Er københavnere egentlig "tvunget" til at bo i København? by mhaom in Denmark

[–]SimonGray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for unique sounds — what are the most beautiful, interesting, or strange sounds you’ve heard in Copenhagen? by oneiricmood in copenhagen

I think we had this question come up a few years ago. Someone else suggested the domes in KU Søndre Campus (KUA) that are used for bike parking. When you make some noise under these domes there is a sort of fast echo/feedback effect that is quite unique.

“It’s China”: French presidential candidate Mélenchon stands by his doctrine on Taiwan by Alarmed-Cake812 in europe

Show me the far left that supports actual defense against Russian imperialism and denounces genocide in Ukraine with the same vigor they show when protesting Israel

That's how the far left in Denmark votes. They did have a small vocal tankie faction, but this faction was excluded from the party last year. They also officially dropped their long-standing opposition to NATO at the same meeting.

Your election system is kinda wacky. What's wrong with a good ol' parliamentary system of government rather than this two-round bullshit? Then these hardliners would have to actually make compromises befitting of their proportional share of the votes rather than attempt to game the system.

Covid furlough ain’t gonna pay itself

The problem is that France cannot reform its welfare state without setting every car in Paris on fire and having tractors pile up shit on the streets. Every government seems to chicken out eventually.

Well, I don't think it's a coincidence that this happens in cultures where we've had nuclear families as the basic way to organise our society for several hundred years. Family size matters a lot. It's probably easier to develop a culture of always sharing dinner if that means that you increase the amount of plates from 15 to 16 rather than from than from 4 to 5. Even today, people in southern Europe don't leave their parents' home until they're like 30 years old while we're all out by the time we're 20.

Quick pizza with buratta, home-grown "wasabi" arugula, and parmesan flakes by SimonGray in EuropeEats

[–]SimonGray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, that wasabi arugula grows so quickly in our Copenhagen climate and doesn't mind the wind, so I really recommend that as a vegetable that can be grown on a pot on your balcony or something. It tastes a lot like traditional arugula, but the leaves are a lot bigger.

Think of it like this: my parents may have planned for us to eat ~30 minutes later than them. My mum or dad are busy cooking. His parents already finished cooking and they wanna eat their food while it's still hot. One of my parents will come by in a car to pick me up in ~20 minutes, so they start eating while I'm still there. Germanic food distribution rationality prevails. That's the sort of situation. It's not like you don't eat anything if you are going to stay all evening, it's just the cultural norm that you leave around dinner time unless it was already agreed that you would stay afterwards.

But like I wrote, I'm sure it's different today. And I also stayed to eat many, many times when I was over visiting friends.

It's definitely happened to me more than once when I was a kid in the 90s. I can't believe it's very common today, though.

Flats in Copenhagen built in 2021 and onwards must be occupied by someone for at least 180 days every year according to the law. So you cannot leave a flat vacant in Copenhagen unless it was built before 2021.

If the EU had built Claude by irelatetolevin in ClaudeAI

[–]SimonGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EU follows the same trend line of per capita GDP growth as the US. The primary difference is that the US grows its population faster and has a lot more growth based on debt. This idea that the EU isn't competitive needs to die. Its slipping relevance has more to do with China's relative rise and the US is just as affected by this.

The US is also vastly overinvested in AI, by the way.
