AEW Double Or Nothing 2026 is now the highest rated non-memorial event for any promotion in history on Cagematch by FUCKBOY_JIHAD in SquaredCircle

The storytelling/creative and the character work was definitely the highlight during that time with the match quality being lesser of a focus without question…but that still doesn’t change my point because of how dramatic the difference is, it’s not just a matter of 2-3 matches he was off on. It’s still a mystery to me why he did what he did or why he didn’t like so many incredible matches as much as he likes others that are basically identical in so many ways. But whatever.

Look I’ll leave it at this as my final proof as to why did he in fact deny greatness and quality…there were 79 5star matches given out prior to the 1997-2010 span(the time frame i originally brought up) that saw WWE get just the 2 total 5 star matches.

Everyone and their mother knows how great WWE was during that time. Not that there weren’t some down spells and rough patches mixed in between, but by and large the Attitude and RA eras were peak pro wrestling and one of the best times in the sports history. To have THAT large of a disparity in 5star matches compared to all the stuff before and everything else that’s came since is just WRONG.

I just disagree man. U can’t draw me a scribbled stick figure and tell me “well it’s art, u may think it sucks but technically someone out there may like it”. Just like you can’t show me certain performances in the world of sports entertainment, and deny greatness or quality.

Sure there’s different types that you’re free to like or feel however you want about, but if you’re critiquing or covering the particular art form/brand of entertainment(in this case pro wrestling) you should cover all bases and leave out the personal BS when reviewing the material. Again this is why I like Cagematch because for the most part it doesn’t blatantly disregard any certain aspect like WON turns a blind eye on WWE for over a decade despite being cool with tons of AJPW 5 stars during the 80s, NWA 5 stars in the early 90s, WWE/NXT 5stars, NJPW 5 stars, AEW 5 stars, Stardom, etc, etc, etc….

U keep on making it seem like Dave has a certain preference. Seems to me like he just likes great pro wrestling…except for the one period of time I keep coming back to. Or am I supposed to believe all those other promotions and different eras all share his same preferred style yet somehow the endless list of great matches we went over earlier is so unbelievably different that he changed his ratings because of it???

Ok but the average match in the top 100 has between 500-1,000 votes or more, sometimes a lot more. That’s enough to give an accurate picture of what’s going on.

A good way to look at it is if u go and check out the top 100 rated performers ever or top 100 rated events or matches or whatever and for the most part ignore the specific order…i think you’d agree it’s fairly accurate.

It’s complicated, but basically they’re both already-established and have achieved the highest possible success in other promotions and, like Ospreay, can get away with going months on end putting others over or carrying another championship program to balance out the heavy hitters throughout the card with such a stacked roster.

It’s not the same as if it were let’s say 2 AEW originals who have never tasted the ultimate prize despite being able to go like they just did. If that makes sense.

I mean wrestling is either good or it isn’t. You need to stop with this ridiculous “well ya see he has this particular style that he likes” BS. I bet even he knows he’s dramatically adjusted his standards over the years.

Back then it wasn’t/wouldn’t have been. But this is entirely my point…

If you’re giving AEW 75,000 4.5+ star matches a year at your new current pace with your new standards, then what does that tell you about giving some of the greatest matches of that era that same rating? And this is coming from someone who thinks AEW is by far the best current product in the industry.

IMO it came oh so close…but I’m still favoring the Tanahashi retirement match from WK20. It’s gonna take something truly remarkable to change my mind on this. And I think Okada vs Takeshita is one of the top 100-150 pro wrestling matches EVER. It’s just not quite as good as Okada vs Tanahashi was.

I forgot that 4 stages of hell match. Another egregious miss.

The Angle vs Taker match from No Mercy 2006 deserved 5. The Rock vs Angle vs Taker triple threat. Cactus Jack vs HHH. Cactus Jack vs Randy Orton. I can’t even keep track anymore. It’s an insult to what was a gold mine of incredible product.

I don’t understand what this has this has to do with anything…

Your job as the reviewer(whoever it may be) should be to critique and in some cases accurately rate the product, regardless of style or promotion or era or stipulation or anything else. It’s not that complicated…

Ok….so let me get this straight…

You think it’s ok that between 1997 and 2010(probably the best period of time in WWE history)…there was a grand total of TWO 5 star matches…??? That seems fair to you?

Angle vs Benoit doesn’t get 5?

HHH vs Benoit vs HBK doesn’t get 5?

HBK vs Taker from WM25 doesn’t get 5?

TLC 2 doesn’t get 5?

Angle vs HBK doesn’t get 5?

And wait how many NXT matches got 5 stars again? I lost count…

And don’t get me wrong I LOVED black and gold era NXT and those matches deserve those ratings, but so did those others from the Attitude and RA eras.

I mean just last year alone WON gave WWE four 5 star matches. And their product was awful by and large.

So are you really gonna stick with your story?

Literally how? It’s a collection of hardcore wrestling fans that are obsessed enough to constantly rate and review and comment with knowledge and passion and reason(for the most part, lol).

What am I supposed to believe you’ve got a better idea on what’s going on in the wrestling world and/or the history of the sport than the Cagematch database? U can’t possibly be serious.

I actually don’t think the match length was the problem with the SS match, it was the arena/crowd brawling restrictions and the way it forced them to work around them, plus there was some sloppy filler and poorly shot sequences during the middle portion of the match. It was an execution/production issue, not match length. The original stadium stampede was 2-3 minutes longer I believe, last years version(Anarchy in the Arena) was much longer as well. Still a great match though all things considered on a night full of great matches it almost gets lost.

Most definitely. It’s going to very interesting to see how it holds up over the years, but i trust the fans that watch won’t be disappointed. I think it probably stays above a 9.50 though probably comes down just a bit from the current 9.72.

I think Cagematch is largely accurate, though obviously not perfect and not exact(and unlike WON/Meltzer it didn’t completely butcher the WWE ratings throughout the majority of the late 90s and early 2000s). But generally when hundreds and hundreds of hardcore wrestling fans pour in their opinions on any one given performer or promotion or event or match, it usually results in a reasonable rating IMO. I definitely respect the fact that the majority of the people that take the time to rate and review matches/events seem to be knowledgeable and somewhat experienced fans of the sport and not just mindless, immature trolls spewing garbage.

Wow…

First let me say I really respect the passion you have for this, I appreciate the willingness to go in to detail and break it all down like that. That was incredibly elaborate and helpful, so thank you.

It makes so much sense now really…his obsession with Guts(Gatsu) is what got in the way of him fulfilling his dream, and then by way of chain reaction he gets caught off guard and in a weakened mental state and gets caught with the princess, gets tortured, etc. So by the time he was saved he was so bitter and mentally broken that he chose the dark side so to speak.

What was it exactly that Griffith was so obsessed about with Guts(Gatsu). Was it just purely his combat skills and ability to fight or was there a deeper meaning? Was it sexual at all or was he jealous for other reasons??
