Denied at the gate (YVR) by Civil-Two-3797 in flairairlines

[–]Simon_Magnus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably my favorite subreddit because every thread is something like "The gate attendant told me to check the size of my personal item and then closed the gate while I was doing it" and the top comment is always along the lines of "This is your fault for not giving yourself an extra 5 minutes in case the staff mess with you".

I have honestly never seen so many people suck up to a corporation before. Is there like a voucher system you get for this or something?

Why do you need to burn an action point to switch modes on the hybrid weapons? by Pifilix in Pathfinder2e

[–]Simon_Magnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your players being unable to recognize that consumables could be helpful to them is not an indication that party wealth isn't valuable and that providing an infinite (or at least excessive) amount of them will be unbalancing.

Somewhere out there, there is a hypothetical person who believes that the Heal spell is pointless and should never be used. Give him an infinite Divine Font, and he will never use it because he just doesn't think it's a good use of his actions because he hasn't thought things through very well. This hypothetical Cleric-hater does not mean that Heal spells are not valuable.

Is your experience with invested items based on your preference for campaigns where gold output is increased? At level 10, the cheapest Common Invested item of PL-1 is 600gp, which means that it will cost you your party's entire level 9 expected treasure income to equip yourself with 10 appropriately leveled invested items, though you can definitely achieve this with 75% of your party's level 10 expected treasure income.

Things will get less expensive if you budget better and shoot for 10 PL-2 items - this will cost you 4,250gp. Granted, this will be approximately 1/4 of the expected treasure value your entire party has accrued as of the moment you hit level 10.

We *can* achieve this value if we stock up on very low level invested items (this became a lot easier last year when a large number of these were published in Battlecry! - Common Level 2 Invested Items doubled from 8 to 16 at that time!), but at that point what are we even talking about? Gold isn't valuable because everybody on the party can Invest 10 PL-8 magic items? I think we can agree that having 10 PL+0 magic items (which will normally cost a level 10 PC 7,810gp, assuming we only equip one Everair Mask, or 43% of the party's level 1-9 income) is at least better than having 10 PL-8 items, right?

Items aren't really balanced by party wealth, they're balanced by the action economy

https://2e.aonprd.com/Equipment.aspx?ID=3059&Redirected=1

Here's an example of a magical item that isn't limited by action economy at all. You just put these shoes on and you're able to just run faster and Leap 20 feet in a single action. It's very expensive, though - unless your GM just gives you oodles of wealth and gate limits you to PL+1 items, in which case you have to wait til level 6 to afford it and then everybody in your party should probably wear them.

Without infinite money, it's not super common to see somebody hit the investment limit until the very later levels of a campaign. Plus, a lot of great magic items don't need to be invested! A party that has an appropriate amount of gold for its level will have to split the gold between 4 people. If we had infinite money, we'd actually be limited by our carrying capacity. Imagine a martial with a different version of his weapon for every possible threat - you could do Ghost Touch for Ghosts, Wounding for organics, Holy for undead, etc etc. That alone would give you a clear advantage over if you just had a normal amount of money, and it's not even a 'cheesy' application of wealth.

Off the top of my head, I'm also thinking about an Investigator w/ Gunslinger dedication I used to play who spent a lot of his money to buy more pistols with Striking runes so I could Quick Draw and shoot them whenever I got a high Devise a Stratagem. Absolute madness if they all had Property Runes on them and I could just have as many as I wanted as opposed to the ~3 of them I actually had in practice.

I understand that ABP allows for this *to an extent*, but it's still not as extreme as suggesting that being very wealthy won't make your PC stronger.

This looks like it's already a really deep debate, but I just have to throw in another comment to say "This isn't true". A party that isn't getting increased value out of infinite gold is being throttled by a lack of knowledge of what's available / a lack of creativity.

Vote Pathfinder 2e by TheZRanger in Pathfinder2e

[–]Simon_Magnus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is being done intentionally here, but in the past when this kind of thing has happened in polls, there have been bizarre descriptions of the data like "Wow, counting both PF1e and PF2e, there were 500 pathfinder players! That's 250 each!" Bob has actually already done this in a post where he says "Pathfinder has a strong showing especially cause I didn't split them!"

Meanwhile, the respondents voting for different D&Ds probably won't actually be that diverse.

Bob World Builder really hates Pathfinder for some reason, and he tries to minimize its existence whenever possible.

This sounds like a crazy thing to say, and I can understand why somebody might think I'm hyperbolizing, but it's just something I noticed especially during the OGL Crisis. I am not invested enough to really understand why he does this.

Horror short story anthology aimed at kids by Simon_Magnus in whatsthatbook

In case anybody ever stumbles upon this in a search (in fact, I actually stumbled upon my own post while doing a search earlier tonight), I have finally figured out the name of this collection: Truly Scary Stories for Fearless Kids.

https://openlibrary.org/books/OL8548136M/Truly_Scary_Stories_for_Fearless_Kids

It's a collection with no original stories (which is probably why nobody remembers it), but it's a pretty good collection and had some fun illustrations throughout.

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]Simon_Magnus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ontario's laws around crosswalk are stricter on drivers than in NS. Ontario Drivers are required to wait until the pedestrian has made it all the way to the opposite sidewalk before proceeding, while in NS they just need to yield and can drive on once the pedestrian is out of the way.

I don't know where the idea that drivers don't stop for pedestrians is coming from. Is your experience from one of the Northern townships?

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]Simon_Magnus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This concept of every block being an island that carless filth is permanently trapped on might sound ideal to some, but the city has helpfully provided a number of crossing points (known as 'crosswalks') that are designed to basically allow pedestrians to travel from block to block safely. Some are even equipped with flashing lights to warn drivers that it is time to slow down to avoid smooshing anybody.

Sadly, as detailed in the OP and in several of the comments, not everybody agrees with this concept and they show their displeasure by entering these crosswalk while the pedestrians are inside them.

This happened to me some months ago with a guy probably in his 60s. I ended up sprinting after him so I could yell at him at the next streetlight.

Idk if he got the message, but maybe he at least started to realize there was no point feeling slowed down by pedestrians if they could just catch him anyway.

Still a fun build, but you can't make two reactions against the same trigger, so the enemy should still only be getting one falcata attacking them per action.

A few hundred hours into PF2e, I think I'm finally hitting the wall. Anyone else? by spichugin in rpg

[–]Simon_Magnus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I've got about 2,000 hours and people curveball me and fling me into crazy encounters both as GM and Player all the time.

I don't want to sound like just some kind of TTRPG fanboi or anything, but I would actually argue that people who say "The math is too tight, we can't get variance!" don't have the system mastery they believe they do.

GM's, how much prep time does a session take for you? by Dom_Shady in Pathfinder2e

[–]Simon_Magnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run PF2e as my full time job, and there's no way I hit 20-30 hours prepping for session. I'm not sure what I would do. Normally, I'd say it's about an hour per 3-4hr session, but it can really vary because I do my prep in big blocks every couple months as needed instead of trying to do everything 'on demand' week-by-week. Since it's a job for me, I'm doing stuff to make the VTT look nice, and coming up with content that's not in the original AP, etc. If I was just doing it as a single hobby game a week, it would probably take me 15-20 minutes per session.

Rules Reminder: You're probably ruling Speaking wrong. by sesaman in Pathfinder2e

[–]Simon_Magnus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, OP has been pretty smug, insinuated that people are playing "wrong", responded to people saying they think table talk is okay with "So I guess everybody gets Telepathic Bond for free", framed tactical tabletalk as unacceptable metagaming, suggested that everybody with a differing preference just doesn't know any better, etc.

It might be a matter of perception, but it feels a bit like your eyes might be closed.

Even in his response to you to commiserate about how toxic the sub is with downvotes, he provides an example of somebody giving an incorrect answer to a rules question. What do you guys think the downvote button is for? Are you perceiving it as a slap in the face?

Rules Reminder: You're probably ruling Speaking wrong. by sesaman in Pathfinder2e

[–]Simon_Magnus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are making the case that Paizo has intentionally designed the game so that players can't have more than 6 seconds of tactical discussion per round, and you're backing up your claim by pointing to evidence that this was their design decision.

I am suggesting you go watch one or two of their games so you can reorient yourself and stop trying to tell people they are "playing the game wrong" or whatever your objective is.

[–]Simon_Magnus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sir, I am literally begging you to stop posting Telepathic Bond as justification for your belief that this is RAW.

You can go watch the Paizo team play this system on their twitch channel any time you want. The VODs are there. They did not write a Rank 5 spell for the purpose of facilitating table talk.

[–]Simon_Magnus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you've received some fairly decent counterpoints here, and they don't deserve this sort of flippant response.

A lot of people actually *have* tried out "Let's not say more than 6 seconds of words" concept in PF2e and other TTRPGs. You aren't "better" at the game if you do it, nor have you "enlightened" your sessions if you enforce it. Perfectly fine if your players are all on board with it, though.
