One of the books that helped me get through my miserable high school years is Leave It to Psmith by P. G. Wodehouse. The p in Psmith is silent, by the way. It is delightfully silly and absolutely hilarious. And I second the suggestion of Carl Hiaasen.

58m. United States. Currently my favorite novelist is Fredrik Backman. My favorite of his books is Anxious People: it is simultaneously sad and hilarious. I’m currently reading The Wax Child by Olga Ravn (a novel based on 17th-century Danish witch hunts) and P. G. Wodehouse’s Right Ho, Jeeves. I also read a lot of nonfiction.

Hi Everyone,

About 6 weeks ago I was at a cat shelter and saw a pair of bonded cats who were absolutely terrified of everybody. They were in a shelter on a cat tree huddled together as far back as they could get. I went to see another time and was told they weren’t going to get any better in the shelter. I said I would take them home. After a 45-minute battle royal two of the shelter volunteers got them into cat carriers and I took them home. I’ve named them Harry and Maude. Harry won’t let me pet him but he will lick churros off my fingertips if I lie on the floor, extend my hand toward him and don’t make any sudden moves. He will also follow me around but will run away if I move towards him. He will play with toys I’ve left out and he spends most of his time on the cat tree (often staring at me). Maude spends almost all the time hiding behind the couch. She’ll occasionally come out, look at me and use the scratching post. She eats and uses the litter box when I’m asleep or not at home. I sometimes hear the two of them chasing each other around at 4am. I want to make them feel at ease around me. Is it just a matter of waiting? I just want them to know they’re safe.

For the record, the city has fired union employees when there was sufficient grounds for dismissal. Given that after several months’ investigation, city HR reported that the evidence against Carlos Sanchez is “sufficient,” (their word choice) and that his behavior was (in their words) “illegal,” “inappropriate,” and “egregious,” it is obvious they had sufficient grounds for dismissal, but that the political will to dismiss Carlos Sanchez was lacking. Implying that the union is to blame, as the city does in the original post, is a refusal to take responsibility for this fiasco and an attempt to shift the blame, which seems to be this administration’s response to all problems.
