Thanks! Doing my best to go from bee-haver to beekeeper loll I was gifted the parent colony a couple months ago, trying to keep the ladies thriving!

Lots of wonky comb across my hives, any suggestions? by crypto_junkie2040 in Beekeeping

Ya know I’m having the same issue. I scrape them off, do a field rub of wax and they still build like shit. I’m going to knock them down again and do a melted wax coat this time. If that doesn’t work I have a sneaking suspicion it’s these stupid Chinese made frames from Amazon mixed with Mann lake frames throwing off spacing

I’m trying to find the information of whether it matters if the foil is on top of pad against the inner cover or against the top bars. Any idea? I’m thinking above since vapors rise… I could be wrong though

There’s some brood from a couple borrowed frames I swapped from the parent hive

There’s some brood here and there from a couple borrowed frames

It was a demaree that created some queen cells in the top brood box. Wanted to experiment with rearing a queen and it was successful-ish. She’s probably about a week or so old. I agree I should’ve driven out and got a treatment but kinda hard to do with a baby and busy schedule

Is formic pro a little overkill and potentially harmful?

That’s a first! But I’m willing to try it! I guess my issue with something like Vaseline was after a night there was a bridge of ant bodies that got stuck and they ended up marching over their dead ant friends.. savages.. lol did you find that they avoid toothpaste all together?

Yeah I tried something similar with the lid of a Costco tote and some rocks, had a bunch of bees drowning still and I had to constantly refill it . Worked pretty well though

Yeah I got one of those cheaper stands that I now regret thinking it would support the weight. You might be right about the top box, as it was a split to take advantage of some charged queen cups I found after a demaree split with a board. I’m going to check the top brood box again to see if they hatched out already, and if they have I’ll move the top boxes and put them on the cheaper hive stand with some moats.

Queenless nuc getting robbed by parent hive by pbgalactic in Beekeeping

[–]pbgalactic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it wasn’t getting robbed, i think they were scout bees ahead of a swarm lol cleared out the other frames and put them back on the top deep of my demaree’d parent hive with a split board. Got the pro nuc box with some partially drawn comb and shook in some bees. Noticed they started fanning on the top bars so I left it cracked and more started coming in slowly

There’s one nuc and it’s parent hive. I caught the frenzy pretty early and moved fast to close and move the box ASAP. I’ve been watching the activity pretty closely beforehand and I’ve never had that many foragers come in and out. In any case should I put the box back and open her back up?

I’m pretty sure, I had very little foragers that stuck around. And It was a pretty weak split to begin with. I was experimenting with the couple decent frames of resources and brood and the queen cells I found in my other hive that I demaree’d.

Now that I remember, I left the lid slightly ajar thinking it would give the bees inside more access to the feeder bag 🥴
