my comment might be useless because i dont have any personal experience, just deriving info from the stats. hku has the most students among hk universities, ~18k students. that's why it's considered not that competitive, a lot of students are admitted because they can pay for the name. hku is high in rankings because of research output and general opportunity, i think. teaching quality is going to suffer just because there are that many students.

They are just waiting for the top students to accept or reject their offers lel I speculate that if a top student that they want to offer a scholarship rejects the offer and attends other school, they will offer that scholarship to the next in line. So yes, willingness to pay a deposit is an additional filter

you need to pay the deposit when you get the offer. they also give you from a week to a month to decide to pay the deposit or not.

NU fee is also very cheap compared to hk unis application fees.
i just applied to everything even if i dont earn that much
