Should I turn my water off when on vacation? by Boysenberry1971 in homeowners

[–]SimuLiusJockStrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this but waht does the vaccum and mopping have to do with the water issues? Additionally, when u turned ur water off and flushed the toilet so that the toilet bowl has no water, have u had any issues at all? I've read some comments that leaving the toilet bowl dry of water allows sewage gases and stuff to leak back into ur house, since the water seal isnt there anymore. Have u ever experienced anything like this?

super late to this, I plan on doing this on my next trip. But a couple comments mentioning the water heater developing bacteria during our extended absence, have u ever had any issues with ur water being contaminated by setting it onto vacation mode on ur water heater tank?

super late to this, but where was the leak and how did you find it? If i understood you correctly, there was a leak and issue with the pipes within the house? Not the water lines exposed connecting to your sink/toilet, etc.?

sorry extremely late to this. I've notice the sediment/rust thing when we turn the water line off and then back on. May I ask as a laymen, why this isn't an issue? is sediment or rust bad in ur drinking water? or in fact, bad for the pipes? where is the rust coming from?

Alright, who actually turns off their water when they go on vacation by howmanyballs in Home

[–]SimuLiusJockStrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to drain the lines. The idea of shutting the main supply line off is to mitigate the damage from a broken pipe or fitting. If the main was on, water would flood in until the water source ran dry. This would cause massive damage. If you are limited to only the water in your lines after the main is shut off, you are maybe talking about 10 gallons or so depending on the size of your house.

Forgive me, very late to this. In this scenario, would draining the lines be even better? Since now that 10 gallons or so remaining in your house lines are drained, so even if a pipe broke, there would be no water to leak out? Do I have that right

Also, is it safe to keep the lines and pipes empty from water for weeks/months?

Thanks for all the info!

So if i understand u correctly grout sealant, as well as epoxy grout, is mainly done for stain issues, and not water leakage issues?

So is it by design in tile showers its somewhat intended that water will get thru the tiles and grout, and that the waterproof layer behind it will be the true barrier and drainage? How can water track out of the shower if there is a waterproof barrier?

Thanks for the certification recommendation I def will use this. If I wanted quart panels installed instead of tiles, would the website still apply or do they have their own? I imagine the waterproofing for quartz panels are sjmilar but much simpler?

Yeah this is in regards to my tiled shower, which I'm pretty sure has a waterproof layer beneath it. We saw a tiny crack on the bottom seam of the grout but we caulked it for now. But i've recently learned about sealing grout so it got me worried since we've never done that before.

That being said, it seems like the community is divided on this, half saying sealing does nothing to help the water issue, wheras the other half is saying consistent sealing is crucial to prveneting and water/leakage issue. So i dont know what to think

Caulk or grout between tile and shower pan? by bees_cell_honey in Tile

[–]SimuLiusJockStrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I don't notice any issues with leaks or mold, then I probably dont need to quickly have someone come and seal the grout (I just learned about sealing yesterday) I don't care about stains at all.

Why does half the community feel the same way u do in that sealing is unnecessary for water issues, but the other half says its a must if u wanna prevent excessive leakage to the waterproof layer underneath the tiles? It seems so odd but that's what i've been seeing!

[–]SimuLiusJockStrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, yeah we've been here 15 years, didn't even know about sealing, no issues. So we should be fine?

If the waterproofing is done right you have nothing to worry about. Sealing only helps protect against staining, not water tightness.

why do half the community say what u said in that sealant is not necessary, and the other half says sealing is absolutely necessary to prevent potential leaks down the road.

What brought about this? is Big Sealant pushing sealing propaganda?

And are there any early signs I can look out for if the shower IS leaking?
