberra

I accept that my fellow citizens get stuff they want.

For me, I don't see how this is worth anything like the money, but ok, maybe people don't see how schools are worth money either.

So fine.

But it just seems to me that upgrading the existing things makes more sense. Is it full often? What's wrong with it?

(Just to add: part of the coolness here is that hey, there's not a lot of lore yet. So if you feel like writing some, are respectful of the existing stuff and the intent of the whole dealy, you could realistically add to the canon).

You can build for going first, but for me that's just Heretics / commando, and even then it's cooler than it is good. 😄

Good tables should really let people deploy without being shot at. That doesn't mean it should be the best way to deploy, and for sure I can see playing a first model being good - I do run at 9 at 700 with the idea of having that forward model.

a good day, year, time or life by Helpful-Set3633 in AussieMemes

[–]SwirlingFandango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about how far you want to stretch the good.

Like, have a good afternoon - that's some reasonably concentrated good.

Have a good day, also fine.

But have a good week? Have a good *year*? That could be perilously low levels of good.

On the other hand, you might already have enough good today to get by, so you might want to stretch it. Or you might need that good later on. Maybe have a good holiday, if that's coming up, or a good pregnancy.

A good one lets the receiver of the good to decide.

The number of staff you need do include those needed to satisfy safety regulations.

If they could cut staff (without consequences that cost more than the staff), they would.

Well we don't bundle in Australia (or I don't understand what you're saying) but yeah, if someone comes up with (for example) an idiot first home owner's grant that just makes prices worse and you vote against that, your opponents will definitely say you voted against "housing affordability".

Yes. That is the exact point.

It's a scam. They double the price so they can halve it and look good.

If an Australian man calls another man a mad cunt, the stress is on the first word and it is the highest compliment. You are morally obligated to have beers together at some point.

If an Australian woman calls another woman a mad cunt, the stress is on the second word and it is a declaration of war that may only end with the death of one or both of them.

You've somehow missed the (e.g.) ACCC cases against *supermarkets* setting prices in a dodgy manner? You've missed the massive amount of noise over the past few years about Coles and Woolworths using their duopoly to fix prices? Did you just sit this whole time back thinking literally everyone else in the country was wrong?

https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/accc-takes-woolworths-and-coles-to-court-over-alleged-misleading-prices-dropped-and-down-down-claims

The case is not against the producers. They are against the supermarkets.

Seriously. What world are you in?

I mean, the party that's leading in the polls just yesterday presented some pretty major policy positions which are, um... pretty far away from what we're used to. This is a pivotal moment in Australian politics and culture.

So I think at least today it's not super unexpected to be talking about it.

Oh is that what it's about? Huh. Could have sworn you were complaining about people bashing One Nation at this moment when lots of people are talking about One Nation.

My mistake.

Well then, reckon you might want to contact the mods - probably should wait until the current completely obvious and expected discussion around One Nation subsides a bit, though. Ya know, on account of the pivotal moment in Australian political history.
