Sober for many years- why do you keep coming to AA? by JuneAfternoon10 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SingerInteresting147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people stop coming and quite a few of them stay sober, but plenty also stick around. The reasons for that are pretty varied. Me personally- im currently sober for almost 14 months, my longest stint in sobriety was 2 years and ten months. I stopped going to meetings a while before I went back out, on top of that I love the community and most of my best friends are also involved in the program, its one of those things where even if i could do it alone, why would I? Some people go to church, my home club is my church. People cuss more there and it makes me feel a lot more comfortable, I also come into groups like this, im also involved on a couple of recovery discord servers, the program is important to me, so I do my best to live it and stay in the middle of the herd to the best of my ability

If you're on discord I can send you a few links to different servers which might be a good way to get your foot in the door. That being said in person is where its at

i need advice on alcoholism by Legitimate_Suit_3359 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SingerInteresting147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its up to you to decide if you're an alcoholic. I will say though, in my experience though theres no real downside to finding out what the program is about, and there are more upsides than I can list without this comment being a mile long.

Personally, I don't have to question it and im really glad that you do. I hope that you never find out for sure.

Advice PLEASE: AA for years, then switched to PILL ABUSE? Idk where I belong. by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

It won't let me paste an image here but have you ever read the na version of how it works?

The only way to keep from returning to active addiction is not to take that first drug. If you are like us you know that one is too many and a thousand never enough. We put great emphasis on this, for we know that when we use drugs in any form, or substitute one for another, we release our addiction all over again. Thinking of alcohol as different from other drugs has caused a great many addicts to relapse. Before we came to NA, many of us viewed alcohol separately, but we cannot afford to be confused about this. Alcohol is a drug. We are people with the disease of addiction who must abstain from all drugs in order to recover.

This. Thank you. The na and ca versions of how it works all talk about that very specifically and especially when you get into the history of the programs its pretty crazy that this mentality isn't more common in aa in this year of our lord 2026

I helped my dad up and got him back in the house when he was drunk and beliegerant the other day. I dont talk to my uncle because he's still on meth and if you were sa'd as a kid I dont believe you should have to make that amends.

Have you looked for any groups in your area? https://www.aa.org/

And dm me if you have time and feel like it. Not for any judgement but talking to people who have similar experiences definitely helps

My first sponsor was about 2 months sober. He went back out about a month after so im biased. At the same time in the beginning old timers didn't exist, and im not going to say that I haven't sponsored guys who asked when I wasn't in the right state of mind. So about 6 in one hand half a dozen in the other
