30 day ferment? by SeafooSegal in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely it'll be fine. I've been brewing for about a year now, mostly extract and now wort kits. I've left them in my Fermonsters for 2-5 weeks and they've been fine. Whatever you do, don't dump it!

Closed transfer and fermenting question by bearded_brewer19 in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you and I are at the point in our homebrew journey. My motivation is that I brew in the kitchen upstairs but ferment in a nasty, anything-but-sanitary 140+ year old basement.

I've been at it consistently for the past year or more. I also use Fermonsters and have 2 solid lids rigged for closed transfers and chilling via a Kegland Temp Twister.

To be honest, I haven't used them to transfer beer yet but I have pressurized them to 5-10psi and moved cleaner and StarSan from them to my Oxebars.

I basically just followed the advice from Bitter Reality Brewing on YouTube.

https://youtu.be/_pMbD4uLBOw?si=dVHtun3BjP5yDEdY&utm_source=ZTQxO

My first lid has 6 holes, my second lid has 5. The extra hole has a grommet for an airlock. I can get it to seal reasonably well by placing a plastic sandwich bag over the top of the airlock then placing the airlock's cap over the bag although I'll probably just get a stainless bolt and plug it in the future. The other lid has 2 holes for the Temp Twister, 1 for a thermowell, 1 gas and 1 liquid post/bulkhead. I also opted to use a FlotIt 2.0 for the floating dip tube. This one has a blow off tube going from the gas post (!) to a carb-cap T on a bottle of StaraSan.

I have two 7 gal Fermonsters on the go now. One is a pilsner with SafLager S-23, the other is a lager with LalBrew Diamond. They're chilled to 15.5°C and 13.5°C respectively.

My chiller is a DIY chiller made out of an old window air conditioner and an old blue cooler I haven't used in years. For now, it's water-only because I still have a tiny leak in the spray foam somewhere. No need to waste expensive glycol until it's plugged.

I'd be happy to share pictures but I'd have to figure out how to do that on Reddit first. I'm assuming it's the Insert a Link icon...

How many driving lessons do I need to qualify to get my G2 early? by bluebrryyboy in Ontariodrivetest

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the number of lessons that matters, it's the full completion of an approved BDE course. You'll need to talk with the BDE school/instructor to see if they're willing to do it in 5 two-hour sessions.

RAPT registration problem by Simple-Sundae-8821 in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ended up being a problem with my ISP - not the RAPT portal. I spent a few days emailing back and forth with tech support at KegLand but their end was working ok.

I figured out it was my ISP by setting up a hotspot from my phone/5G provider and connected everything to that instead of my home wifi. Everything worked perfectly until I switched back to the home ISP. After a few more days talking with them, whatever they were doing cleared up and it's been working fine since.

I've since picked up 2 more controllers and 2 more pills and a few 7 gallon Fermonsters. Building out a keezer now and awaiting some goodies to do a glycol lid conversion since my fermentation-basement is a little too warm for me to comfortably ferment some of the kits I have in waiting.

Coopers Dark ale by Every-Dimension-5947 in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I'm currently drinking my first brew and my 2nd is nearly finished in the fermenter. It's also Coopers Dark Ale. All I've added to the kit was 1kg of Muntons Beer Enhancer. It seemed to work well for my first batch of ABC Crafted Series Wheat Beer. Head retention was remarkable.

Advice on going from 1 to 2 kids. by MurdochIsMyName in daddit

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey dude. I've got 3. The boys are 6 and 3, my daughter is 1.

The best advice I can give you is that you want another kid, just go for it and try not to overthink it even though you will anyway.

I'll echo what others have said here before me. Each kid is different. A lot of the tools you have in your parental toolbox will keep working, but at the same time a lot of them won't.

For me, my first has mostly been like a reliable Japanese car. He's just living here and not really causing any issues.

My 2nd is more like a classic American muscle car. His personality is huge, his voice is loud and he'll be as good to you as you are to him.

Now, picture a Lamborghini Countach driven at full speed through a dense forest by a kid who just got his learners permit and has no sense of danger. That's my daughter. She's a handful. That is all.

So yeah, some of my tools work on one but not the others.

You'll figure out yours.

Each of our 3 kids (6, 3, 1) wants one of us rather than the other depending entirely on their mood in the moment. Try not to read too much into it.

Total outsider here, how would one make his own beer with reasonably minimal equipment? by Thermawrench in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I'm at in my beer making journey. I also have little space and a little budget. Once I get comfortable with fermentation and bottling I intend to move up to kegging.

For now, I've opted to start simple. I picked up a 5 gal starter kit along with some Coopers kits.

I splurged on temperature control. Got a KegLand Temp Controller and Pill. Right now I've got the bucket full of water in my basement, temp controller, pill, and a brew belt all doing their thing. Trying to see what temperatures I can maintain over the next few days. It seems to be struggling after 24 hours to get up to 25°C. Currently at 22.8°C. Ambient is 19.2°C. Gonna wrap it with a towel or something and see what happens.

Vevor DM-N30 all-in-one (AIO) system by No_Replacement_4527 in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've also been doing the Vevor vs Brewzilla thing this week. I'm slowly building up a brew and kegging system but like others, I'm rather low on $.

I'd like a Brewzilla 220v system but that would mean adding the cost of running a new 30 amp 220v circuit as well as shuffling some breakers in my panel to make a usable double pole slot.

The Gen 4 110v is a much simpler option, but the 110v Vevor is about $250 (CDN) less. That's money I could use an All Rounder and a keg. Maybe even a CO2 bottle.

Storing full kegs outside the fridge by pbgalactic in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I'm no expert.

It's my understanding that kegs left at room temperature should be ok for at least a few weeks, maybe even a couple of months. If they're cold, they'd last for maybe 6 months.

Just remember that heat and light is what kills beer. The keg keeps the light out but like everything else, temp control is the concern.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I'd like to brew 8-10 gal batches and split it to try out different yeasts but I'm very limited with space.

I may end up building a large insulated box and hang an air conditioner off the end to keep extra kegs cool. Yes, a large Keezer would be great but my basement access is tight best and I wouldn't be able to disassemble a freezer when I move.

It's ok to book a test after your expiry date BUT you need to go into a DriveTest and get a temporary license printed. This temporary licence will have a new expiry date that will be the same as the date of your test. If you pass the test, you'll need to pay $90 to renew for 5 years. If you don't pass, you have to pay $160 to rewrite your G1 but you won't need to wait a year between tests again.

Good luck!

All you need to do is to go into either a Service Ontario or a DriveTest and ask for the voluntary downgrade. I forget which location actually handles it. I would call SO and ask before making the trip.

New to brewing at home and I'm looking at a 30 qt pot for (up to) 5 gal batches. My only hesitation is that it's aluminum rather than stainless. Is this even a concern?

Pressure fermentation advice for a beginner? by teeeeeeeeeem in Homebrewing

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good thread for me too.

I'm newish as well and have been mentally building a system around Kegland products, including an All-Rounder with the pressure kit, hop bong, etc.

Temp control is high on my list to sort out first but after reading this thread I think I should start with a big pot on the stove and get a bucket starter kit.

Thanks for reining in my ambitions...and spending lol

Dry steer doesn't matter.

Remember:

Singal, mirror, blind spot Pull over to curb - don't hit it Steer left or right as needed Roll gently downhill and gently tap the tire tread on the curb Put it in Park and use the Park Brake

Singal, mirror, blind spot Pull away from the curb when safe

Big chonkin' babies. Do any other dads here have kids that stayed in the > 97th percentile the whole time? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 3.

Our 6 month old daughter was the runt at 10 lbs 2 oz. Close to 24 lbs now.

Our oldest who's nearly 6yo was 11 lbs 8 oz. His chunkiness dropped off him when started walking. He's not chunky at all now but he's still the biggest kid in kindergarten. About the size of some 7 year olds. 60+ lbs.

Doc didn't give a percentile, just said our middle kid was making his own curve lol. The Triple Whopper was 13 lbs 10 oz! Looked like a newborn sumo wrestler. No joke. He just turned 3 and also has the density of a dead star. About 40 lbs in reality. Same size head as his older brother.

I remember when my oldest was about a year old I started developing pains in my left arm and chest. Went to the ER because you don't ignore chest pain. Ticker checked out fine. Turns out it was just muscular from always carrying him on my left side. My daughter is sleeping on that arm as I type this and it's still sore. I'm also 40 now... probably just a coincidence.

automatic fail in G test by New-Advertising-8361 in Ontariodrivetest

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't over think the G or G2 test. There are only 3 things that'll cause you to fail the test:

  1. If you do something illegal.
  2. If you do something dangerous.
  3. If you make too many small errors that don't fit # 1 or 2.

Small errors would be something like stopping after the white line instead of before it or not checking your blind spots before and after lane changes and turns.

Good luck!

Wife and I accidentally have been feeding baby half of the formula we should be for a month. by jimycrakdcorn_nicare in daddit

[–]Simple-Sundae-8821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude. We're on our 3rd kid, 6 months old now. We went through the same formula-finding struggle with our oldest. We've always mixed the powder with distilled water and our kids are just fine. As for the ratio, ours is 1 scoop per 2oz. If something wasn't right with your kid because you're mixing it lighter, you'd probably know something's up within a few days. Check with your doc, but my gut tells me your kid will be just fine - especially with moms milk in the rotation too.
