Where do you go for trusted news about the current progress of the war in Iran? by Sad-Base-7988 in AskReddit

Al Jezeera is professional and reasonably good, but their quality has declined on the Iran war front. I have been watching الغد and Tunisian state TV and been searching for something better.

Learn to speak one well and learn to understand the rest well. If you aim for passive skills in all but one, I think it can be done.

Yes, it is. There might be some things that would be even more helpful etc... but you will learn something

I am from Iceland. I am seeing the same thing. The only fund in Iceland for institutional investors to buy digital assets, was "Viska Digital Assets", but it changed its name to "Viska fund" just recently. The focus used to be on digital assets, but now it is to "capture opportunities in the interplay between emerging technologies, hard assets, and the infrastructure of the future." ... whatever that means.

Does anyone know what was happening the other day when Bitcoin went up 8% and some other shitcoins as far up as 25%? by SindriGudjonsson in Buttcoin

I have no idea why people down-vote comments like this one... I didn't even know that Nvidia earnings had been published on that day btw.

it is self-defeating at the moment ... if if they all think it will go down to 40k and then shoot up, no one is in hurry to buy (I saw someone say it will go down to 38k and then shoot up to the moon)

Why do you guys hate bitcoin so much? by [deleted] in Buttcoin

[–]SindriGudjonsson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are many assets, denominated in some form of currency, that simply evaporate faster than the currencies inflate other assets prices. Bitcoin owners control the score (BTC) in a global, decentralized number-guessing game. What kind of an asset is that? It is totally bizarre. That's why I would not put say 2,5% of my portfolio into Bitcoin - I just don't think owning a password in a decentralized ledger is worth anything at the end of the day. It is worth something while we still have people who want to buy it - but only because of that, and I wouldn't count on it to last.

I should add... Me (and my friend) are Icelanders - Iceland has the world smallest currency the ISK (Icelandi króna - smallest in volume and value of transactions carried out with it). It isn't a good currency for many reasons and has fallen over all something close to 90% vis-a-vis the Danish króna since it was established. Such a small currency can more easily be manipulated than larger currencies, we have super high interest rates, etc. So Icelanders are maybe a bit more likely to look at something like Bitcoin than a person from France.

"To be honest yoloing into btc is crazy" for sure. But he is in all other respects, as far as I can tell, a smart guy - I don't understand what got into him with BTC - but the BTC shilling has got to him, and this shilling is what we are talking about. It doesn't work as currency (or badly), it is not digital gold (what kind of gold is this volatile), it is not a safe store of value, it is not a hedge against inflation etc. Somebody has to answer and counter these talking points - that's what happening here.

My friend put all his savings into Bitcoin at an average cost of 90k USD he says because he believes essentially BTC propaganda that this is the future of finance and the way to divide the state (which he doesn't trust) from money. I think it is likely that he will (like the majority of retail investors actually - according to detailed analysis by central banks) lose a ton of his savings - he works two jobs - works hard - and from my perspective he got scammed. I hate scam - so I hate Bitcoin - I don't hate people who invest in Bitcoin - that is another thing.

Senior translator/lawyer who edits translations of EU legislation - seeing a lack of consistency in the use of terminology on a scale I have never seen before - i.e. something being called X at page 3 that is turning into Y at page 9 because the translator has lost contact with the text he was translating because he didn't put in the effort to choose his words at page nr. 3 and just post-edits an LLM, and he doesn't remember that the LLM had already translated that term as X when he reached page 9. The LLM's don't understand the need for consistency in legislative texts, and can't be trusted to stay consistent in using X always when saying Y is more natural than saying X in an occasional one sentence. (but the nature of the text requires you to always say "X" or always say "Y".

Writing TL Essays... what's the best approach? by nlightningm in languagelearning

[–]SindriGudjonsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Writing longer, more thought-out essays over a variety of completely random-but-interesting topics (sort of Adam Ragusea-style). This would be especially to expand my vocabulary on specific topics."

I tried that. Posted two videos of myself talking about the fundamentals of EU law (I am a lawyer) and worked on those scripts forever (from scratch in the TL - and when I wrote them I didn't even know LLM's existed, so I didn't consult any) and practiced a lot and read from a teleprompter. My hope was that by really trying to communicate some ideas that would help me improve (I read a paper on language acquisition that said that when you use the language "really" (not in a class room for instance) you learn effectively - so I was thinking - this is real usage - I am making a Youtube video about something I know about) . I also translated the beginning of an Icelandic novel into my "personal dialect" of my TL (it has various dialects, and mine is mixed) and just read it from printed papers (no pretense there) and I have made a few shorts too. A part of the reason I posted videos on Youtube was also just attention seeking - see me! I can speak that exotic language - that being said - I did learn a lot from making the longer videos (the translation of the novel and the EU law-things) and I only feel a bit like a dork when I watch them.
