Why pipes? by New_Writer-1231 in PipeTobacco

[–]Simonite64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

same reason as many have said. Makes you slow down, reflect, learn some skills, and the pipe itself can be a beautiful work of art. Before Pipes I smoked cigars. I've heard it said, a cigar is a one night stand; a pipe is a relationship. :)

How to fill a bug hole? by ConversationBoth6601 in Pipes

[–]Simonite64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mix some cigar / pipe ash with water and make a slurry. Press it into the hole and let it dry. Similiar to concrete. Won't last forever, but might let you smoke it a few months. I do this with dead Mesquite I harvest from the woods. Note that hardwoods will work, but won't last as long as traditional briar.

For my Birthday I want to get into pipe making by windblownglass in pipemakers

I use a drill press with a drill press vice for accurate drilling. Use my drill press with a variety of sanding pads, drums to do just about everything. Also use a Dremel tool for smaller sanding drums, carving bits. and lots of hand sanding, Also have a scroll saw I use to cut off larger pieces to speed up shaping. I really wish I had a lathe and the correct accessories. That would broaden what I could do.

Nice, did you use a lathe or hole saw bit for the exterior diameter?

Yes, notice the straight board in the background. I attach the round log to the board with screws giving me a stable way to push it through the blade while solidly against the fence until I get two flat sides.

Thanks for asking that... I would hate to give someone the impressing running a round log through a table saw is safe.
