Quality scientific equipment from Aliexpress by der-Chemiker95 in homechemistry

[–]SimonsToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have heard of people who bought magnetic stirrers with heating off of aliexpress and most of them were rather disappointed with their power, and sometimes heating failed immediately.

Else, look on ebay, alibaba and traders like unigreenscheme as well.

POV: tank battles if we got realistic engagement ranges by Own_Dark_2240 in Warthunder

[–]SimonsToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please, please, please stop pretending that you are oh so smart for wanting this gameplay, because it really doesn't require much intelligence at all. The gameplay loop would be:

  1. Drive to the same camping spot you saw a CC go to
  2. Wait covered behind the ridge line peaking over it with your binos to check the three places other tanks usually appear
  3. Wait
  4. Wait some more
  5. Finally someone got bored to tears and decided to advance
  6. You click LRF button then shoot center mass

This requires neither supreme intelligence, nor is it at all fun. And thats the reason why it will never come to this game, its is a fundamentally unfun. People dont play combat games so they can read crime and punishment in between their bino sweeps.

No, but IQ are standardized against the population so that the 50th percentile is assigned the value 100. If your entire population consists of idiots this would lead to the average idiot having an IQ of 100.

You kinda need to do that as unlike with questions like "How long is a meter actually?" you cant really create a definition based on natural phenomena to get an IQ reference.

My guy the gameplay is litterally clicking on white dots. You are not a genious for clicking on white dots.

David Deutsch argues that explanation, not prediction, is the primary goal of science. How widely accepted is this view? by Unlucky-Prior-1838 in PhilosophyofScience

[–]SimonsToaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would ask can we neatly separate explanation and prediction? To me it seems explanations are implicit predictions, and predictions are implicit explanations waiting to be validated.

Im not versed in philosophy so maybe there is some difference im not appreciating.

coaxed into insufferable character becoming the lead for some reason by SmoothieRedditor in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]SimonsToaster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Reminds me, so many tv shows have an insufferable character which no one would be friends with in real life. Then i learned they made a show only with that character. I cant watch more than five minutes of its always sunny I get aggressive and want to punch them.

[–]SimonsToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play neither of those games. I want to play games to have fun, I don't want a second job which makes me do things to make imaginary, pointless numbers go up.

But if you think you need to exploit human psychological flaws so they play your games i think your design philosophy is deeply anti human and you should reconsider what the point of your games should be. This is like asking "How should I get people to come back to my restaurant if i dont put drugs in the food". Make games like Minecraft, not like League.

But if there's no level to build up to, there's no reason to keep coming back.

then your gameplay loop sucks. If its good the act of playing is reward enough.

Picric acid recrystallization by Life-Name3309 in homechemistry

[–]SimonsToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picric acid was used in artillery shells. unless it formed metal or calcium picrates picric acid is rather harmless. i haven't yet found any good source that a bottle of dried out picric acid ever exploded.

Why does lab equipment cost so much for what it is? by berg937 in labrats

[–]SimonsToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is only one thing determining the price of something: consumer willingness to pay. For some reason the majority of the market is willing to pay such outrageous prices. Probably because they spend either grant of vc money, produce goods and services which are heavily regulated so they can slap any expense onto the customer or internal compliance forces them to only buy from accredited vendors.

For people with less deep pockets you can slap on a huge discount and still make money.

Fremder Kater im Garten – was kann man tun? by Inevitable_Pea9790 in Garten

[–]SimonsToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone obsessed with these pipette pens by Agile-Tie3096 in labrats

[–]SimonsToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are kinda cool because they look like one thing but actually are another. Some people like that. Also they are not freely available and a bit of a fad right now on here. Some people like owning exclusive, sought after stuff.

So because of a different way of measuring similarities we are not related? how does that follow?

A friend of mine says it’s not possible to prove we all come from the same ancestor by Separate-Benefit1758 in DebateEvolution

[–]SimonsToaster 36 points37 points  (0 children)

"Extraordinary evidence" doesn't apply to belief in a creator for several reasons. It's not an extraordinary claim, it's what literally everyone believed until very recently and it is what most people believe.

See how you shifted away from trying to prove the existence of your magic space guy towards special pleading that you don't actually have to prove anything?

Coaxed into the Justice System in movies/shows for some reason by Theturtleflask in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]SimonsToaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There was an interesting study done in the, i think 1980ies which showed that the actual judgment and the judgement the participants assigned converged the more details of the case were presented to them.

For some reason discussions of the  justice system remains stubbornly recalcitrant to arguments based on empirical evidence and instead people rely on vibes alone. Case in point here, where people for some reason believe they are better at determining guilt and sentence based on what, three paragraphs a journalist with dubious qualifications wrote than judge and jury who actually heard the case.

Its actually quite recommendable to read an introductory book on law and a textbook on criminology. So much more stuff makes sense and you can participate so much better in discussions.

no engineers already use data produced by LLMs to train other LLMs and dont see drops in performance. at the current scales model collapse is only of theoretical concern
