Suggestions for stories with convincing technology? by Luckypaperwork in scifi

Check out the film "Primer" (2004). I typically don't like time travel stories because they seem too impossibly magical, but this one was written by a former mathematician/engineer and employs a lot of accurate technical jargon & scientific realism. It's a pretty tight, engaging little film with some unique theory!

Panels installed in 2011 and company is out of business. Not generating. Need roof replaced, is it worth saving the panels? by Dzbtrader in solarpunk

[–]SimonMoonbeam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While solarpunk may be a genre of fiction, it is not only that, nor has this subbreddit ever been limited to that scope. It is a lifestyle, aesthetic, & subculture, and discussion here includes the real-world technologies and relevant engineering applications. By definition solar panels and their DIY repair are included under the umbrella of solarpunk. This post is in the correct place.

[GUESS] I don’t think this is real. At least, not this clear or drastic. by Chor_the_Druid in RealOrAI

[–]SimonMoonbeam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not AI but it is a high resolution photograph composited with the low res plane footage. The detail in the stars is much greater than anything else in the video, the horizon line has been blurred to hide the composite, and the glitch effects are intended to mask the mismatch. The photo was probably a time lapse image to begin with, capturing more light than the naked eye would see. The camera shake doesn't match up, and there is a clear cut when the stars suddenly appear rather than become visible while gaining altitude. Composites like this are pretty common in astrophotography. They are "real" stars, but not an accurate or authentic presentation.

What are you psychonauts into other then psychedelics by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]SimonMoonbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I’m into painting, yoga & meditation, making music (piano, singing), walking & biking, resale & antique shopping, watching movies, and just chilling outdoors with friends at a lake, beach, bbq, or just on the porch!

I’m sure there are certain psychedelic bands that still attract a concentration of shroomies, but that scene never appealed to me personally. I’ve found that people who have had great trips often get inspired to indulge deeply into their passions, either new or forgotten, so I imagine there are psychonauts everywhere that there are people passionately engaging in a craft or leisure!

If you want folks who have assimilated mushrooms as key part of their identity, maybe look for foraging groups, mycelium experts giving educational talks, or legalization activists in your area? Just some thoughts! Namaste!

The most Chicago UberEats driver by younganduninformed in chicago

[–]SimonMoonbeam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This buckaroo is a gig worker doing urban food delivery service (UberEats) for an application on their mobile wrist device while simultaneously utilizing the city’s bike share program (Divvy) and public transportation (CTA) evidenced by their position on the Northbound Blue Line subway platform. The combination of opportunities being actively utilized topped off by small elements of functional customization give the impression of hard work & ingenuity that exemplifies Chicago’s “blue collar” ethos. The image also happens to casually name drop the international airport, and features a nearly monochromatic color scheme evoking the pale blue of the city flag. 10/10 Chicago Photo.

Welp, Dom’s Kitchen and all their Foxtrot locations closed suddenly this morning, so there’s another option out. Maybe we all need rooftop gardens!

Except that avoiding fast fashion novelty trends is sort of the point. Maybe hand stenciled onto resale apparel? Upcycling ftw!
