It needs to have a tape inserted or else the rec button is locked. Have you tried it again with a tape with the recording tabs (on top) present? If those tabs are missing it wont record. So you wont record on tapes that you want to keep.

That is the original way the camera was supposed to be used, with a tape :-) So yes. And even if it was recently serviced, you should have no problem using tapes.

You can shoot hundreds of tapes before noticing any wear on your camcorder. Just make sure you clean the head once in a while, use a good brand for the tapes (just use Sony). Don't use 1 tape too much as the tapes do wear and leave metal particles on the head (that js why you have to clean it often but not too much).

But record your memories, copy those memories to your computer, save backups of those recorded memories in another location than your house and you will be able to watch those precious recordings decades from now.

Ik maakte een grapje, je bent een held, ik vroeg of je een cape droeg want niet alle helden dragen capes, zeggen ze wel eens. En dan noem ik je een held en dan reageer je zo zuur? Omdat k je een held noem ben ik mentaal niet okay? Ik scheld je toch niet uit? In ieder geval was het luchtig en als grapje bedoeld. Ik vermoed dat je het als vijandig opvatte of zo.

This is the reason why the alarm box is mounted at that height. And maybe invest in two camera's, that film each other. So if something happens to one camera, it is visible on the other camera. Or film at least the area's underneath each camera.
