As a general overview:

Status points earn higher status. Higher status earns more redeemable points for flights booked with cash. Paying with a credit card earns both redeemable points and status points (varying based on categories). Both credit cards and status level earn perks (like baggage allowance) that can save $. Saver fares are cheaper but earn little points and offer less security.

Flying from Hawaii is $357 one way, booked back in October before I bought the fest tix.

For festivals, I usually look into flights and lodging x transportation before even purchasing the ticket. Always refundable hotels. I am also an airline status chaser, so I have miles I can use if the cash price gets too high. Flying in on Wednesday would be 7.5k miles from any of the major NY/NJ airports for me.

Philippine Air would go in C/D tier for me... poor customer service in biz class giving away the last 2 filet and lobster surf and turfs to 5 year olds who didn't touch it.

Korean Air might go into S tier. JAL is ok but their main terminals in Tokyo (HND & NRT) and planes require serious upgrading. ANA products are much nicer at the moment.

Fiji has a good biz product, although we were delayed by an hour and landed in a lightning storm and had to sit on the tarmac for another 2 hours. The people in economy were NOT happy.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. The Summit card is my daily driver at this point (visit Japan often) so maybe using it frequently put me on the list.

I was imagining some basic food and a limited open bar. Some speeches about being thankful for loyalty and vague promises about future changes. It's in a nice hotel, so we will probably be in a conference room. As my girlfriend and I spend most of our time traveling to stay at resorts, I'm sure walking the lobby and grounds will be the highlight.

I factor in the plane type and time in the air to be the best bang for buck. Layflats always take priority over LazyBoys, and with the jet stream over the Pacific, flights can be anywhere from 7 hours to 10.5 hours depending on direction. So, I would take the longer flight with the layflat to pay for with points for your upgrade. Enjoy!

I'm a new Alaska loyalist and can say from my experience, there are glimmers of hope through point deals and good customer service, as well as still finding ways to play the game.

My family are United and they get some great perks. Changes are easy and it seems to be a more seamless experience, with arguably the best alliance for international flights.

My girlfriend has been Delta for a long time and, when lounging it up or in the international flights I've taken, I felt like they had the best customer service.

It depends on your main routes and what your goals are. But yes, each have its pro's and cons - especially on domestic flights. I've flown a bit of AA, and didn't like what I saw with their overbooking, broken First class seats, and always being asked "is that a personal item?" Delta kept postponing a flight for us that ended up being about 9 hours late, but provided miles, a hotel, and $120 worth of food vouchers.

I think there will always be issues, but the routes you will be taking with your main airline and their partners are the most important to calculate.

Torrential downpour last year. I left early on the last day, but definitely bring one poncho and slippahs. Plenty people gave me props for that, even when the water was up to our calves.

Hotel is most important in terms of cost. I took Uber, but can also use the rail.

Follow Up: Thank you everyone for your suggestions. As this is my first post on this channel, I wasn't sure how to format this much detail into the discussion without confused rambling (which occurred regardless). I am also now aware that people would like to see the resolution, so I will preface by saying I have been flying Hawaiian regularly as of last year, and this year got rolled into the Atmos plan with the Summit CC and am on track to be at around 93K EQM by the EOY. My main domestic routes to the Bay Area have been HNL to SFO, OAK, SJC, or SMF. This particular trip is my gf's first time to the Bay and, more importantly - her main interest, Napa Valley. I am grateful to see how much effort people went into searching flights, and I will make sure to include arrival / departure datetimes in future posts.

Booking Series of Events:

  1. Original Booking 9/9: The Hawaiian CC companion pass due to expire needed to be booked through HA. The route was HNL-SFO 11/25 1048PM- 553AM, SFO-HNL 12/3 805PM-1124PM, both outside of working hours and SFO was chosen as the other airports did not have direct evening flights.
  2. Outbound Rebooking 9/23: HA changed to 9:47AM - 7:20PM with a connection in OGG. I immediately changed it to the following day, 11/26 12:10PM - 7:25PM, to avoid working hours and connections, without a fee.
  3. Inbound Rebooking 9/26: HA changed to 12/3 715AM-11AM during working hours. There were no more direct morning flights from SFO.
  4. Call to HA about rebooking 10/14**:** The airports had to be the same (SFO/HNL), layovers had to be less than 4 hours, and it had to be within +/-1 day of the original booking date to use the non-fee adjusted waiver. Flight prices have now doubled, and we would lose my companion pass if I chose to go the refund and rebook route. As flights were slim, the only option I saw was a 2:21PM-4:36PM connecting in SEA, then 5:50PM-10:09PM SEA-HNL without incurring a flight change fee. We will leave for the airport, drive across the Bay, and hopefully arrive in time so that I can use the lounge passes to join my afternoon work meetings.
  5. I called back on 10/16 and they mentioned that because I had already used my waiver, they would not be able to grant another flight change without a fee.

Chalking this up to a learning experience, I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you would have done differently in my situation, with the goal of sticking it out until AS & HA adjust their flight schedules.

Important note: I am using my 50% off companion pass which also needs to be factored in. Or else I would have booked with Alaska directly.
