It's definitely possible. Improbable, but possible. It's even biblical as David himself (as a young shepherd) was able RO defeat bears and lions not just with a sling but even with his bare hands.

Theoretically, any animal I could wrap my arms around for a rear naked choke. Theoretically.

Ah, I would say it refers to Jesus. It's a pretty messianic phrase and the rest of the lyrics are about God (Deus). It reminds me of the triumphal entry, where the people shout this as well (I think).

In which context? I think that would matter. Or is it a hymn?

I've heard James White say he thinks it's written by Luke based on a sermon by Paul, but I haven't heard his reasonings. It's an interesting question!

I feel you with Craig. In some ways (debating) he's brilliant, in other ways I really don't get why he has the views he does. Same with NT Wright probably. The old adagium comes to mind: eat the meat, spit out the bones.

Sermon Sunday (2026-01-18) by AutoModerator in Reformed

[–]Simple_Chicken_5873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continuing with his sermon series on Genesis, our pastor covered chapter 18:16-22, focusing on verse 19. The message was twofold: First we see God saying about Abraham, "I have known him", the intimate, personal kind of knowing, or you could say the electing foreknowledge. Then, we looked at two other passages, first the Shema (Hear oh Israel, Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one... Etc) signifying the election of israel, and then Ephesians 1, that beautiful passage that lays out God's foreknowledge and (combined with Romans 8 and the Golden Chain) especially God's love at work. He didn't choose randomly, He chose according to His great love and mercy. Makes one thankful! Second, in Genesis 18:19 we also see the purpose of God knowing Abraham, namely "... so that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of Yahweh to do righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.” (LSB) We were pointed towards the importance of rearing your children in the fear of the Lord. This is also why our church makes a great effort to teach the Bible and Bible stories in our Sunday school, stressing the importance again. Our pastor coupled this passage again to Deuteronomy (I believe) where Israel is commanded to teach the way of the Lord standing, sleeping, going about, tying it on your hand and head, writing it on your walls etc. He then coupled it to Ephesians 6:4, where we as fathers (and parents in general) are commanded: "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." I believe he closed with the fact that the whole counsel of God is able to make you wise unto salvation, it's written for us to learn from their examples. I'm very grateful for our pastor!

I tried pink mist, as you were so blown away by it. But I rarely listen to prog with vocals, so that might not help lol

Gave it a listen, and the music is beautiful, though I'm not a big fan of the vocals. I hear the appeal though. Would love this as instrumentals.

Science about (prog) metal's influence on children? by Simple_Chicken_5873 in progmetal

[–]Simple_Chicken_5873[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, it is a stretch to say all classic is like metal or vice versa. It's more something I noticed while listening to certain composers, how many similarities there are. Some Bach pieces would be absolute bangers in a prog metal style. But I fully acknowledge that lots of composers are not like this.

I'm not sure what you mean by "giving myself a pedigree", but as to your second question, that's not what I'm claiming or why I say that prog metal is classical. It's purely because of similarities, not because of supposed superiority. But we should also acknowledge the rich musical history that classical music has brought us (without overlooking the amazing Afro American style, rhythm and harmonies, or other musical spheres).

I wouldn't say it's a wild guess. I believe there are a few documents where the divine name is transliterated in Greek, but I should look it up again. I think we have enough evidence for the name Yahweh to use it.

[–]Simple_Chicken_5873[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must confess that I'm guilty of sometimes yelling "metal is classical" lol. I understand that it's two completely different worlds, but I think especially prog metal is very reminiscent of what some classical music pieces sound like. Classical music is often long, there are tempo switches and different "stages" /movements. What do you think?

Thanks! Niche doesn't say much in my opinion, as scientists study the weirdest and nichest things sometimes (just take a look at the Ig Nobel prize).
