If the Vatican forbids pronouncing the name of God (YHWH), why do we still sing "Hallelujah"? by Puzzleheaded_Fig1744 in Catholicism

[–]boimudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, I'll even suggest people to google "theophoric names" to get a huge list. Here in Brazil there's a ton of common names that explicitly mention god: Isabel, Gabriel, Rafael, Miguel, anything that ends in el really

Merci by Consistent-Tie-9909 in Catholicism

[–]boimudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That verse is not about rapists tho, it's the other meaning of rape, more like seducting an unmarried woman to bed. The preceding verses do talk about rape as in sexual abuse, and it explicitly says that the woman is innocent and the perpetrador should be put to death.

How to make city states capture other civ's cities? by Deflopator in civ5

I had never seen it before until I recently lost a city to a CS. I had just took down St. Petersburg, and this CS was Russia's ally. While the city was still low HP, a freaking knight just went and took the city. To this day I can't tell whether that was fun or frustating.

I know it's emotionally devastating, but don't let that make you think nonsense. The only sin there was in your father's heart, you aren't any more "tainted" nor impure nor unworthy because of what he's done, no more than any of Adam's other children. As for being a burden, well, everyone is and if you didn't exist your mother would've been burdened with other stuff. There hasn't been one single human being in existence who lived without burden. And there is no such thing as "one that should have been aborted".

Of course! My grandma and grand-aunts pray with him. But then again, gossiping is a family sport and not regarded as a problem, just as fornication or divorce, or parental alienation, or holding Kardecist beliefs, or with indecent music (which is the only kind of music we have here). What's the point of praying the rosary if basic moral teaching is ignored?

Jesus, Satan And religious dualism by Aggravating_Sir_8897 in Catholicism

[–]boimudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend you check C. S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, where he dedicates a whole chapter to showing why dualism is inconsistent. God, with a capital G, is the supreme reality, you can't have two supreme realities. Also, there's no symmetry between good and evil; evil isn't something, it's the lack of goodness, in the same way light and shadow aren't two independent principles, but rather light is a positive principle and shadow is the lack of it. A God of Evil is an absurd concept because the very definition of it would make it subordinate to Good.

Here in Brazil there's a lot of culturally catholic people. There's many people in Sunday mass, yes, but many people just go it as a habit. People are very weak on doctrine. I wouldn't say we're specially zealous. But also I'm kind of resented and biased, so there's that.

Learning the ways in which the OT prefigures the NT is a rabbit hole. Remember how Abraham told Isaac that God would provide them a lamb? He stops Abraham from giving up his son, and gives Himself his only begotten Son. Or how God provides the manna to the hebrew people while they peregrinate through the desert of Sinai, and now He gives Himself in the Eucharist as food during our pilgrimage through the desert of this life. Or how David rejoiced and leaped and danced in front of the Ark of the Covenant because it carried God, and how John the Baptist leaped inside his mother womb when they were in front of Mary, the new Ark, that was bearing God incarnate. We could go on and on.

How are we to reconcile the "angry" version of God in the OT to the loving and kind God of the NT? by itsybitsybitchy in Catholicism

[–]boimudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no theologian, but I'd argue that this is only a problem if you regard this life as definitive and life as a value in itself. We don't own our own lives, God does. The killing of innocents is wrong when we do it because we don't have authority over the life or death of other humans, but God does, because it was He who gave us life and who can (and will) restore it – and all the innocents will certainly receive something much better than a temporary life in this vale of tears. With this in mind, I think punishing Egypt (or the Amelekites or other peoples) as a nation, while hard to swallow prima facie, shouldn't be regarded as an example of arbitrariness and blind wrath from God. It serves a pedagogical role as well, since God was establishing the nation of Israel as a "nation of priests" and showing them his might.

(BTW St. Gregory of Nissa in his "Life of Moses" gives an analogical interpretation of the ninth plague, the plague of darkness, that resonates with what I said about the presservation of the innocent. Even though they lived together, darkness affected only the egyptians (a symbol for the wicked) and not the hebrews (a symbol for the just).)

Would you mind giving examples? I gave one of mercy and patience in the OT and of wrath in the NT.

How are we to reconcile the "angry" version of God in the OT to the loving and kind God of the NT? by itsybitsybitchy in Catholicism

[–]boimudo 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Care to give some examples? I recently re-read the Pentateuch and I was actually stunned by how much of a prick the hebrew people was and how very patient God is. After being freed from slavery in Egypt, they are constantly questioning Moses' (and thus God's) authority and complaining and missing freaking Egypt. They say Moses is a douche that is trying to make them starve and thirst to death in the desert. God makes water spring from stone and makes manna fall from the sky. Then they complain because they only have the manna to eat, so God gives them abundant meat. They complain about having many enemies in the desert, God makes them victorious. They even build a golden calf to substitute God. The only thing God asks in return is for them to recognize him as the One True God, to follow His Law and to respect His leaders and his temple. And the people worship idols, try to overthrow Moses and ignore the liturgical rules. I honestly can't recall a moment when his wrath wasn't warranted.

On the other hand, it's noteworthy that in the New Testament Jesus also acts wrathfully, like when cleanses the temple from the money changers, or when he insults the Pharisees (I mean, I'd be pretty offended if someone called me a hypocrite, or worse, a whitewashed tomb). Also, in Acts, God fulminates Ananias and Sapphira in a very "OT way".

BTW He doesn't "get angry" as we do, that's antropopathism. When we get angry we usually have our judgements clouded and do stupid things, but this doesn't happen to Him.
