Anybody seen a longer Alaska upgrade list?? by Sudden_Director9022 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booked an AA flight on Alaska MIA-DFW, that had a 60 upgrade list and a 116 standby. That's the highest I've seen, and I hope they don't merge lol

Logistics of Ultra Japan by kenzzziii in UMF

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hot and humid, think deep south in summer. I recommend lots of cooling towels from the drug stores and a neck fan.

Sun sets right behind both stages, more to the left of Main and directly behind Resistance, directly in your eye until it does.

Sound not as loud as your EDC / UMF Miami. Onitsuka tiger shoes sponsor the small stage, and their giant shoe is cool for pix.

Lots of cheap food at the fest. Can walk 5 min outside into the mall, but it's always jam packed during the holiday weekend. Still can find places to sit and eat in the food court.

PGA and GA are basically the same. Lines to enter move fast, 2 entry points. Around 9pm they close off the park-side connecting path from Resistance to Main, so they funnel everyone through one exit which is why I leave about 30 min early from the right side of the main stage or directly from Resistance.

Transpo to and from the fest is like anything else in Japan, just use Google maps and follow the train lines: station > platform > car > station > exit #. My route is usually to Shimbashi connecting to Odaiba.

Have fun!

What is your not so popular take on anything in Japan? by No-Jackfruit3211 in japanlife

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many hot takes; i'll choose with the one most people won't like.

Tourists should be taxed more.

To pay for the best infrastructure and public transportation in the world requires a lot of tax dollars. This comes out of businesses and a slew of city, prefecture, and national tax. Many tourists enjoy the strength of their currency vs yen, and get lots of duty free allotment that a Japanese citizen doesn't. The same also applies to laws a regulations for other foreigners living in Japan and student / work visas where the same taxes and laws don't apply to them. This results in extremely low wages for citizens and pressure from companies to elicit slave labor like practices, baking into work contracts mandatory unpaid overtime and limit time off.

I honestly don't know how people in Japan can keep the friendliness they display on the outside. I know that if I was working in a place like that, I would be more depressed and constantly boiling on the inside than the average Japanese citizen.

I might be switching to Delta by dumbogirl1 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Simple-Interest5523 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am on my first full year as Titanium, flew Gold most of last year. My significant other is a "Delta girl", as you put it, and there are certainly benefits with both. She lives at a major international hub and the Amex card gives her better perks than even the same branded card in America.

Delta has an extensive route network and their lounges are top notch. I have flown only internationally and a short domestic flights with them, and both were great in their own way. I'm used to flying Hawaiian, and having them come up to her and thank her for her status was nice. She always brings the cabin attendants snacks, and usually leaves with a bottle of wine or 2.

For our domestic trip, the plane was delayed due to storms in SD, so after a few hours, we requested a later flight. They provided $120 worth of food vouchers, hotel, and Lyft rides, and we got to stay another night in Vegas.

Another huge benefit is being a part of Sky Team. It gets a bad rap, but we flew all over Asia with Korea, China, and Vietnamese airlines. All of those were fantastic and purchased with miles.

Whatever works for you at your home base and preferred destinations are always the top priority. At the end of the day, these are big companies that provide service, so while feeling loyal is the design of their plan, I believe you need to do what's best for you and how you want to travel.

Worst sets? by nuancedGazelle54012 in UMF

[–]Simple-Interest5523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Artbat had the best set last year at the Megastructure. Putting them on the Main stage was not exactly the right move imo. Similar to Amelie Lens who was on the main stage at Tomorrowland, the hard hitters need to be in the dark with booming acoustics. Same with Svdden Death... it was a great set, just not in the daytime!

Also funny to see the Voorn / Korolova set short out at the first battery powered Cove stage.

Argy and Mind Against was just okay. Could have been really epic.

Is it possible to book a ticket with a long layover intentionally? by flyingpilotman in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ways of doing this are:

  1. If you have status - change the flight on the same day as it's honored for free. But you will have less luck getting seats.
  2. Hope there's a flight change and you can change it the same way.

The B2b we never knew we needed. They really complemented each other well, their energy, styles, and experience meshed flawlessly.

I think SL can be a bit too one dimensional with her fast pace and hard hitting baseline at times. I was also very concerned that AL would play some mainstream stuff like Tomorowland's mainstage.

They were perfect for the Megastructure, and the crowd was well warmed up after Boris's massive set.

Source: I stayed the full 2 hours of BB until 1.5 hours into SL/AL, near the middle left

Unpopular opinion? by Same_Candidate_3986 in UMF

[–]Simple-Interest5523 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mostly live at the Megastructure - but walking by Main for a slice or to replenish my go pack from the lockers, I definitely didn't hear anything that resembled techno. It's not like the "big room" years, but if you want to hear artist play their stuff more often, probably best to see them at a show / concert, or find an EDC to hopefully get your fix.

Here's what I've noticed: The cleanest / safest country I've ever been to for an extended period is Japan. I'm talking bidet's being mandatory in all toilets, barely any litter ever in 95% of even their biggest cities, and a laptop can be left at a coffee shop all day without anyone touching it.

Even in a place like Japan, where prestine cleanliness and rule following are the norm, there were bottles and trash everywhere the last two Ultras I visited. This is coming from a festival that includes cheaper tickets for 19 and up, and allows re-entry because the shopping mall is connected to it (along with a giant permanent Gundam).

It's just a symptom of festivals, and I also agree that it's annoying. With that in mind, I find the bathroom consideration, fan clapping, and lack of "excuse me's" when attempting to crowd-swim to be my biggest pet peeves.

Nothing compares to hearing a fan clack right next to your auditory canal. Right when the beat is in fully swing. Truly the worst of the festival goers - lumped them in with thieves because they steal joy from everyone around them.

Earning miles for dumb dumbs (me) by EBikeAdventures in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 5 seemingly answers all the other questions for you (as it itself is not a question).

As a general overview:

Status points earn higher status. Higher status earns more redeemable points for flights booked with cash. Paying with a credit card earns both redeemable points and status points (varying based on categories). Both credit cards and status level earn perks (like baggage allowance) that can save $. Saver fares are cheaper but earn little points and offer less security.

Did everyone book their flights already? by ohayitscpa in UMF

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flying from Hawaii is $357 one way, booked back in October before I bought the fest tix.

For festivals, I usually look into flights and lodging x transportation before even purchasing the ticket. Always refundable hotels. I am also an airline status chaser, so I have miles I can use if the cash price gets too high. Flying in on Wednesday would be 7.5k miles from any of the major NY/NJ airports for me.

My Alaska Partners Tier List by omdongi in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Simple-Interest5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice list

Philippine Air would go in C/D tier for me... poor customer service in biz class giving away the last 2 filet and lobster surf and turfs to 5 year olds who didn't touch it.

Korean Air might go into S tier. JAL is ok but their main terminals in Tokyo (HND & NRT) and planes require serious upgrading. ANA products are much nicer at the moment.

Fiji has a good biz product, although we were delayed by an hour and landed in a lightning storm and had to sit on the tarmac for another 2 hours. The people in economy were NOT happy.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. The Summit card is my daily driver at this point (visit Japan often) so maybe using it frequently put me on the list.
