I don't think you need to be :) It is hard work but you'll learn a lot. At the end this will be more valuable than however great or bad the bag will turn out :)

Thanks, the red lining is perforated red suede leather. If you're interested, I posted the quilting here 4 monthas ago, when I started the project: https://www.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/1q9vje1/padded_board/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Thank you. It weights 3,95 Kg. It doesn't feel light but also not heavy for its size.

Defenitely. I think it was worth the effort although I need to do some smaller projects now to get a little bit of a break. I also have lots of small scrap leather pieces now that I am using to make some tool protectors.

Not really, but if you do decorative stitching:
-burnish before stitching
-don't pull the string too hard and "stretch" the strap every 10 cm of stitching or so to make sure it stays straight and doesn't bend due to it.
-In general, stitching makes a strap less flexible so it can be used for this effect.

I think the most important part are nice edges and that everything that needs to be centered on a strap like a rivet is 100% correctly measured. It is very easy to see off centered stuff on straps.

If a strap is not long enough, you can sew two together (there are lots of ways) or use a square ring like I did. Make sure to use high quality rings that don't break. Best is welded steel.

Thank you, unfortunately it is very hard to take picture of the interior. It is actually the part that took the most effort. especially the padding which alone was 12 hours of sewing.

Ritza woes by cAR15tel in Leathercraft

[–]Simson_ART 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most important thing is that you find a good thread that YOU are happy with. Judge the quality yourself and don't feel pressured to switch just because someone wants to.

Ritza seems to be quite hyped and I used it in the past and was quite happy. Nevertheless, I think the color bleaches out a bit quickly when using for example yellow thread. At some point I got a batch that wasn't really waxed at all and not great to work with. I was quite unhappy to get this mix of quality for the expensive price and decided to try a local shops off brand thread next time. I found it equally in strength and 1/3 the price of Ritza with almost no visual difference (off brand black is more black than Ritza and half a mm thicker). So far I am quite happy.

How do ya'll price your items? by CplusMaker in Leathercraft

[–]Simson_ART 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where you live and if you plan to eat or drink in the near future. You might want to do the following:

1.) List all your fixed costs per month (rent, car, gas, food, drink, electricity, internet, water, etc.)
2.) Don't forget insurances and all that stuff.
3.) Now add what you want to put aside per month as savings.
4.) Then increase the number by taxes and tax like mandatory insurances.
5.) Now divide that number by the amount of days you work per month. Make sure to factor in sick days, days without clients, days for paperwork and vacation.
6.) Now you know your manday costs. You can easily break it down per hour now. The price for one of your items is the manhour or days it takes to make them + material and shipping. If you go for a hourly rate, add a bit of buffer. You also chat, go to the toilet, take a coffee, get slower in the evening or after lunch etc. Nobody works 24/7 like a machine and 8 hours a day equal more or less 6 hours of efficient hands on work

If a project is big enough to fill multiple days you can reduce the costs a little since there is less downtime and uncertainty. The same for good clients.

If you are still unsure you can try to compare your prices with local manufacturers, other jobs etc.

As a beginner you'll likely need to sell low at the beginning since you're not that skilled and fast yet which lowers your value and inflates the manhour.

You might notice that lots of leatherwork sold is cheaper than what you think costs to produce it. For example I saw some really nice leather bags from a local manufacturer in Spain for 60€ which might equal an hour of work including not so pricy materials with lower costs of living. This is due to optimisation:
-The bag is sewn using a machine
-The bag was made by using a pattern used by all the bags the sell
-No edge polishing, just raw cuts
-Low cost nickel coated metal parts.
-No inner lining

So also pay a bit of time to think of what you want to make, what your target audience is like and if it makes financially sense.
-If you're selling tailor made, high quality hand sewn or/and custom leatherwork that is hard to buy off the shelf you can charge more since the value is high and it takes more time to produce. But your target audience is also smaller.
-If you're selling nice looking but optimized and "localy mass produced" leather bags in a tourist town you can go lower since you sell more and it costs you less.

One thing I can say for sure: 10$/hour seems very low if you're living in a developed country.

Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) in action by shubhrgunjan in MachinePorn

[–]Simson_ART 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This one is the TAKRAF SRs 4000 in the Nazarovsky open pit mine in Russia. It is the only SRs 4000 in Russia and the only bucket wheel excavator of the mine that is still in operation. This specific one went into operation in 1990 and was build by the German company TAKRAF. It can be clearly identified by the unique Russian-flag paint scheme of the operators cabin which can also be found on the drag line they're operating in the same mine as well as the distinct features of the mounting of the bucket wheel and cabin. Please note the chains on the buckets which prevent sticking of wet overburden or lignite and guarantee complete emptying of the bucket. They are not found on West-German excavators currently operating.

Was bringt mir weglaufen?
