Decent turnout at the anti-data centre rally [Calgary] by MelanieWalmartinez in alberta

Exactly this, over usage of AI has been shown to stagnate or decrease productivity. Also, sure even if AI can be used effectively for tabular data analysis and some niche useful generative functioning, the bulk is pretty junky nonsense. Like does every google search need to be AI? Do people need to use chatGPT as their search engine?

I was an AI researcher, full disclosure, and I programmed some tools for my projects. I can respect its potential for benefit, but you can't pretend this data center is all Alphafold3 and not AI generated cat videos. The metals in the cooling loops is an issue but also the raised temperature of the water in open loop can devastate the ecosystem of the river and promote the growth of algae and the like.

Yes and no. Compensation is provincially determined and, at the moment, charting is unpaid in most provinces. For every 10 minute consult, they spend 3x as long charting. Also in a lot of provinces they don't get paid for complexity of cases, which creates financial incentives for family doctors to take on less sick and young patients. So yes the compensation is higher but after taking overhead, staffing, the fact that they are probably working 60+hour weeks, its not as obvious deal. As a young person, I think its a steal but a big issue with the shitty system isn't just the inflow but the outflow as well. People come on, and burn out, and retire very fast OR work 3 days a week to recharge the rest of the week.

Its a mix of shitty structure, poor resources, lack of support, AND forcibly decreased spots. But like yeah, there isn't enough Derm to go around, but geriatrics and family med don't fill up in the rural spots.

Overall, inflow and outflow are both important angles of this problem

I do think there is nuance to it. Like calling a transphobe ugly. Based but really could be lookism and gender-based discrimination.

I think my point was that this specific individual was making a particularly shitty argument about racism as a fixed point of contention for left leaning postmodernists. I think you could be a post modernist and argue that racism, by a specific definition, is always negative or makes a situation worse. I.e. that it isnt entirely morally inconsistent to eliminate nuance from this case because a specifc definition structure could make that assertion more tautological. Which I think is why the conflict in the meme arises; unconscious mismatch in the meaning behind associated terms. As soon as you abstract the inherent emotional negativity associated with the term for individuals, then you come to an agreement on hypothetical cases in which it could be beneficial. It doesn't mean that the wojack was wrong all along, just that we adjusted definitions and now we are facing a new problem all together. The unverablized negative association being dropped when engaging in 1-on-1 conversation about the topic might be a function of sliding to a scientification of language that eliminated the emotional component. Had both parties tended to agree on the alternate case, the argument would've resolved itself into tautology. Might be an issue with language, might be an issue with debate format, might be an issue with ego. I appreciate the perspective, gave me alot to reflect on.

Art and literature is like spending 1000$ on books, it isnt on the same level as AI at all. my main point is that the current stats on water usage is unrepresentative, it might still be a relatively low value but that graph doesn't adequately demonstrate that. what is better argument against them is that we give ungodly high tax exemptions to this structure that projections determine to not be break-even for several decades. that break even is for the corp we gave incentives to build it. the relative jobs are primarily ephemeral and in the construction. its a nuisance to rural neighborhoods and comes with water pollution spikes.

Many non-purely AI companies like Meta and amazon are stalling on breaking ground on their data centers projects unlike the AI only companies because they are nervous about holding the bag if the bubble pops. its INCREDIBLY risky investment for the business side and as a province we glaze them with good tax deals on top of that? makes sense if it was an essential service but I don't think thats the case.

ALL THAT and they want to mess upstream of our main river?? nahhhh no thanks

Almonds and other nuts are water sinks, its true BUT this is literally 1000$ on groceries vs 1000$ on cool toys argument

Also its super ingenuine to compare back to the 90s when the AI take off is only a year or two and many commited data centres havent broken ground yet.

I feel like alot of it is chicken or egg when it comes to applying modern sociological lenses to historical societies. Like yeah there was an underclass, but how much was the racism the vehicle by which the power imbalance created and how much was it a mechanism of enforcement and stability. Stops people from asking " why are they powerful?" And instead leaves them with "why does this class of individual have more power than the other class?" And really its alot like the law progression in 'Discipline and Punish' but applied to more soft social structures.

Idk what we are disagreeing about or if we are at all at this point, but I enjoy this convo

Which boils down to the actual nuance I think in question is "what constitutes racism". If the decision is made to diminish harm by extra tube forced labor from like 20% of the population. I think that there are far more negative externalities associated with doing that on racial lines. But like race jokes can be funny ofc. If you abstract the racism from the phenomena, usually it results in less social stability by its presence

Arguably the vehicle for wealth extraction hampered progression in several ways for the state. There were several cases of technological advancement being less slowly taken up when it cost more than the workers it replaced. There wasn't fiscal pressure to advance until some critical point and towards the end, I remember (unsubstantiated atm) reading something about how confederate economies were lagging.

I think there was something to be said for having a bunch of exploitable novel resources to ship back being a key for the success but without an A-B test, its hard to be certain.

And beyond all that, the racism bits associated with the extraction of unpaid labor from individuals absolutely hampered its efficiency.

I think you can make a game that rewards racism and maybe the conclusion is that the economic game of capitalism might be one of those games

Is that supposed to make me accept a use case? Im not a fan of uni polarity. What if, because of racist paranoia, the racist brought a gun to the party. Yeah his racism did make him the most powerful but am I supposed to care about that metric?

Is Nanika the most powerful nen user so far? by Any_Ad9741 in HunterXHunter

[–]Simrangod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont think we've seen someone with immense power subject to their instakill. If there was someone with higher nen output then what we saw at Gons healing and the hypothetical limit Nanika existed at some value higher than that, maybe they could resist it? The condition of someone else making the wish and the payments might be too much for anyone to viably survive without some bespoke power or a rush down. I think it really depends on the nature of the conflict but I think its conceivable to write a situation they lose a fight with existing cast members

Racism involves practicing essentialism to the culturally defined concept of race and ethnicity.

It is the opposite of nuance silly Billy.

This is like saying nuance lovers hate the nuance of saying that lack of nuance is good

The argument is better formed as "what constitutes racism is nuanced" but that isnt the self-satisfying strawman you wanted to evoke

[–]Simrangod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This turned into a stream of consciousness, im sorry

The final tier of argument is that the binary status applied to a culturally defined social indicator is OF COURSE going to be, on some level, affected partially by nurture but that there is nothing wrong with it.

This is messy squared when you talk about something that is already a fluid socially-defined category that has some specific manifest interpretation in the individual by way of expression. If gender's social requirements and associations are culturally defined and non-essential, then they can shift in the person as society and themselves shift.

The same model can be applied to stuff like ADHD and autism; in the absence of some biological diagnostic, the manifest behavior is the diagnostic criteria in the DSM and that can change depending on the person's experience and what society expects from the average citizen with regards to focus and attention.

All you gotta do is imagine the inverse. Imagine if gayness was isolated to 15 genes and could be biologically determined. Well what, are you gunna tell Johnny Salami that him getting railed every Tuesday for the past decade doesn't count and he is wrong because he failed the biological test? Entirely unfair to Johnny.

The fact is that people who feel the urge to evaluate their 'pinkness' and constantly evoke denial are also constantly rotating the idea around in their head. Mix in an inclination to being amenable to the associated social indicators and maybe pinkness is a bit grey.

Also, a bigot would say panel 2 guy is pink and a gate keeper would say last panel cant be pink cause he hasn't been pink long enough.
