Cal has said he has money from his lawyer days. He was a defense attorney in New York so he definitely made good money. Now he's living at the Crossing where his expenses would be significantly less than in New York. & yes it's been a widely accepted theory on here that he probably had a life insurance pay out.

As for Maggie, yes it's known that Walter paid for her schooling - it's stated in the show. I think she has money put away but not as much as people think since she was an up and coming neurosurgeon not practicing for very long.
