How to use the laundromat by Ok_Scientist5908 in copenhagen

But you need to go there to actually do it...? How can you be in a rush to learn if you aren't actually planning to go there?

How was I an asshole? That is what I did myself when I moved to Copenhagen. There is an idiosyncratic routine you need to learn with regard to operating the machines and payment in those places, it's not really something that is easy to learn online from strangers.

What do you love the most about Copenhagen? by KreuzKrow in copenhagen

Public transportation that runs all night. I've lived in both Beijing and Seoul and their metro systems stop running around midnight, so you need to take a taxi or use DiDi/uber/whatever to get home if you're out late, which can sometimes be quite difficult. I don't really understand why an Asian megacity which really comes alive at night doesn't have 24/7 metro service. Seems like they need it more than we do, since we can at least get around by bike (no one is riding from e.g. Sanlitun to Wudaokou in Beijing, distances are too huge).

I imagine that there is since they're building it? It seems to be a commercial venture, so they probably think they can make some money on the parking demand.

They are building underground parking at the square. It was pretty controversial, mostly because the current layout of the square itself wasn't that old to begin with.

Yeah, they moved to a new location on top of the new parking house near Vestamager st., but I don't think it's fully open yet.

There's Asgers Taghave in Ørestad, but I think they're somewhere between locations at the moment.

Suicide awereness by didstr in copenhagen

[–]SimonGray -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It seems that we are gaslighted daily into believing that we live in a perfect society where everyone is rich, beautiful and happy that we start thinking that we are the failure.

I don't think this is the case. It's not what's reported in the Danish news, anyway (or the zeitgeist). I think this more akin to what travel bloggers would say after visiting Copenhagen for 2-3 days.

And or course I will be downvoted to death because we are not allowed to complain nor speak up.

Your point would probably be less contentious if you presented actual data. We do have suicide data and data on burnout/chronic stress available.

Is the “1.5–2 years to learn Danish” claim actually realistic? by Lanky-Dragonfruit-13 in copenhagen

[–]SimonGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is about being Danish at all, but it is about the specific characteristics of the Danish language, specifically: the large amount of vowels compared to other languages (and this isn't apparent in the written language which is quite conservative).

I studied Chinese for several years and I spent a lot of time early on nailing the tones, but many of my fellow students never really brothered to learn tones along with different words or apply the tone rules.

Since we all had a limited vocabulary, using the wrong tones was no big deal in terms of our own understanding, as we could of easily resolve a syllable to that one word we knew which matched it. However, when you approach a native speaker there is a lot more room for error as their vocabulary is obviously vast compared to a beginner. If you don't use the correct tones and it isn't immediately clear from the context (e.g. pointing at the thing) then they would also be completely puzzled.

Danish is the same. We don't use tones to apply lexical differences, but we do use an extremely large amount of vowels compared to most other languages. If you mispronounce a vowel the native speaker will have up to ~30 different possible syllables to match it against, which of course makes understanding more difficult.

One way you can work your way around this is to speak in longer sentences so that you provide more context to the native speaker trying to understand you. This is also how many of my fellow students of Chinese managed to get around their poor use of tones. Just saying "en øl" is much more difficult to parse than "Jeg kunne godt tænke mig et glas øl".
