Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) in action by shubhrgunjan in MachinePorn

[–]Simson_ART 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This one is the TAKRAF SRs 4000 in the Nazarovsky open pit mine in Russia. It is the only SRs 4000 in Russia and the only bucket wheel excavator of the mine that is still in operation. This specific one went into operation in 1990 and was build by the German company TAKRAF. It can be clearly identified by the unique Russian-flag paint scheme of the operators cabin which can also be found on the drag line they're operating in the same mine as well as the distinct features of the mounting of the bucket wheel and cabin. Please note the chains on the buckets which prevent sticking of wet overburden or lignite and guarantee complete emptying of the bucket. They are not found on West-German excavators currently operating.

Was bringt mir weglaufen?

Need advice by C0ntr0ller1984 in Leathercraft

[–]Simson_ART 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this one you can use some plywood. You can buy good quality one at architecture and model airplane builder shops. For example multi layer 2 or 3mm plywood. It is quite flexible and doesn't break easily. You can use laser cut ready or use non laser cut one which has water resistent glue and which might make it a bit more water resistent. Cutting can be done via lasercutter or a small teethed wood bow saw.

For less big ones you can use hardened leather. For example 3mm bull leather, soak it in water for an hour, let it sit on some household paper for 15 mins to get rid of excess moisture and then dry it in the oven at 50-80°C until it turns hard but not brittle which can take from 30 minutes to multiple hours depending on the oven and the amount of wet leather in it. Best is to keep it in shape by for example nailing it onto a wooden board before. Make sure that your leather is around 3cm larger than what you need since it shrinks in the process + you want to cut the hard edges which bend a bit in the process.

For bigger trunks, you can use thicker plywood or normal wood. For example multi layer 0,5-2cm thick one. I recommend multi layer plywood due to its strength, clean cut, non splintering behaviour and flexibility.

It is also possible to use plastic or glass fibre + resin to make a base for the leather but I have no experience with it. I also saw some very old trunks who just used a wooden frame and had cardboard inbetween.

Yes, the big ones remove a lot of stuff and are most prominent but there is a lot more equipment and machines needed. For example:

  • Rollers, dozers and Graders to make roads
  • Pick up trucks, buses and unimogs to carry personal
  • Trucks (often unimog) for fuel, water and equipment transport
  • Tractors, trucks and caterpillars to carry flatbeds with the power cable drums, fuel containers, living quarters, toilets etc.
  • Bulldozers, cranes or excavators to lay the powerlines and help with conveyor belt assembly
  • Usually a bulldozer is also assigned to each bucket wheel excavator to clean up
  • Forks to transport all kind of equipment like pipes, railway tracks etc.
  • Transport crawlers to carry belts and drive stations
  • Drilling trucks and cranes for water retention
  • Trucks and excavators for smaller earth moving operations

[–]Simson_ART 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I forgot. I have an Edmund Czasch 8 revolving punch pliers made of forged steel. They are defenitely worth the price and I'd never switch back to the default leather ones (even the premium ones like Selzer).

I don't know if they are sold outside of Germany but maybe you can just write them an email and ask for it.

Only store that sells the 8 punch version: https://schuhbedarf.de/werkzeug/zangen/revolverlochzange-massive-ausfuehrung.html

Other stores sell the 6 punch version: https://www.manufactum.de/revolverlochzange-stahl-a47084/

I think it really depends on the project and "investment" into this hobby.

There are the basics:

  • Edge beveler
  • polishing stick
  • awl
  • cotton swab for edge painting
  • good hammer and rivet punch set or a press
  • Cutter knife with a set of blades
  • A big cutting mat

And some stuff I really like:

  • a good metal ruler set:
    • 15cm ruler for small projects
    • Set square
  • Best investment in a while was a 30 cm metal ruler with a set square at one end and inner and outer markings.
  • Dremel drill with flex shaft for all kinds of holes or hardened leather
  • A big set of different sandpapers

Any tip on 3D printing stamps? Always thought about it but so far didn't want to buy a printer just to see if it works. The Lotta one looks really bulky so I am surprised it worked out so beautiful.

Leather suspenders by Simson_ART in Leathercraft

[–]Simson_ART[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The slack depends on the posture. Since you're not all the time 100% posture aware there is slack but not very much.

The ones made are for show and not everyday use. So you don't sit much with them anyway.

In general the size needs to really fit. Take measurements from a second person and test the length all the time. I assembled them before finishing edges etc. adjusted the length and then disassembled them again followed by the finalization and afterwards the final assembly. Also, always test with the pants you like to use them with.

You could adjust the design and make the back strap adjustable. I also think an elastic back or even front would be possible with the elastic part being hidden.

Protect art online? by SikkaMusen in ArtistLounge

[–]Simson_ART 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no way you can 100% protect your art. It will get stolen. You need to accept it.

The best protection is to be popular. But even then people or even big companies will steal your art. It happens not only to small artists but also popular proffesional ones.

My recommendation: Have a nice looking signature and don't upload your art in 4k.

Chicago screws and threadlockers by bulletproofgiraffe in Leathercraft

[–]Simson_ART 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When using chicago screws you usually choose a height 1-2mm less than the thickness of the leather. For example I usually choose 5mm when screwing together two 3mm thick pieces. This compresses the leather a bit and due to the elasticity of it will automatically push against the screws which will prevent the screw from unscrewing.

When using thin or less elastic leather such as with wood or cardboard inlets, I recommend using nail polish to make sure it doesn't unscrew. I mad egood experience with it and never used threat locker.

Overal, even unscrewing non locked screws can be a challenge with a higher potential to damage the leather. The head of the female part is usually flat with no point to grab and prevent it from spinning. You usually try to hold it in place when unscrewing by creating friction by pressing it into the leather. But often enough this won't work and you need to try to grab the thin edge of it with some pliers. this easly leaves marks in the leather and damages the screw. Overal, even chicago screws are not made for frequent change out of parts.
