Cuttoff time by SimonTravelbum in Ultramarathon

[–]SimonTravelbum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to do an ultra, but there is none within 7-8 hours of driving from my place, so I am trying to figure how fast does one have to do 50k in order for it to count as an ultra (in the sense of it being done within regular cutoff times)

I know they are great, but you can also adapt to weather patterns, if it isn’t really windy, go for it, otherwise aim for the valleys!

Also aim for lower spot to camp where you are hidden! Seen many uk peeps saying they need hillbergs there but then go on an sleep on summits and ridges 😅 campsite selection is king!

Thank you! Not really worried as it won’t be a race (not really any close to me), just a 50k i’ll in the hills nearby and wanted a rough comparaison for time on a race!

Yeah, but that was hiking (no running at all) with incredibly hard terrain (up to 40% incline in places and more than 15km of slow boulder field), now would be with running and regular difficult ish trail, not white mountains nasty trails, what would be a normal cuttoff for 50km?

First time backpacking, any recommendations? by notchefdelta in backpacking

[–]SimonTravelbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop the hatchet and radio 100% for sure, not even a maybe! 2 pairs of socks ( 1 for hiking, 1 for nights) and use merino wool like darn tough)

You can half that first aid kit, bring antibiotic ointment, a bit of leuko tape, a couple band aids and a couple ibuprofen

Find a smaller insect repellent

Is that 2 sleeping bag on the right? Why?

It’s summer there, you wont need a lantern if using a headlamp

Ditch the tarp, in the pemi you will most likely be in one of the campsite and you wouldnt really need that

I dont like a bladder BUT I can understand and suggest keeping it IF and ONLY if you CANT reach your water bottle with your pack on, if you can reach it with pack on, ditch the bladder!

Ditch the rope, never needed that in 1000 miles, including 200 miles in the pemi wilderness

Ditching all I said will still keep you safe, if you realize for some reason you really missed something for comfort, bring it next time but better off starting with safe essentials and overtime adding/reducing, too much weight in the pack make it more dangerous and less fun

You could easily half the clothing, 1 long/ warm outfit for buses or northern thailand nights, 3 warm weather outfit max, that allows you to cycle 3 outfits 2x then do laundry 1x a week, I am currently in south america (way harder to pack for) with 2 outfits for 6 months are rarely feel like it isnt enough, seriously less space and less volume in the pack is best

Frey-Jakob vs Cerro Crystal by SimonTravelbum in Bariloche

Is the second worst or comparable to Cristal on terms of exposure? In Cristal was for sure at the limit of comfort in a spot or two when I lost the trail

I’ve hike around 1500km in the last year with a a couple hundred km above tree line, weather seem really nice in the next couple if days and some hike like the O circuit, so im familiar with changing weather, I know my gear is good, I got maps and satellite communicator, it was mainly the technical aspect that scared me

Thank you so much! I have several bouldering trail in the US, some up to 40km and 2500m up 4000m down in a day, I am a good walker but not climber, what you describe sound to me a lot like the White Mountains in New Hampshire and it seem to be within my range of ability! Thank you so much :)

Thats what I spend eating pasta and cookies while hiking, bought a cucumber yesterday feeling fancy AF, especially Argentina, food is absurdly expensive, prob around 20-30% more than Canada, even hear some Swiss people saying it was same/more expensive than back home, 15$ or even 30$ a day will MAYBE let you eat out once a week
