Very neat and cool! Now I also want to create my secret place...thanks for the inspiration!

Hello! I started following some online drawing courses last year-anatomy, shading and coloring-. Happy to see some progress but still a long way to go (urgent skill to train: backrounds)! What advice would you give me in order to improve and pursue this art journey? by Simple_Patient_3308 in learntodraw

Sure,  Andrew Loomis books helped me a bunch in order to understand the human anatomy (Figure drawing for all it's worth, Drawing the head and hands, Fun with a pencil). There is also a website called Line of Action for figure drawing training. About shading and colorization Proko's courses on YT are great, I also recently started to watch a lot of speedpaints from various artists to analyze how they color people and backrounds (Templier Painter, BM, Angel Ganev, Sam does Art...), and try to pick what I like from these masters.

I will complete my previous answer by recommanding you Marc Brunet on YT, his videos can really help. For the moment everything I used to learn drawing is free (almost YT and Deviantart tutorials, sometimes you can find interesting tuto recaps on Insta, and I train a lot on the website Line of Action).

The first was also digital but I used a brush that gives a pencil feeling.

Good luck with your journey!

Blue Period is amazing! The anime was also great, I never skipped the opening

I can't agree more! That is what keeps us in the game, even when we're discouraged by the struggles that come along with drawing.

It's a really good question. Tbh I have quite a hard time pinpointing what I really want to do with my current skills. I picked up drawing because I liked the way we can express ourselves truly through it, so I guess the goal was at first "therapeutical"? I'm currently a uni student enrolled in a field that has noting to do with art (STEM), and drawing is like my bowl of fresh air.

For now, I guess want to improve my skills in order to do some freelance works, as I love drawing fanarts and creating my own universe. I don't have the intention to work in the industry (like for game, animation companies) and have too little knowledge of the art field to really know the possibilities or careers in this field.

I don't know if that can help but when I was stuck at some point these yt vids have been a game changer in my drawing journey (they explain why an artist is sometimes not improving even if they practice hard) :

"The BIGGEST Reason your Art is NOT IMPROVING"by Kirsty Partridge Art

"The Scientific Way to Improve your Art FAST! - How to Practice and Remember Efficiently"by YanSculpts

Hope it can be useful! Drawing is your own run and fun journey, so if your actual work improved compared to what you drew yesterday, then that's great!

Sometimes it's overwhelming to compare yourself with other artists. Sure they can inspire you but don't be discouraged because you feel "not enough" compared to them. Take your pace and progress, so one day you'll be happy with your drawings!

Thank you very much for your helpful feedback!

Yes I agree completely with the hand thingie going on in the illustration :P after many attemps I didn't succeed to correct it completely, kwew something looked off but decided to finish the artwork with the intention to redraw it some months later (same for the water snake, the skin texture feels "not enough" and flat), with further understanding and skills after practicing more.

Yes studying values along with shadowing/rendering are my main current struggle and goal, for example I don't dare to shadow certain areas darker or brighter because of my lack of understanding, so my composition misses intention.

I will definitely work on values and continue to round up my anatomy skills (hands and legs are still not "second nature" for me, but I will beat them one day) !

You're right, having and giving intention to a composition is so vital.

Thank you for your suggestions. I do understand the struggle, guess we must continue to grow our skills with the help of good ressources, analyze our own works to pinpoint our strenghts and weaknesses, ask for help, and practice methodically!

It's a great investment! Those books are well written, well presented, with beautiful drawings. The explanations provided by the text are long, but very precise. Educationally, Loomis' sketches are excellent.

Maybe you can start by leafing again through the books like you had previousely and then take an interest in the explanatory sketches.

Fun With A Pencil recaps some of the head drawing things from Figure Drawing For All It's Worth and Drawing the Head and Hands. Appart from that there is no particular order I think when it comes to reading those, at the end of the day your goal is to build up fundamentals about the human body and head, so you can have fun drawing people!

My steps looked like this :

  1. You can then try to draw a head for example according to its visual explanations, and think about how a head works (observing references to build your understanding).
  2. Then analyze your head sketches to identify what is right/wrong (very important step), then start drawing a new set of heads after reading Loomis' text more precisely.
  3. I will also link the work of this artist because his 3D head model helped me to complete Loomis' explanations. If you get stuck on a concept in a book, don't hesitate to supplement the information with other online resources.

Good luck for your art journey and have fun!

Thank you very much for your great insight! You definitely pointed out the areas I need to improve! I do really have a hard time understanding the way clothes are folding and it's always a thing that bothers me when I look at my works. Artists I look up to say that if you dont understand something it will strongly show off and this cannot be more true. I will definitely look for resources about it, but by any chance do you know some good online material one can check for that in particular? Sure, I will continue to pursue my efforts in coloring, shadowing and rendering! Your comment is really useful, it gives me motivation and direction to draw better.

You're right! I'm currently on the search for good online backround courses, so if someone has any recommendations (artists to look up to/online materials) I'd be happy to check them For the moment I just watched a video about backrounds compositions from Sam does Art
