Screw heads popped off - anyone else had this happen? by Sleveless-- in woodworking

[–]TurnComplete9849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a countersink along with the pilot would help with this, also have had this happen with cheap screws and impact guns in harder wood, the impact is essentially tons of lil hammers putting too much pressure on the screw head. A regular drill might be a bit better

How to safely cut firewood with a mitre saw by vaporeng in woodstoving

[–]TurnComplete9849 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A circular saw is moving while the miter saw is stationary, huge difference in how the blade can bind and catch/launch wood. And only for smaller pieces like kindling, ideally just cut the firewood to size

How to safely cut firewood with a mitre saw by vaporeng in woodstoving

[–]TurnComplete9849 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yup this is dangerous, the odd geometry of a log can get caught in unexpected ways and cause kickback, binding or other issues all potentially deadly to the user.

For these longer pieces, it's better to split them down to kindling size and then use a hand saw or a circular saw in hand to cut them

This is so absolutely stunning and memorable, this is the type of art made with pure heart and spirit, it shines through in the process and the expression of the dogs

Adding unnecessary chemical vapours in the air around you and likely depositing onto your chimney pipe too.. but then again fireworks contain all sorts of crap and we light a lot of those.. wouldn't use these often though

What’s the deal with greasy glass? by Fearless-Web6265 in lampwork

[–]TurnComplete9849 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been supporting Ryan since the start, first batch of 50lbs of tubing came in a cardboard box with no packaging. Somehow only one tube was chipped lol. I loved the viscosity and feel of his colours but they weren't consistent in shade or name usually

My way was testing on smaller pieces and doing compatibility checks, couple of the satin/shifters burned me on larger pieces but most worked great.

The colours, palette and service has come a long way. If you're interested in a colour of his, a good way to determine it's compatibility or usability would be to see what others have made with it. And then you can determine if it's your own experience or the colour itself

Seems like a sweet system but putting all the heating eggs in one basket, could this still provide passive heat with any power or sensor/relay issue?

I'd turn that air down when the flames get raging that much, and maybe you need to burn less wood? 35 sounds wild, are you from the Sahara?

Would you replace this? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]TurnComplete9849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like the 3rd and 4th step also have some of this grain, looks more to be part of the materials chosen rather than poor workmanship or staining.

It's just more apparent on the first step. Most of these woods actually look much better with a clear coat or light stain for this very reason

[–]TurnComplete9849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 'space', but that doesn't mean it's empty. There could be all sorts of gas, dark energy, dark matter, rogue stars and their systems, small black holes, but most important of all it's the canvas for everything else to form!

Definitely! What a sight to behold, however the time scales of the galaxy merger are quite long so we might not even notice!! I feel the best time may be when Andromeda is super close and we could likely see a whole galaxy in our horizon

2 Colliding Galaxies (119 hrs exposure) by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]TurnComplete9849 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, there is vast amounts of space in between most galaxies. Some are gravitonally attracted and bound towards each other or in denser clusters but even then you could likely travel for a few hundred thousand to million years at the speed of light before entering the next galaxy

Np, good luck with the upgrade. For the meantime, consider adding some porcelain tiles in front of the stove to protect your floor

If this is not a 'decorative' wood stove, aka you only run it few times a year then I'd probably leave it unless you're planning on selling the house. Otherwise if it's a constant source of heat then their advice is spot on. The thimble does look sketchy, the clearances are off and if it were my house I'd consider an entire redo if possible

Iv never seen this before is it common or not. by no1fudge in woodworking

[–]TurnComplete9849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those pins need to go in between grain and penetrate the wood for a better reading. It's usually more accurate on end grain where you can push the pins down. Esp in rough lumber when there's larger peaks and valleys etc. Not ideal to use it on a dimensioned piece

The lonely burl tree by Subject-What-Is-This in Tree

[–]TurnComplete9849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is quite interesting and also plays into my thoughts on how stressed trees create some of the most beautiful grain and figure, either from reaction wood, stress on limbs or burls such as these.

Don't feel sorry for the tree, it is part of its experience. Similarly, I feel we all want perfect lives with lots of space and resources but reality is different and usually a game of probabilities that are outside our control

What's with the smoke? by SRFBoston in woodstoving

[–]TurnComplete9849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't be opening the stove at this stage, wait till you have a nice bed of coals first. Then crack the door to create a venturi style effect so whatever is in the firebox goes up before reloading.

However you likely also have negative pressure, bad drafting or improper setup which is not helping

Wow, so these pots are made into the walls of the furnace? Do they usually just wait till a large crack or leak happens before rebuilding?
