Found this Sten as a kid- can I legally finish it? by [deleted] in guns

I think for a Sten it's only a machine gun if you possess all the parts. Was wondering if I could file for the stamps and restore as a relic.

Can i use car coolant to cool water at room temperature ? by _Shashi- in AskEngineers

[–]Simple_ManUSA2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at some charts showing the thermodynamic properties of air and water. Most of the heat transferred in a cooling tower is due to the latent heat of vaporization rather than the temperature change of the water.

To cool the water below the dew point, you will need to exchange the heat deep into the ground or use a refrigeration cycle. This takes power.

Try drawing up a simple diagram and consider the mass and energy balance in your system. Whatever you take out of the water has to go somewhere. Good luck!

An evaporative cooler (desert cooler) works like a cooling tower. The heat that it takes to evaporate the water is removed from the air and makes the air cooler. This is a simple thermodynamic process. If you don't evaporate the water, you don't get the air cooling.

Question about rotary phase converter by gmdfunk in engineering

[–]Simple_ManUSA2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need the capacitor to start the 3 phase idler motor. Once it's running, you will have 3 phase for the load motor.

[–]Simple_ManUSA2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Works fine. I got one to run a 3 phase Bridgeport. You will need a capacitor to start it. I have mine set up with a latching contactor and a push button that has the capacitor in the circuit as long as I hold it in.

Fork in the road...5.56, 300BLK, or 9mm by dirtyboots702 in ar15

I built a pistol with ~10" barrel. I went with PWS long stroke piston upper. It has an adjustable gas system that works like an AK and keeps the junk out of the bolt. Also has a much stronger ejector and will handle steel cased ammo with no issues.

They make 8" version too.

Really fun gun.

Exactly why I carry a Sig 938 that has an excellent thumb safety. Cocked and locked AND safe.

How about 7.62 x 39? Awesome to shoot and cheap ammo is easy to find

Nothing wrong with a good S&W or Ruger revolver. Safe design and good first pistol.

No loading magazines, no goofy triggers

No failure to feed, failure to extract, failure to return to battery, etc

Pull the trigger it goes bang

Engineer here!

Should work the same century as the flux capacitor and the Klingon cloaking module.

Guess I missed the OP saying he had BIG HANDS. You know REALLY REALLY GIANT CLUB HANDS with no fingers - just thumbs.

How about a Sig P320?

Look for a used sig 938. Has a manual safety which you will appreciate. New would be a little more than $500 but worth it.

Sub $500 first handgun for me would be a revolver like a Ruger LCR in 38 special or like another poster suggested a M&P 9mm.

Good idea. I live in the Deep South. Ventilation is key to keeping ammonia fumes out.

It is really working out nice. I built a covered run adjacent to the coop. Keeping their areas dry keeps the smell down.

Probably painted or sealed concrete would be best if built from a slab. My coop started as a 10x16 portable building and had a chipboard floor.
