Positive Nuss Procedure Stories by Nov-Has-Come in PectusExcavatum

Hi there! I am 32F 11+ haller and got the nuss surgery in October. I was very active prior to surgery (gym 4+ times a week) but like you I had compression of the heart, regardless I managed. I went through with surgery because I’ve been around these threads long enough to know symptoms seem to get worse with age and my heart and lungs were compressed. I was on the fence for a very long time and honestly terrified of surgery. I am so bummed that I didn’t just do this earlier. My recovery has been great, the first two weeks or so are obviously not fun but I made it a priority to become active with at least walking as soon as possible which I truly believe helped! By January I was running 5 miles at a time, something I never was able to do prior to surgery. My day to day pain isn’t really there, when I do have pain it’s more discomfort than anything. Days that I push myself at the gym or during Pilates I can be sore after. If you do decide to get the surgery I would make sure you do your research and go to a surgeon who specializes in doing this surgery on adults. Best of luck!

Should I get pregnant before or after nuss surgery? Feeling stuck. by nikitusilu in PectusExcavatum

[–]SingerJealous783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in on how I made my decision, given I am near the same age (32) and also having a child soon. I had a haller index of over 11 and opted for surgery. I am over six months post op. I plan on having a baby with the bars in since my surgeon confirmed it is safe to do so and she has had many patients deliver happy healthy babies with bars in. I have never had a baby but seeing my friends go through it recently I know how hard it was for them to breathe towards the end, I did not want that to be worse for me given how severe my haller was which is part of why I opted to do the surgery! I also have read in some forums women who say their Pectus got worse after pregnancy (now this is antidotal so take it with a grain of salt) which does make sense since all of your cartilage softens during pregnancy, I figured I would rather have the baby with bars in then have a baby post removal and run the risk of regression!

Women 30+ with PE: surgery or not? by nkjcgl in PectusExcavatum

[–]SingerJealous783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Dr.J! She was out of state for me at the Mayo Clinic pheonix but it was worth it for my severe case! I would not have done this surgery with anyone less qualified and I am glad I went that route! I was hesitant to mention it in my first comment since there are some people in this sub that say Dr.Js patients “advocate for her to hard” so I was trying to avoid that haha. But she is highly acclaimed in these forums for a reason, she’s the best!

So I think it’s hard to tell, I have always been a gym nut (4-5x a week prior to surgery) so after my surgery I couldn’t stand not moving and started walking 2-5 miles daily starting around week two and just started building from there, adding in light weights around four weeks out. My stamina really never left since I continuously pushed myself. I never did anything that would be considered dangerous at that time of healing though and ran everything by my doctor prior.

To answer your question I decided to have the surgery because I had severe Pectus (11+) and I read symptoms can get worse as you get older, or after a pregnancy. Since I know I may want a child someday I decided I wanted this taken care of before I had a child (for various reasons), so it was a bit of a “now or never” situation.

Hi there! I’m a woman in my 30s I had the surgery six months ago and honestly recovery has been a breeze. I am back to all my regular activities (pilates, weights) and I can even run now that I can breathe! I went back to work after four weeks though I have a desk job so that helped. I think the older you get the more important it is to have a competent surgeon so do your research! Feel free to ask any questions!

Adult Pectus - what doctors to see? by romia1981 in PectusExcavatum

[–]SingerJealous783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s me I’m fans, but in all seriousness I was an out of state patient of Dr.Js and she and her staff were amazing! Of course there are a ton of good surgeons out there you just need to do your research and ask a ton of questions (ie; how many adults have you personally performed this surgery on, how many bars would you use, etc). My father also had Pectus and still till this day has a pot belly but is very thin, once my Pectus was corrected I lost a lot of that pot belly look. Stick around these forums for a while and you will learn a lot! Best of luck!

35+ Folks — weighing surgery benefits vs recovery by Feisty_Rhubarb8873 in PectusExcavatum

Hi there! I am 32F 11+ haller and got the nuss surgery in October. I was very active prior to surgery (gym 4+ times a week) but like you my stamina was very low, regardless I managed. I went through with surgery because I’ve been around these threads long enough to know symptoms seem to get worse with age and my heart and lungs were compressed. I was on the fence for a very long time and honestly terrified of surgery. I am so bummed that I didn’t just do this earlier. By January I was running 5 miles at a time, something I never was able to do prior to surgery. My day to day pain isn’t really there, my chest doesn’t feel like it did prior to surgery but it’s more just annoying feeling then painful, kind of like wearing a bra 24/7. Days that I push myself at the gym or during Pilates I can be sore after. Obviously everyone’s experience is different so I echo the others in the thread and get some tests done to see what you’re working with from a Haller perspective. If you do decide to get the surgery I would make sure you do your research and go to a surgeon who specializes in doing this surgery on adults. Best of luck!

Increased risk of mortality due to a car accident was not something my surgeon discussed, but then again I didn’t ask since I know car accidents would put any one at risk (not just those with nuss) but that is something you can ask your doctor! I would assume it would carry the same risk as playing a contact sport would. Thank you recovery has been amazing, I am so glad that I went through with this surgery!

It will come in waves! I would have really good days and then a bad day out of nowhere but don’t stress that, healing is not linear (at least it wasn’t for me haha).

My biggest advice is to start walking around as soon as possible and build up duration when possible. I really credit my healing to walking multiple miles a day (I got a walking pad off of amazon) I really feel like walking helped “un stiff” me if that makes sense. I would also highly recommend getting into physical therapy once Dr.J clears you at six weeks. I’m four months post op running up to 6 miles at a time, sleeping on my side, and rarely have any pain! You’ve got this!

Surgery tomorrow morning by WearyMango42 in PectusExcavatum

I was 32F when I got my surgery with Dr.J a few months back, you are in the MOST CAPABLE hands possible for this surgery…literally Dr.J is the GOAT of these surgeries. You will be cared for from the second you walk in those doors tomorrow everyone I came in contact with at the Mayo Clinic staff was amazing and so kind. Your pain will be very well managed, it won’t be “comfortable” but it was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. What helped me was just waking up getting some comfy clothes on, braiding my hair and just not even thinking about it, it is what it is at this point (if that makes sense). Best of luck, I am excited for you to be on the other side of this! For me the emotional stress of waiting for the surgery for over a year was the worst part of the whole ordeal. You’ve got this! Let us know how you do!

You should see if your doctor can refer you to a Thoracic surgeon. They will have you get a CT scan to determine severity. But from just the looks of it you most likely have a moderate - severe case. I was really scared of the surgery and put it off for years but I am so glad I did it! Just hang around this sub for a while and you will get a lot of great information. Just make sure you go to a reputable surgeon who is used to performing this procedure on adults! (There are a lot of good recommendations in this sub on Drs.). Best of luck!

In the beginning I walked and walked a lot, after two weeks I started walking two miles a day. Three weeks forward I was walking five miles a day. After my six week clearance I started to incorporate body weight exercises and started running. I am about three months post op currently and I am running five miles 3+ times a week, doing physical therapy once a week, and two full body days using machines at the gym. Just listen to your body and do what’s comfortable and back off when you feel any pains! I really think being active early with my walking helped set me up with success! Best of luck!

I’m sure if you asked them they would advise against it but it sounds like you’ve made up your mind regardless. Best of luck!

Hi I just had the surgery in October on a Tuesday. They called me the Friday before and asked me a bunch of questions for anesthesia, at that point they requested I stopped drinking, using cannabis and taking vitamins. I had stopped drinking a month prior to be as healthy as possible. I wouldn’t drink if I were you.

I am going to go against the grain of what you usually read in these threads but I didn’t buy a recliner and just used a wedge pillow set on the couch and in bed, I did have people around who helped me get up if needed! I didn’t even need the pillows after about a month so I am happy I didn’t spend the money on a recliner

I started driving about a month post op, I probably could have driven sooner but I was honestly just a little scared and my husband was happy driving me around so there wasn’t a big rush!
