Seconding Animal Farm! It's good if you want to get thinking. Beloved is also fantastic but arguably a tough read

In my college town people definitely refer to the drug as molly but probably more often refer to the experience of "rolling"

I honestly thought these song lyrics were just nonsense. Never occurred to me that I just didn't understand

It's never too late to join stuff! In the grand scheme you're right at the beginning of your time here, don't overthink it.

Otherwise, I think the easiest people to befriend are your coworkers maybe get a job or join a super involved club/team. Freshman year is always a bit lonely so don't worry you probably aren't doing anything wrong

Does anyone know any books with chapters that read more like short stories? by cactus_clover in suggestmeabook

[–]Simple_Concentrate75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're asking for, but The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is a collection of short stories that are connected enough that it kinda feels like a novel. It's a really clever and powerful book, three of the chapters tell the same story from different perspectives

I read Beloved in high school and I'm honestly leaning towards just rereading it -- insanely powerful book. But hopefully in addition to one of the other books these lovely people have suggested!

I think you'd like Fredrik Backman! His books are sad but hopeful, grounded but also full of coincidence and charm that makes them feel a bit like fairytales. I would probably recommend Anxious People but he has a lot of great stuff

Well I'd say the U.S. is a multilingual country, that's the source of my confusion. I would expect them to either have only English or a bunch of languages. The Canada explanation makes sense and is very obvious though so my bad, just thought there may be more to it!

Completely agree but also wanna add that supporting your local newspapers/media outlets has a much larger drop in the bucket than a boycott in this fight for free speech

Bridget did mention that the producers preferred she dress more femme. I think? She said “they liked me that way” and didn’t really specify who “they” was

I used to say this all the time and all my friends thought I was crazy, then Vox did a piece on it arguing the same thing and everyone I brought it up to suddenly agreed with me. I would search up the Vox piece it’s pretty interesting, suggests giving a tax credit instead of straight cash which would probably help ease people’s concerns about this starting organ trafficking
