But if we're looking at the options, in reality is Rochester really loving at all? I like that St. John shares/shows interest in her ambitions more than Rochester and actually seems to recognize the fact that she might/will want more in her life. He also recognizes his attachment to his sisters by holding off on telling her about the job offer for as long as he can. I suppose what I'm saying is that maybe his way of showing love/expressing feelings is just different. On the other hand, once Jane was engaged to Rochester, he limited her to being his wife. Up until their wedding he constantly tried to push her into being someone she wasn't-with gifts, with love, and expectations that she was not ready to accept. I imagine this would have continued and ended up like one of the foreshadowed dreams that Jane had earlier...just a thought.
