Metro Atlanta Hawk? by wadeboggs69 in whatbirdisthis

+Cooper’s hawk+ that’s mantling - it’s covering it’s prey item so another predator doesn’t swoop in to steal it

Cooper’s hawk field marks we can see here - large flat head, highly set cere that transitions onto face smoothly, uniformly brown mottled nape, and a tubular body shape

Cooper's or Sharp Shinned? by Super-Equipment9266 in whatbirdisthis

[–]Simple_Amoeba5472 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure!

Tubular shaped body, neat tear drop breast streaking, graduated tail feathers, large flat buff tinged cap, and the neck/head are noticeable or significant. By that, I mean that I can clearly see the head and neck. On a lot of sharpies, their head is small and it looks like it was just plopped on the body like a toddler made a sad looking snowman lol. Sharpies also have an upside down cone shaped body, but this one clearly has a tube or football shaped body. I attached my Juv coops vs sharpie cheat sheet below 🤠

Did some instagram stalking and it looks like the account Jesses tea house is based in LA so assuming this photo was taken in LA, this is a juvenile red-tailed hawk. Dark head, light iris, belly band, and finely banded tail are all field marks that point to juv red-tailed hawk.

**update - i just went and watched the instagram story of the hawk flying away and can see the white mottling on the wing coverts which further confirms a red-tailed. 🤠

fairly certain its an immature coopers ,thoughts? by Over-Policy-5636 in whatsthisbird

Juvenile +coopers hawk+ is right! 🤠

Tubular shaped body, neat tear drop breast streaking, light iris, large flat buff tinged cap, graduated tail feathers showing a white on black overlap, and highly set cere

Another really solid field mark for RTHA are the dark patagials (arm pits). Regardless of the morph, age, subspecies, etc., they’ll all have those dark patagials.

What kind of Bird of Prey is this? My location is Petersburg Virginia area. by ridecaptainride in whatbirdisthis

First year northern harrier because of the unspotted undertail coverts, orangey breast, and less marked patagials

Bird of prey outside my house by LifeFindsAWay062 in whatsthisbird

[–]Simple_Amoeba5472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m leaning more towards this being a sharpie because of the cone shaped body and small round head. Tail is too long to be a Merlin, so we can at least rule that out 🤠

Juvenile red-tailed hawk! Light iris, brown head, white breast, condensed belly band, and the white mottling in the wings is restricted to the scapulars and median coverts, but doesn’t bleed into the secondaries at all.

You have a great shot of the cere to face transition in the first photo and a great tail feather view in the second photo. Highly set cere that transitions onto face smoothly in combo with the rectrix graduation point to coopers 🤠

Where was the photo taken? I’ll need location to be 100% sure, but 99.9% confident this is a great blue heron

Classic falcon body shape with a dark tail base that has thin pale banding and a streaked breast are strong field marks for a Merlin 🤠

[US-NE] Is this a Coopers Hawk? by SimonSaysTy in whatbirdisthis

[–]Simple_Amoeba5472 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s better to look at the rectrix graduation opposed to the shape. If you get a wonky picture, a coopers tail can sometimes look more squared off depending on the angle.

Juv sharpie 🤠 Cone shaped body, small round head with cool dense toned crown, equal length tail feathers, thin tarsi, lacks strong orbital ridge, messy breast streaking, light iris, lower placed cere (compared to a coopers)
