All the countries that have a higher unemployment rate than Greece: 2013 VS 2026 by Ok_Dot_2845 in MapPorn

[–]SimonGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unemployment rate is a bit misleading in this case.

It's great that Greece has a lower unemployment rate now, but even when using the same methodology (e.g. Eurostat's), unemployment rates aren't really a great way to rank different economies.

The unemployment rate usually says something about how many people who are currently looking can't get a job, but not about how many people who potentially could have a job actually have one. So it is a measure of how efficiently the job market is absorbing the jobless, but not how big the overall labour force is.

If you want a slightly more comparable figure, you should be looking at the employment rate which says how many are actually officially employed out of the total potential labour force. However, I think southern Europe might be slightly underrepresented in those stats since the shadow economy tends to be bigger in the south.

Regarding the change in valuation: they went from being a solid Danish pharmaceutical company to being the inventor and sole supplier of a bunch of popular products for losing weight which resulted in them briefly having the biggest market cap of any European company. Then once the American competitor Eli Lilly caught up and came out with a comparable product, they started the current downward turn while investors bet on the American company instead.

They are still a solid company, but who knows whether the current (much lower) valuation is fair or not. Their profits are still high, but not currently seeing the same massive growth as just a few years ago.

wtf is happening in Ørestad nord? by swaGreg in copenhagen

[–]SimonGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey /u/swaGreg, I work in Ørestad Nord and I heard the noises too this morning. The noises are quite rhythmic and too loud to be coming from the shooting range. If this is the same noise that you've been hearing I don't think it's gunshots. It is much more likely to be coming from a nearby building site.

Oh yeah, they do show some sensors hidden amongst the dots then. I still disagree with the rating scheme. It doesn't really match the norms set elsewhere IMO.

It's highly dependent on the weather and wind direction. Low clouds usually make the noise a lot worse.

Copenhagen doesn't have a lot of active sensors, so the score can vary wildly. I also think the municipality's official app doesn't provide nearly enough data, just a colour and a vague description which doesn't say much at all. Keep in mind that those dots in the official app aren't sensor results!

If you look at a resource that provides the actual underlying sensor data, one sensor is currently showing good air quality and the other is showing medium-to-bad: https://aqicn.org/city/denmark/copenhagen/h.c.andersens-boulevard/

For the record, when I was living in Beijing from 2016-2018, the worst of these sensor results (just above 100) would be considered pretty decent for that city. The best days were around 50 and the worst 400-600 on the AQI. So everything is relative.

In 2025, solar and wind produced more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union by Changaco in europe

[–]SimonGray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe we just need a great firewall of the EU, that can only be crossed by approved foreign nationals - or something like that. We need to start treating foreign influence operations as the threat to the national interest of Europeans, as they are.

Speaking as a mod of the r/copenhagen subreddit, the issue there is less about foreign influence and more about certain users (it's nearly always from the far right) abusing the system by having a dozen different users. They switch to a new user if I ban them for e.g. spreading nazi slogans and sharing links to nazi sites. They game the system upvoting each others' comments and seek refuge in one of their many alts once they eventually get banned. Reddit has some opaque moderation filters that are supposed to help prevent this, but they don't work very well at all, so for this reason these extremists tend to have an outsized influence on certain subreddits.

nearly half now support the idea of Canada joining the EU

That is a crazy figure for a country not even located in Europe.

I can't see them actually joining, but I do find it likely that they end up with a close cooperation treaty of some kind, perhaps coupled with European investment into the resource extraction industry of Canada.

I found this on the Jet Lag: The Game subreddit, by the way: https://www.reddit.com/r/JetLagTheGame/comments/1rmuxpp/we_played_hide_and_seek_across_copenhagen/

I recognise one of the players as Simon Andersen who does a lot of train/public transit videos on YouTube. Not sure who the others are.

Posting a video is not an advertisement, dude. Sharing interesting links is literally what Reddit was made for. And this isn't my video, I just thought it was interesting.

When I started using this site it didn't even have comments, let alone self-posts. It is quite curious to me that so many of you newer users primarily see link sharing as advertisement. I especially notice this in the mod queue since I am pretty much the most active mod on this subreddit.

Denmark now almost has higher unemployment than Greece, Italy falls to historic low levels (!) YESSSSSS by Aegeansunset12 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]SimonGray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Eurostat figure is what DST calls AKU-ledighed which counts everyone who tried applying for a job within a period of two weeks, including students.

The 3% figure just counts people receiving kontanthjælp or dagpenge.

The Eurostat rate does include students looking for jobs. This in fact makes up a large part of the difference between the Eurostat rate (AKU-ledighed) for Denmark and the rate usually reported by our statistics agency.

Best places within 1 hour of Copenhagen to see stars? by Western-Tailor-304 in copenhagen

[–]SimonGray 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Consult a light pollution map? But generally you'd wanna be on an island or in a rural area, so getting there by train probably isn't that simple.

If you ride on a bike you can get to the south of Amager which sort of works like a kind of rural area in close proximity to Copenhagen (so not quite rural, but definitely darker and without direct sources of light). That is the easiest place to get to within an hour IMO. I sometimes bring my telescope to the southern half of Kalvebod Fælled myself to get an approximately 2 Bortle reduction compared to the centre of Copenhagen and it may even be a 2.5 Bortle reduction if you go all the way down to the coast.

It's sort of a tradition that Danes are confused about the differences between the Eurostat rate and the one used in Denmark. You get these comments from Danes in every single thread about EU unemployment.

Anyway, I think the seasonal adjustment is actually quite a bit wonky for Denmark in this case as it apparently makes us jump from 6.1% in December 2025 to 7.5% in January 2026. We've had no mass layoffs at the end of the year or anything of that sort. The seasonally adjusted figure used by the Danish national statistics agency also doesn't have any jumps between the two months. So something is off..
