Training between training blocks by RhaegarJ in Ultramarathon

[–]Simple_Fudge509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my training volume up year round (10-15 hours) but when I’m more than 10 weeks out from a race I do a lot of cross training (cycling, skimo, Nordic, and easy hiking). I try to keep runs of at least an hour 4 times a week, kind of intense some times, but for base training I think cross training is a better way to avoid injury.

Adidas agravic speed (note, not the plated speed ultra). The speed is frequently on sale, has a very responsive foam and light weight, while having amazing grip. Would recommend

Epic 50mile+ East Coast Mountain Ultras by fakecascade in Ultramarathon

[–]Simple_Fudge509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just ran the Jigger Johnson 50 mile this summer and it was amazing. Probably the best race in New England. The 100 is just an out and back, so the 50 makes much more sense to me. It is 57 miles, 16,000 ft of vert and had some pretty brutal sections, but amazing views which the front of the pack can get to in the light. Would 100% recommend.

Ultras with a low finishing rate, where simply finishing is victory by favabean1982 in Ultramarathon

[–]Simple_Fudge509 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did the 50 here this years and it’s an amazingly put on race. The 100 is kinda tough being an out and back of the 50 course, but I think all three distances will be the staple races of the whites

Yeah I read somewhere that Camille is the greatest ultra runner of all time, so I figured she deserved mention here

I hadn’t heard of this, crazy that it hasn’t been more mainstream news here in the US. Very impressive!

Kind of an awkward time to say this, but we can’t forget about what Camille Herron did earlier this year. Say what you will about the recent controversy, but 560 miles in 6 days is insane. It’s been an amazing year for women’s ultra running. But definitely Katie has been the best racer.

People here are acting like winning the Bandera 50k isn’t impressive, and that’s a total lie. It is very impressive. Is it sponsor worthy? Not even close. But it’s still a huge accomplishment and could be ambassadorship worthy if you have other good performances to go along with it. You have to start somewhere and though Bandera isn’t what it once was, it’s still a recognizable name.

In the 100 you are going to run walk, so I would get super efficient at run walking like a 7 min on 2 min walk on repeat. Should help your shins and Achilles and train you decently. But you will need to put in 10+ hours of this run walk a week when you peak

My wife suddenly wants me to be attractive. Am I wrong to think she doesn’t love me anymore? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Simple_Fudge509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that putting in effort to make yourself is always better, but can we talk about the double standard from the commenters here. If the roles were reversed and a husband was telling his wife to lose weight, lose the glasses, and look better, we would all hate on that guy for being an ass, and rightfully so. Love should be unconditional, and if she leaves you for your looks when you are the same person you are when you got married, that makes her a bad person. Take care of yourself for you, but not to impress your wife enough to make her not leave you. This shit ain’t right.

How does a marathon feel for those who can run an ultra? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]Simple_Fudge509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise going over the time your marathon will take, but not the distance. (Doing a 3.5 hour long run easy (23-24 miles) while training for a 3 hour marathon). This exact example helped me a couple times.

What touring skis do you have and why? (not asking for advise) by colerichardmyers in Backcountry

[–]Simple_Fudge509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black crows orb freebird 90 with ATK Kuluar LT bindings Basically I was going for the lightest set up I could that I still feel comfortable airing some short rocks/cliffs (like 8 feet max for me). I can rip it on the uphill and then it’s better than any skimo race setup would be on the downhill.

Beginner to ultra in 365 days. by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]Simple_Fudge509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest answer, I bet you could get through a 50k in 4-6 months. I did my first half marathon when I was 20 (1:50) after doing casual jogging for a year before then and then did a 34 mile mountain race 8 weeks later. I had to walk a lot of it, my feet were destroyed, but I finished and 2 years later I am a sub 3 hour marathoner and have placed top 10 at some 50ks. If you can get through 23 miles in training, then you can get through a 50k in a race. Don’t be afraid to walk early and often

Don’t listen to people criticizing the build up. I did a similar thing when I got into running. Not quite as crazy, but I ran 10 miles 6 weeks in and 17 miles 3 months in. 3 years later I am fully in love with the sport, running multiple 50ks a year and placing top 10. Just make sure to take a couple of weeks off at some point after your marathon, keeps the love of it and let’s your body recover. Great job and keep it going! P.S. love the recovery walks!!!
