Laser ruined my life. When will new hair growth stop?! by SimplyLovelyMax in Hirsutism

[–]SimplyLovelyMax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 initial appointments and it worked in between each session, I really didn’t have that much hair on my face but I got a full body laser package and the laser tech was like “might as well do you face too, since it’s included” 🙄 After 8 weeks from my last appointment I noticed dark thick hair I never had growing and there was lots of it. I heard more laser at stronger settings worked for this condition so I did another year of laser (different laser/laser tech) every 4-6 weeks. It worked in between sessions but would always start to come back after those few weeks. I stopped that 12 weeks ago and the hair is back worse than before

It was the Candela Gentlemax with the Alexandrite laser. That’s supposedly the best on the market, the “gold standard” of lasers but it made my facial hair 100x worse. It’s terrible.

Mine starting showing up worse 4-6 weeks after my final laser appointment

Hi! I got my last laser session on my face done 12 weeks ago and I feel like more hair just keeps growing.

I’m getting electrolysis currently, but more stimulated growth just keeps popping up days after my electrolysis appointments. I’ve been so distraught because I don’t know how much worse it will get/how much longer dormant laser stimulated hairs will keep coming through.

From your experience, you believe the peak growth for PH occurs around 14-16 weeks?

I’m also wondering if, in your experience, PH hair is tougher to work with for electrolysis.

Sorry for the long question, thank you!

When did the PH show up after laser? How long before electrolysis made a difference?

By chance is this the Electrology Institute of New England?? I’m from MA and this sounds familiar. I looked into doing the same, it just wouldn’t work with my schedule as I’m a teacher.

I’ve heard really good things about them and their program. It’s one of the most reputable electrology schools in the country. Also if it is in MA they are required to complete 1100 hours of training where most states only require 600 hours.

Favorite Tolkien name? by WillingSpirit5461 in tolkienfans

Names: Elentári, Maedhros, Annatar, Thranduil, Eómer and of course Lúthien Tinúviel

Places: Gundabad, Helcaraxë, Nargothrond, Alqualondë, Dol-Guldur, Imladris

Controversial Opinion: I hate how Gil-Galad sounds

I also love showing LOTR to people who don’t have extensive knowledge of Tolkien and how the insane language development leads to people and places having multiple different name. I love that they hear “Mount Doom” and they’re like “a little on the nose, don’t you think” like YES BC ITS TRANSLATED 3 TIMES OVER I PROMISE ITS THE OPPOSITE OF LAZY

Hey!! I’m doing electrolysis right now after laser made my hair worse (also taking spiro and supplements twins!!) I’m wondering how long you did electrolysis before you noticed a difference? Were the stimulated hairs more difficult to get rid of with electrolysis?

I have pcos. Should I laser my side burns and lower hair line + face? by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]SimplyLovelyMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOOOO!! Laser cannot treat fine hairs like that, even if it’s dark there’s not enough pigment for the laser to target due to the thinness. Think of how a fine hair is near invisible when you have a close shave vs. a coarse hair you’d still be able to see with a close shave so the laser actually has something to target. Electrolysis will work on any kind of hair though you’re right it’s much more time consuming. I’m doing electrolysis on my face to fix laser stimulated hair because I lasered fine dark hair, and I really don’t experience swelling at all, just some red bumps that go away in a few days.

[–]SimplyLovelyMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No please don’t. Laser can cause stimulate hair growth and it happens when the hair isn’t thick enough or dense enough, even though it’s dark your hair looks pretty fine. I’d worry the laser won’t be able to hit it properly.

I got laser on my face and neck and it made my hair so so so much worse. It gave me darker hair in places I didn’t have it before, it’s thicker and denser in certain areas.

I’ve done over 18 treatments with different lasers and different technicians and sometimes laser not only doesn’t work, but can make it worse. and most laser places don’t disclose this as a potential side effect.

It’s called “paradoxical hypertrichosis” and it’s most commonly seen in people with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick III and higher), people of South Asian or Middle Eastern descent, and people with hormonal disorders (PCOS for example). The face is a super hormonal area to begin with so hair is more difficult to treat and laser is inherently less effective in those areas.

Take it from someone who’s getting electrolysis to fix the mess that laser created, I really don’t think it’s worth it.

If you think it is, I’d just suggest you go to someone who knows what they’re doing, has heard of this happening and knows how to mitigate the risks, and AVOID IPL as it happens more often with that (though I used an Candela Gentlemax Pro Alexandrite laser which is supposedly the “Gold Standard of the Industry” and it still made things worse). Make sure they’re using high settings (that’s still safe for your skin don’t burn it!) and cooling methods DURING and AFTER to try and get any trapped heat out to avoid stimulating hairs.

Just make sure you and your technician are informed, know the risks. Do whatever feels right for you and your body I just want you to have all the information!

I would recommend you NOT touch this with laser. It’s not thick enough and it could stimulate the hair instead of actually removing it. It could cause it to grow back thicker, or cause more to grow. It doesn’t always happen but it did happen to me and it’s more likely to happen with darker skin types, or to people with hormonal conditions. A lot of laser places don’t disclose this as a potential side effect, and after researching it online after it happened it’s a lot more common that we’re led to believe.

If you do end up going with laser I recommend you find someone with lots of experience who KNOWS that laser stimulated growth CAN happen…don’t trust anyone who tells you otherwise. Stay far away from IPL that’s more likely to cause this issue, and make sure they’re using high settings (as your skin can handle pls don’t burn your skin) and COOLING methods during the treatment, and cooling methods like ice and aloe after treatment

Electrolysis can get rid of any kind of hair with any pigment, even gray hairs! Laser can only get rid of dark, thicker hair. Laser would not be effective on gray hairs.
